Bands/artists you now respect more only because they were so rad to Nardwuar

snoop stole nardwuar's record and/or broke it! or it might have been sonic youth but i feel they both took advantage of nardwuar's sweet nature.

Snoop has stolen lots of Nardwuar's things over the years. Most importantly his Blowfly records and a Redd Foxx doll. Nardwuar got him back by telling Blowfly about it, who then recorded a hilarious dis of Snoop, which Nardwuar played for Snoop next time he was in town. Absolute classic.

Anyone saying that they "don't find him funny" or that he annoys them isn't getting the whole picture. In my opinion Nardwuar has done more for music in Canada than probably anyone else ever. In the quarter century he's been active he has interviewed thousands of bands, hosted thousands of live bands on his radio show, promoted hundreds of gigs (mostly all-ages), played hundreds of gigs with his various bands (which are brilliant fun by the way), performed with most of the significant punk rock legends of Canada, collected an irreplacable collection of video and memorabilia of Canadian rock music that is probably second to none, published books about the scene and most importantly of all, crowd surfed more than any other Canadian. This is the reason he has been able to score interviews with so many major celebrities, despite only having a tiny university radio station for his principal mouthpiece over that time - he commands respect, knows everybody and is a genuinely great guy.

ha! and it was AT the Evaporators/Thor concert at the Horeshoe that the legendary nardnads event happened.

full disclosure - it transpired whilst Zac was hoisting up a very sweaty Nardwuar from the venue floor (rather than the stage) because the Nard had suddenly decided to crowd surf like it was still the 90s. and then later on, Thor was rather "overly friendly" to my sister and i on his way towards the bar. kind of a great night.

I don't really know much about Blur's music or reputation as people. But is their drummer always this aggro?

OH RICHEY, WHY. (PaulTMA), Monday, 28 March 2011 12:39 (thirteen years ago) link

He just issued an apology/explanation for that. What a knob.

everything, Friday, 1 April 2011 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

So he was on the coke as recently as 2003? I'm pretty positive he gave interviews around the time of The Great Escape where he talked being sober after something like 2 years of being a recovering alcoholic and was therefore the only teetotal member of the band. I guess this didn't include taking MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF COCAINE then.

OH RICHEY, WHY. (PaulTMA), Friday, 1 April 2011 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Exactly what I was thinking. Anyway "I was on cocaine" is a pathetic explanation for bad behaviour. It justifies nothing to anyone except for yourself. What he needs to say is that he has a long history of behaving like a douchebag (up against some extremely strong competition, what with being in Blur and all) and this was just one incident that happened to be videotaped.

everything, Friday, 1 April 2011 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

feel so bad for nardwuar in that clip but he keeps on going like a pro

original bgm, Friday, 1 April 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

No need to feel sorry for him. That kind of response is Nardwuar's drug of choice. I'm pretty sure he was stoked about getting a compelling interview. The guy is punk rock through and through and a lot more hardcore than he lets on when interviewing celebs.

watched the questlove one today. 40 minutes long! could listen to him talk about records all day. such a smarty and always interesting. i never listen to the roots but i got love for him.

scott seward, Friday, 1 April 2011 21:16 (thirteen years ago) link

when the dudes he's interviewing get annoyed at him i find myself taking the same route. the feigned personality is such a gimmick compared to the potential he has for really enlightening viewers about a band's/artist/whatever's history and interests. it seems he puts it up as a sort of barrier whenever his interviewee begins to grow agitated b/c of it, and drops all of it save for the accent when they play along.

kelpolaris, Saturday, 2 April 2011 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i wonder if he thinks by employing the nardwuar personality that he reduces his risk of becoming overly creepy/paparrazi-like?

kelpolaris, Saturday, 2 April 2011 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i watched a lot of these today. i like them. hilary duff one is really good! Double Duff! hahaha! like that n.e.r.d. one too.

interviews in general are usually so horrible. i've got nothing bad to say about him. so he's in character. so is every other pro interviewer. other people are just in really boring character. i love that all it takes is the hat and glasses. he looks totally normal without those 2 thing.

This has to be so much more than Nardwuar ever thought he could get out of an interview. It seems Andrew WK gets the premise more than he does.

Can we compile the best/worst interviewees on Nardwuar? Comparing the chill ones to the pricks. There's so many of them I don't know where to start, the best ones are mostly metal/hip hop artists. They come off as the most smart and humorous of all I've seen so far. Artists being pricks to Nardwuar tell a lot about their real personalities, I guess that's one of my favorite things about him. He acts like a barometer that let's you know how charismatic an artist really is in person and how well they cope with something out of the ordinary.
