I dunno, Jackson is pretty good. If they do it now he can start learning the playbook and be in better shape when his suspension ends.

This is the route Favre finally took to camp this season. </dad>

GB @ CHI : Against all good judgement, I'm picking Bears to go 3-0.

Dude no way. The Bears line can't protect Cutler at all, and Clay Matthews is a steroid monster right now.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Weirdness, thy name is Monday Night Football.

Close games are usually closer, upsets happen more often than usual, great players play poorly, poor players play greatly. So, while Green Bay should absolutely win this, I'm going with Chicago anyway. (I'm not putting a lot of confidence points on it, though.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:56 (thirteen years ago) link

one amazing thing about the bears so far is that Cutler has been so resolute and tough in the face of constant pressure. He's a SOB, but a tough SOB.

he's made some incredible passes this year

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Couple of things I have noticed...

Houston Texans have given up over 800 yards in passing in the first two weeks.

Talking heads are talking like the Bears don't have any 'real' receivers. Now going into last year, I could see this point, as they didn't have much experience. They put up some yards up last year, even if the interceptions killed them. Their wide outs are just flat out fast, even some of the backups like Bennett. I'd like to see them have a hands/possession receiver, but they pretty much have that with Forte and he has the ability to make a move after the catch. Olsen isn't bad either. That offensive line...err, I hope they can keep Cutler from getting killed.

Bears defense put some flat out knocks on the Cowboys last week.

earlnash, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Have you guys noticed that on the team pages for Yahoo (those of you who play in the fantasy leagues, anyway) they list salaries? I was just peeping the Raiders page and saw this: punter Shane Lechler makes $6,401,560 in 2010, while Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski and Michael Bush don't even make that much combined. Punting is lucrative!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 10:15 (thirteen years ago) link

To be fair, Lechler may be most reliable player on team. "May"

"We had multiple deals in place," said Neil Schwartz, Vincent Jackson's agent. "It is our understanding from (other general managers) that the Chargers were unreasonable. More than one general manager referred to A.J. as the 'Lord of No Rings.'"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 September 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Sources say Jackson’s agents will attempt to get back at Smith by making sure their receiver, once he ends up with a new team next spring (or later, depending upon the uncertain labor landscape), has an inordinately low base salary for 2011 – which would likely reduce the compensatory pick the Chargers would receive for losing Jackson from a potential third-rounder to a sixth- or seventh-round selection.

Haha that is genius.

Sorry guys, I have to rant and the AFL board is tumbleweeds. Whatever issues the NFL has with o/t rules in Superbowls, it's all gravy compared to Australian Rules Football: AFL Grand Final was played today (well tomorrow, whatver, timezones, ow)...both teams tied the score at the end of regulation. Aaaaand that's all.
Official league rules say no extra time in the Grand Final, so...no extra time. Both teams come back next week to play it all over again. Stupid bloody archaic rulebook, probably still has penalties for untrimmed mustaches and not folding your breeches correctly before a game. GAH!!!!!! St Kilda haven't won a premiership since 1966; last year they were beaten in the grand final in a heartbreaker; this year they tie. If they don't win the do-over game, I'm pretty sure they'll chomp down on cyanide pills.

The end.

it's always worth keeping an eye on someone who draws "hey look, he's actually playing hard!!" articles in the third game of the season

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

You guys would know more than I would since I only watched him every once in awhile on the Panthers, but it would not surprise me if one of the reasons he slacked a bit was because he was on a shitty team, a la Randy Moss. Before the Panthers fell apart he seemed like a total badass. Now he's playing on what seems like a good team, playing along with some guys he has to be accountable to and a coach maybe he respects a little more ... also, even his worst seasons in Carolina he was a disruptive force, and the Bears didn't really have that. If he draws double teams it will make it easier for Urlacher and Briggs to roam. I think he makes that defense a lot better.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the panthers have never been worse than 7-9 since he's been there, and had three seasons of 11+ wins. you might be right, but this is not a moss on the raiders thing.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

They were pretty dang bad last year, 7-9 notwithstanding.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, and they were pretty damn good the year before--peppers' reputation did not suddenly appear last year.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Peppers was also kind of banged up for a couple of years in Carolina, which was part of the reason his production slid down a bit.
