Surely hearing a roommate have sex because you're stuck in a college dorm room in a bunk bed is different than watching 2 people...

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

(Referring to this "Been in the same room while someone was having sex -- $25")

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Those meth ads are particularly effective because they're in the same place as the AA ads in New City, Onion, etc.

Oh, Sarahpaws. Were you stuck on the top bunk or the bottom?

Eazy, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I am working on a paper with dozens of Chinese and Japanese authors, and one of them is named "Y. I. Ohta" and it's cracking me up.

I think about this sometimes- race in the personals. At what point is it a problem? Craigslist is not like Match.com where you have boxes to check which races you're interested in, so you have to write it out. Does this make Match.com (and every other dating site) racist?

Jesse, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

And does "Vandalized something -- $20" include writing on a bathroom stall in elementary school? What if it was a diatribe about why people shouldn't use curse words because Jesus wouldn't approve and about how life is beautiful?

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I assumed that "been in the same room" one meant exactly what you described: being stuck in a dorm room. I don't think they necessarily mean "watched," but I guess that would count, too.

jaymc, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

EZ, All I will say is that DH had two roommates in college one year and all three of them slept in the same room (and both other roommies had girlfriends too).

This is actually really really big question that should maybe get its own thread, mainly because I don't want to talk about it or be involved in any discussion of it.

n/a, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha ha, John, I was thinking about it the other way around.

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh shit, if vandalized means run-of-the-mill bathroom-stall graffiti, then I need to add that to my tab, too.

jaymc, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

(I had this thing in college where I'd leave nonsense poetry in bathroom stalls and then come back to see how people responded.)

Nick, when has a discussion about race ever been a big deal?

Jesse, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I wrote something on the wall of the Green Mill men's bathroom once, something funny-ish, but I have no idea what it was (drunk).

Eazy, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

The graffiti in the women's bathroom at the Bottle is pretty funny, all melodramatic stuff about dating boys in bands, breaking up, and then seeing them on stage again, and how small the Chicago scene is.

From that Craigslist racism essay:

But do they speak English?: “Ideally you are sexy and fun and speak good English.” [It’s too bad this guy can’t. If he did, he’s know that his sentence was technically not written in proper English. A run-on sentence + lack of adverb use does not a good sentence make!]

I don't see what's wrong with that sentence at all. It's not a run-on. And "speak English well" is maybe more proper-sounding than "speak good English," but I think the latter is an accepted colloquialism. I'd maybe put a comma after "ideally," but that's quibbling.

jaymc, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Does she think it's a run-on because it uses "and" twice? I don't know how you would write it any other way: the first one connects "sexy" and "fun," while the second connects "are" and "speak." It's not a serial list. (Not that that would make it a run-on, either. There's only one subject here.)

I'm sorry.

I wish I weren't here.

On this earth.

Jesse, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the essay writer was being pedantic so they could make an easy snarky attack.

dan m, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I know, Nick, but it sort of falls flat when you're just plain wrong.

jaymc, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Compared to the other stuff I read on the Internet (political blogs), things aren't very pedantic at all around here. Most other forums I read are like Bill O'Reilly transcripts in terms of conversation.

Jordan - wasn't mine, alas.

It's official, inarguable: office hangover sucks worst.

Jesse, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I've said it before, and I just said it again, and I'll say it again later.

Jesse, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

hey peepz, I'm working at a better job now where I can actually use the internet. I'm just checking in to see if I'm the only one going to see ESG tonight. This is going to be the JAM! Someone else must be going, right?

stingy, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I agree with you, John. I thought saying "pedantic" and "easy" and "snarky" made it clear that I though this person was taking cheap shots. I mean, it's not great English but it's the Internet, so who cares. Also, even if the sentence is poorly constructed, he said he's looking for someone who can "speak good English," not necessarily write proper English, so even the thought behind the criticism is valid if we're going to be all pedantic about everything.

n/a, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Not me! I will be at BondeDo Role.

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

fair enough, that should be good. they were supposed to play earlier in the year in chapel hill but had to cancel.

Wow, here are two people I've been told I resemble in the same photo (Morrow's looking less scruffy than he used to):

Wow, I wondered if Joel Fleischman was dead. He looks less dorky than he did in the 90s, but don't we all.

Who's the other guy? He was in the Ice Storm, right?

Jordan, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I guess they're both on some TV show called Numb3rs?

Rob Morrow looks more like me here:

you think bonde do role will sell out?

river wolf, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

IMdB tells me he was in The Ice Storm, but I don't remember him. I was going to say, though, if he wasn't in The Ice Storm, he should've been.

He also played Neal's older brother in Freaks and Geeks and Natasha Lyonne's brother in Slums of Beverly Hills.

jaymc, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

xp David Krumholtz is his name.

So, interesting that David Chase produced both Northern Exposure and The Sopranos, two shows with entire casts that may never be seen again.
