;_;

"What You Know" was totally my #2 though.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 02:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Im so f'in sick of that Gnarls Barkley song.

Search: musically
Destroy: the voters

I mean, seriously - "Crazy"? I realize that in a poll like this you're torn between rating a song based on its initial impact and rating it based on a few months of hindsight, but I tend towards the "hindsight" camp myself and in hindsight "Crazy" is really annoying and thin. Actually, wait. I thought that in the first place. I thought it was overplayed the second time I heard it at the disco, but even on the twentieth such occasion there were throngs of people gleefully exclaiming when they heard that familiar repetitious whomp. I don't really know what else to compare the thing to except some malodorous cross between "Flat Beat" and "Connected" except with a guy doing some sort of keening-mewling atonal crap on top. GUYS. THIS SONG IS ANNOYING. AUGH.

the chorus goes absolutely nowhere.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:45 (sixteen years ago) link

"Crazy" is great, however much people may be sick of it.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

47. Lil Wayne feat. Robin Thicke - Shooter
(40 points, 2 votes, 2 number ones)

I think it is significant that "Shooter" wins in the enthusiasm/passion stakes - average points = perfect 20. And it placed pretty low because not many people had heard of it.

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, shocking that "Maneater," "SOS," "Pull Shapes" and Escort's "Starlight" are missing from here.

Disappointing that other than the Ahmad Fathi wtf, there are no non-English language tracks. Calle 13 people! You all should go and seek out Snook.

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, The Reverend: I heart you for voting for "Get Me Bodied"

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:38 (sixteen years ago) link

watching the video for "Shooter" - I remember seeing this on MTVU, I'd forgotten about it. The little tinkly electric piano part is great, but I'm not sure I'd rank this song.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"crazy" is insipid.

lfam, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder if my first place vote would have gotten "Mac 10 Handle" into the top-50

milo z, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:12 (sixteen years ago) link

but i didn't vote

lfam, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link

"Shooter" is different, I guess.

Could Wayne not get the real JT to guest on his track or something?

milo z, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i heard crazy way after all the 'omg crazy' nonsense so i'll give it the benefit of the doubt and consider it 'tainted'. i don't think it would have cracked my top 25 in any case.

tremendoid, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Milo - Robin Thicke did the original "O Shooter," of which the Wayne track is a reworking.

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 08:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Calle 13 probably suffered from a certain amount of vote-splitting.

x-post: note lack of shit indie

Ain't that special. . .

I don't know why I voted for that Christine Aguilera song--I guess it was for the beats. Otherwise, my picks are a list of strategic, absurdist-strategic, and from the heart voting. I probably don't think "Don't Save Me" was the best song from last year, but I wanted it to make a respectable showing, and I do think it's very good.

1. Marit Larsen - Don't Save Me
2. Ahmad Fathi - La Tisafir
3. Andy Montanez/Daddy Yankee - Se Le Ve*
4. Michael Stuart - Mayor Que Yo*
5. Michael Stuart - Yo No Soy Tu Marido*
6. Monchy & Alexandra - No Es Una Novela*
7. Luny Tunes - Noche Entierro*
8. Calle 13 - La Jirafa
9. Calle 13 - !Atrévete Té, Té!
10. El Gran Combo - Arroz con Habichuela*
11. Andy Montanez/Voltio - En Mi Puertorro*
12. Son de Cali – Llorando
13. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
14. Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push
15. Alexis & Fido – Tiburon*
16. Ayelet Rose Gottlieb – Tapuach*
17. Final Fantasy - This Lamb Sells Condos
18. Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man

20. Amy Winehouse - Rehab

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:35 (sixteen years ago) link

That was for things I was willing to try to write a blurb for. (In the unlikely event. . .)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not one who loves tons of songs each year, so my list is only the ones I wouldn't want to be without. Lot's of other stuff I enjoy hearing on mixes or on the radio, but wouldn't particularly miss if they weren't around.

1.Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push
2.Turbulence - Notorious*
3.Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
4.Marit Larsen - Don't Save Me
5.Muse - Knights of Cydonia
6.Coup - We Are The Ones

* I know it was out earlier in Jamaica (2005?), but became widely available last year which was when I was able to get a copy.

Beyonce's "Ring The Alarm" was my pick for worst single. If it had been a remake of the Tenor Saw song instead of poorly done histrionics things might have been different.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't imagine not being able to fill the songs list. There have to be another 20-50 songs I'm really pissed I couldn't include.

I hated "Ring the Alarm" at first too. You have to listen to it really LOUD for it to make sense.

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Can I mention how much I despise "Young Folks"? Yeah, the drumbeat is good, but it's a pure garden variety funk beat. Then I get to thinking that the whistle hook is the most anoying thing ever. But then come the most snively indie boy vocals in the world. Is the girl going to be better? No. She's just as bad, if not worse. And the video confirms my suspicions that everyone involved has Downs Sydrome.

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:02 (sixteen years ago) link

the reverend dollarstore on 'young folks'; i don't think i voted for a worst song but if i had it would have been that twee retarded piece of shit. and i haven't even seen the video, i'll file that under DO NOT WANT.

lex pretend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I should play that "Ring The Alarm" really loud (the Tenor Saw song, no problem)? It find it rather grating at low volumes, and can't really picture it getting better louder.

I could have filled my list with other songs I liked, but those were just the ones I truly loved. I find myself obsessing over a smaller selection of things after sampling the great hordes of stuff, and it is that small selection I want to recognize for lists like this.

I also like to impose silly rules; in this case, no singles off albums if I really like more than one track, thus no T.I. or Nelly Furtado.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm agreeing with Lex and The Reverend here - "Young Folks" doesn't coalesce into anything I want to hear. "Amsterdam", on the other hand, totally works for me, though I can't explain why.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

the reverend dollarstore on 'young folks'; i don't think i voted for a worst song but if i had it would have been that twee retarded piece of shit.

groovemaaan, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Plz explain your 'dollarstore' usage, because you're totally confusing me...I mean, I get the nature of it, but I don't get why you used it where you used it. THX!

Tape Store, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

And BTW, I hate the TVOTR album except for those two songs, which both are awesome...In general, TVOTR is better in theory than in practice; those ("I Was a Lover" and "Wolf Like Me") are the only two songs where they really live up to my expectations...off that album, at least

Tape Store, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i'd have thought that 'ring the alarm' loud would have just emphasised its screechiness! i loved it on first listen but i suspect that if anything helps one appreciate it, it's the mental video.

"dollarstore" = variant of on the money, right? i dunno.

lex pretend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, yeah, the video, too.
