ahahahaha that is the campest extreme sport ever

why didn't I think of the battle of bramall lane first up, that was huge

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:22 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean tbf, and not to defend it, the fractured skull thing was no more violent in intent than a lot of other violent challenges. the battle of bramall lane was straight up crazy.

love how many genuine hardmen have played for sheffield united in the past decade - the B of BL even features Michael Brown not being sent off

no kidding. defending from a different planet - winning goal is a dry run for Jamie Pollock's belter

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I love that Cantona is in amongst all the hoofs and shanks. The bio on him that I read recently paints the early-nineties English as essentially a breed of noble savages - this match no doubt exerting a strong influence there.

Aaargh! You fucker! That match is one half of the day of my greatest footballing nightmare. Leeds benefitting from a series a bizarre gift goals and then the final indignity at Anfield completing three back-to-back defeats in less than a week.

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Only three-and-a-bit years before Liverpool reach that stage in the cycle btw.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I bet the last eighteen years barely make a dent in the anguish

Oh they certainly make up for it, that's true, but whatever comes afterwards can never change the feeling at the time. There was no way of knowing in 92 what was around the corner - instead it felt Newcastle in 96, the one big chance blown never to return.

Running the Gantelope (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

my third football match iirc

My first match at Old Trafford (many years after my first actual match) was against Sheffield United in 1991. I'd like to be able to say something about The Blades' performance to add to this thread, but I can't remember anything.

A Tom Huddlestone-sized 18-year-old centre-half, Maguire is a minor cult figure in South Yorkshire, having dumped Craig Bellamy on his backside three times while making his senior debut against Cardiff in April.

"Duffy, a United substitute, jinked into the area from the right and lashed a shot past Westwood, and all Wednesday’s good work from the previous 20 minutes was wasted. It was ripped up, thrown in a bin and set on fire after 76 minutes, when Clarke burst between two limp defenders and clipped the most delicate of finishes over Westwood."

lmao

I didn't realise Leon Clarke was at the Blades now, he has had some clubs has that lad! Surprised the massive conceded 4 at home - even in a derby. Their defence was so tight last season, but fuck 'em and great result!

I love it when L**ds choke, even though apparently Bielsa is apparently some managerial fucking genius cos he looks like jack duckworth and spies on opposition training grounds - choking is what the white shite do.

calzino, Saturday, 16 March 2019 14:42 (five years ago) link

Wilder had an interesting take on his goalscorer. “He’s done well to be the match-winner because after 25 minutes he was coming off as he was absolutely useless. But I left him in there. I still don’t think this is a defining result but we’re in the mix.”

I just hope they have treacle in their boots tomorrow night, can't be dealing with the potential of a last game relegation like in 2002. My heart can't take it. After Burnley getting into bother for putting out a weakened squad for a dead rubber game it seems we'll up against a full strength xi who have just won 4 on the bounce.

calzino, Wednesday, 3 May 2023 17:46 (eleven months ago) link

2001 wasn't it?

Toploader on the road, unite and take over (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 4 May 2023 14:05 (eleven months ago) link

oops, yeah that is correct. It was a bad year for silly bald guy... and Patrick Stewart. It was a fucking conspiracy of other managers putting out weakened sides, and ulp... we just needed a point for safety in the penultimate game and completely fucked it.
