I tried what you said to do, sunny, and the options do not show up for me. I always figured that polls were not part of Zing Touch.

dumplings (Jesse), Monday, 20 September 2010 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

oh I never see x poll options or anything. I am running 1.0 Lite btw

oh no i have further contributed to the depopulation of ilm!!

looking upthread the same update that lets ppl take boards out of SNA (not just off the opening screen) is the update that allows ppl to view and vote in polls so if you can do one you should be able to do t'other? maybe lite never got that update?

camphor jars (c sharp major), Monday, 20 September 2010 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

I thought I bought the full version....maybe not. I do not know.

DUMPLINGS!

dumplings (Jesse), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

1.0 didn't have poll support -- you need to update! I think both lite and full should have polls now; they definitely do in the next release.

Is this the thread where we talk about the Bai Ling eats fetuses classic DUMPLINGS!?

def. dont have polls in lite and updating doesn't add them

jeff, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

hey stet zing is awesome

it crashes for me on occasion but no more than any other great app. obv, being able to start threads and use a search function would be great, but jumping over to safari for that isn't too hard.

my number one request/ complaint however is this:

-if you have a thread bookmarked on a message that is more than 100 posts from the end of the thread, zing will only take you to the last 100 posts, and not to your bookmarked post.

obv not a problem that comes up too much, but it would be nice to have fixed in an update.

New feature: improved clusterfuck thread management

Socrates, you asshole (Z S), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

Not really complaining, but one minor glitch: occasionally when I touch a thread, it just instantly closes down and I'm back on the iPhone home screen. As crashes go, it's not that inconvenient or frustrating (like a freeze-up or time-out would be).

dumplings (Jesse), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

i get that a lot

jeff, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

That's actually quite a hard one, Grady. Will have a think.

Crashes: If you sync with iTunes, you'll find crash logs in these folders:
Mac OS X : ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows Vista: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>

Look in that folder, find the ones with "Zing" in the title, and fire 'em off to stet @ ilxor and i'll take a look. Lots of them likely to be fixed in the latest update, though.

stet, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

I'm...wondering...was there a problem with using a normal browser via the iphone or similar device? I never had a smart phone before now but this droid thing seems to do okay with ILX although it doesn't remember where I left off a long thread and return me to my exit point. But other than that, it seems v functional.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

IIRC this whole thing came about because stet was messing around with Apple application development and made an ILX reader as a test application, which he then converted into an iPhone app

bang (HI DERE), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

do you use bookmarks Laurel? Zing handles bookmarks much much better than the phone's browser ime - on the iphone anyway.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

really like Zing btw stet - cheers for making it. Would second the comment about only being able to load up clusterfuck threads in groups of 100s. don't bother if it's too difficult for you tho - i'd much prefer access to the search functions if poss.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

Don't use bookmarks, no. Never understood what they were for, basically. I am not tech-y like at all.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

It's so that when yr fave threads get updated, you can 1)see that there are new posts (useful for when you haven't been ilx-ing for a while and a thread you're interested in has a new post or posts but is sunk beneath many other threads), and 2) takes you directly to where you left off in reading the thread

markers, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

Basically, just go to your fave thread and bookmark the most recent message. Next time someone posts to that thread you'll see how it works. "try it you'll like it", etc

Socrates, you asshole (Z S), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 21:41 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't use bookmarks until Zing, but now I use them all the time. Dark theme rules.

You can see the entire width of the page with Zing without having to use gestures.

I thought it might be. Again, it's not that big a deal, just the only design flaw in an otherwise great app imo

id also like to see an option where you can choose to have images load in the main thread screen. I guess it would be slow on 3G but might be okay on wifi?

I saw him in convulsive throws I said "I'll have one of those" (sunny successor), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

On review, my phone doesn't handle SNA, it only shows one board at a time, I think, even though my log-in preferences are for lots of boards to show up.

Will Zing work on a droid?

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

images on the main thread screen was just unusably slow when I tried it out. It might be OK on an iPhone 4, but I'll look into it.

Laurel: No droid action, sorry. I think Ken C was looking into an Android version tho

stet, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

zing is great –– and i'd echo sunny successor's rq for a 'photo on' option.

one month passes...

1.9's approved and should go live tonight! Changes:

NEW
Multitasking is enabled on supported devices, including remembering your place and faster startup. (iOS 4+)
You can now start new threads.
You can undo the button actions in compose windows, including the trashcan.

FIXES
A crash that could happen when deleting a bookmark has been fixed.
Now warn when trying to set bookmarks with old-style bookmarking set in settings.
Thread timestamps now update correctly
Better handling of a changed password.
Properly uses the serif font in the message detail view (thx Ben)
Fixes an issues where reordered boards weren't saved. (thx Ben
(Thanks also to sunny for lots of testing)

Also: I know Zing Lite's pretty neglected -- made some mistakes that mean updating it is harder than it should be -- so I've put Zing Touch on sale for $2 until I can sort it out. If you use it a lot it's probably worth it -- there's a ton of bug fixes and features in ZT.

stet, Sunday, 14 November 2010 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

You can now start new threads.

:-) And thanks for it all!

(Does that make the search function the next major thing on your plate?)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 14 November 2010 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

Yup, working on it right now!

Just sprung for the full version. I'm sure I won't regret it. Apart from the Twitter app, Zing Lite was easily my most used app.

Keep up the good work!

I find myself instinctively pulling down to refresh, ala twitter or Facebook. Can you steal that functionality?

Jeff, Saturday, 20 November 2010 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, I was thinking of the same thing the other day!

The other thing that crossed my mind -- the 'reconnect' feature is wonderful, but I notice it doesn't automatically refresh the page either. Might that be a possibility?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 November 2010 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

That pull-down thing is now a public library of some sort, innit?

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 20 November 2010 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

It would be pull-up for Zing, wouldn't it? Will look at that. Have also done away with the reconnecting thing in next version, have better solution.

stet, Saturday, 20 November 2010 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

Looks like there are a few open implementations: http://blog.leahculver.com/2010/07/iphone-pull-to-refresh.html
