No. Because as far as I believe in anything, it's in Judaism - and hell doesn't really exist in Judaism. (We do have a version of purgatory, though.)

Now, I don't really know that much about Jewish theology, so what is Jewish Purgatory like?

Mostly it's about feeling guilty before the sweet release of death.

Depends on who you ask, Abbott. Classically, you are cleansed by being burnt in rivers of fire. Tho Chassidic philosophy says that it's through being humiliated by your sins. So... Defending Your Life'esque.

I believe it's a dreary empty place where no-one ever posts.

Conceptually, it's just a moral Naughty Step for kids (and kid-like adults) until they learn the golden rule/categorical imperative.

In real terms, it's very clearly Other People (At Breakfast).

So far as we can tell from Scripture, the present hell, is somewhere in the heart of the earth itself. It is also called 'the pit' (Isa. 14:9, 15: Ezek. 32:18-21) and 'the abyss' (Rev. 9:2). . .
The writers certainly themselves believed hell to be real and geographically 'beneath' the earth's surface. . .
To say this is not scientific is to assume science knows much more about the earth's interior than is actually the case. The great 'pit' [hell] would only need to be about 100 miles or less in diameter to contain, with much room to spare, all the forty billion or so people who have ever lived, assuming their 'spiritual' bodies are the same size as their physical bodies.

- hell exists
- heaven exists
- god exists
- you die
- you are kind of good, kind of bad during your life
- somehow you are sentenced to 5 trillion earthyears in hell, but are allowed to spend the remainder of your time in heaven

... then as your attorney i recommend that you negotiate a settlement where you generally spend your time in heaven, and then every quadrillion years you spend a millisecond in hell. it will take (1 quadrillion x 1000 x 5 trillion years) to serve your full sentence in hell, but it's way easier to do it that way then to serve all the hell time first before going to heaven full-time.

Adhering to Jesus' commandments (Matthew 19:16-22) is easy enough, so why worry about Hell?

I thought Hell and purgatory were invented or at least more popularised in around teh 12th century to help line the coffers of teh church. They could then talk the populace into buying indulgences to reduce the time that they or loved ones/relatives spent in at least purgatory.
It also helps create the us vs them epistemology where the them are bound for hell because they don't maintain the beliefs, habits morés of those that constitute the 'us' who are bound for salvation. So helps bind people together in the co9ntemporary culture.

Also once protestanism comes in those who work hard in this life are bound for greater comfort in the next world so you need something to threaten those who don't go along with that idea with.

as for matthew 19:16-22, francis is a pretty outspoken advocate of jesus' advice in those verses...

idk a lot of Biblical scholars have claimed "Hell" is a mistranslation of "sheol" (which should really mean "grave") and that bad souls are merely extinguished rather than forced through the spatial nightmare of Hell.

Bart Ehrman writes some interesting musings across his several books on the matter.

I ain’t no hippie, but in response to Neanderthal and Kate’s annihilationism riffing upthread, if the options are between eternal unity with the divine, and none-existence, I know which one I’m taking

When I examine all the possible origins for the idea of Hell as a place of eternal punishment for eternally anguished souls who shall never escape their extreme pain and humiliation for all time, not one of them makes any sense to me in terms of morality, physics, philosophy or divinity. The only hypothesis that makes the slightest sense to me is that Hell is a falsehood that was concocted solely to frighten credulous people into better behavior by well-meaning but stupid religious leaders who thought they were doing a good deed by teaching this grotesque doctrine to those who respected them.
