I am working on a paper with dozens of Chinese and Japanese authors, and one of them is named "Y. I. Ohta" and it's cracking me up.

I think about this sometimes- race in the personals. At what point is it a problem? Craigslist is not like Match.com where you have boxes to check which races you're interested in, so you have to write it out. Does this make Match.com (and every other dating site) racist?

And does "Vandalized something -- $20" include writing on a bathroom stall in elementary school? What if it was a diatribe about why people shouldn't use curse words because Jesus wouldn't approve and about how life is beautiful?

I assumed that "been in the same room" one meant exactly what you described: being stuck in a dorm room. I don't think they necessarily mean "watched," but I guess that would count, too.

EZ, All I will say is that DH had two roommates in college one year and all three of them slept in the same room (and both other roommies had girlfriends too).

I wrote something on the wall of the Green Mill men's bathroom once, something funny-ish, but I have no idea what it was (drunk).

The graffiti in the women's bathroom at the Bottle is pretty funny, all melodramatic stuff about dating boys in bands, breaking up, and then seeing them on stage again, and how small the Chicago scene is.

I don't see what's wrong with that sentence at all. It's not a run-on. And "speak English well" is maybe more proper-sounding than "speak good English," but I think the latter is an accepted colloquialism. I'd maybe put a comma after "ideally," but that's quibbling.

Does she think it's a run-on because it uses "and" twice? I don't know how you would write it any other way: the first one connects "sexy" and "fun," while the second connects "are" and "speak." It's not a serial list. (Not that that would make it a run-on, either. There's only one subject here.)

Compared to the other stuff I read on the Internet (political blogs), things aren't very pedantic at all around here. Most other forums I read are like Bill O'Reilly transcripts in terms of conversation.

Oh, I agree with you, John. I thought saying "pedantic" and "easy" and "snarky" made it clear that I though this person was taking cheap shots. I mean, it's not great English but it's the Internet, so who cares. Also, even if the sentence is poorly constructed, he said he's looking for someone who can "speak good English," not necessarily write proper English, so even the thought behind the criticism is valid if we're going to be all pedantic about everything.
