I'm...wondering...was there a problem with using a normal browser via the iphone or similar device? I never had a smart phone before now but this droid thing seems to do okay with ILX although it doesn't remember where I left off a long thread and return me to my exit point. But other than that, it seems v functional.

IIRC this whole thing came about because stet was messing around with Apple application development and made an ILX reader as a test application, which he then converted into an iPhone app
― bang (HI DERE), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link
do you use bookmarks Laurel? Zing handles bookmarks much much better than the phone's browser ime - on the iphone anyway.
― Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link
really like Zing btw stet - cheers for making it. Would second the comment about only being able to load up clusterfuck threads in groups of 100s. don't bother if it's too difficult for you tho - i'd much prefer access to the search functions if poss.
― Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link
Don't use bookmarks, no. Never understood what they were for, basically. I am not tech-y like at all.

It's so that when yr fave threads get updated, you can 1)see that there are new posts (useful for when you haven't been ilx-ing for a while and a thread you're interested in has a new post or posts but is sunk beneath many other threads), and 2) takes you directly to where you left off in reading the thread

― markers, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link
Basically, just go to your fave thread and bookmark the most recent message. Next time someone posts to that thread you'll see how it works. "try it you'll like it", etc
― Socrates, you asshole (Z S), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:41 (fourteen years ago) link
I didn't use bookmarks until Zing, but now I use them all the time. Dark theme rules.

You can see the entire width of the page with Zing without having to use gestures.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link
That's actually quite a hard one, Grady. Will have a think.
I thought it might be. Again, it's not that big a deal, just the only design flaw in an otherwise great app imo

id also like to see an option where you can choose to have images load in the main thread screen. I guess it would be slow on 3G but might be okay on wifi?

On review, my phone doesn't handle SNA, it only shows one board at a time, I think, even though my log-in preferences are for lots of boards to show up.
Will Zing work on a droid?
― I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link
images on the main thread screen was just unusably slow when I tried it out. It might be OK on an iPhone 4, but I'll look into it.
Laurel: No droid action, sorry. I think Ken C was looking into an Android version tho
― stet, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link
zing is great –– and i'd echo sunny successor's rq for a 'photo on' option.

1.9's approved and should go live tonight! Changes:
NEWMultitasking is enabled on supported devices, including remembering your place and faster startup. (iOS 4+)You can now start new threads. You can undo the button actions in compose windows, including the trashcan.
FIXESA crash that could happen when deleting a bookmark has been fixed. Now warn when trying to set bookmarks with old-style bookmarking set in settings.Thread timestamps now update correctlyBetter handling of a changed password.Properly uses the serif font in the message detail view (thx Ben)Fixes an issues where reordered boards weren't saved. (thx Ben(Thanks also to sunny for lots of testing)
Also: I know Zing Lite's pretty neglected -- made some mistakes that mean updating it is harder than it should be -- so I've put Zing Touch on sale for $2 until I can sort it out. If you use it a lot it's probably worth it -- there's a ton of bug fixes and features in ZT.

You can now start new threads.
:-) And thanks for it all!
(Does that make the search function the next major thing on your plate?)

Just sprung for the full version. I'm sure I won't regret it. Apart from the Twitter app, Zing Lite was easily my most used app.
Keep up the good work!

I find myself instinctively pulling down to refresh, ala twitter or Facebook. Can you steal that functionality?
― Jeff, Saturday, 20 November 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link
Ha, I was thinking of the same thing the other day!
The other thing that crossed my mind -- the 'reconnect' feature is wonderful, but I notice it doesn't automatically refresh the page either. Might that be a possibility?
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 November 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link
That pull-down thing is now a public library of some sort, innit?
― Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 20 November 2010 21:00 (thirteen years ago) link
It would be pull-up for Zing, wouldn't it? Will look at that. Have also done away with the reconnecting thing in next version, have better solution.

These are the things I would love to see (but am not demanding):
- control over font size- ability to re-add hidden borads
― Interests: eating my cookie (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link
I'd love to adjust font sizes as well. Not a fan of shaking to do anything because I end up doing this by accident way too often.

SNA page is where the fonts are badliest in their bigness. Not a fan of the whole tram seeing 49 reasons she thinks he's gay (although I could always just use the normal ilx site so)

Wondering if you have any inclination to make an iPad-sized version of this? Probably an unnecessary pain but I would definitely download it.

My requests:
1. Search2. A way to see my bookmarks even if they haven't updated.3. (and this is way pie-in-the-sky) Server-side image resizer that would allow viewing of picture threads on iPhone.

2 would be great but I'm conscious of the fact that it's not meant to do everything ilx does.

Yes. My standard disclaimer that applies to all requests is "...but I love it the way it is, thanks!"
