there's probably an argument to be made for outkast but actually their 00's output kinda sucked

I know you didn't just say that about Stankonia.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Sunday, 19 September 2010 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

stankonia is brilliant but that's turn of the decade and then..........

did any other rapper manage the transition from the 90s to the 00's so well? probably helps that, like you said upthread a bit, he has always positioned himself as this veteran reflecting on street life. in some respects he's been making "old map rap" his entire career. xxp

not sure if artistically but jay didn't really become a superstar until the 00s....

also, e-40 has done good, quik, sean price, prodigy (to an extent)

haha if you take out illmatic it's close but yeah dude's been pretty consistent

kellspolaris (k3vin k.), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

90s: One dope album, three unlistenable shit albums
00s: Five pretty solid albums in a row

the perry bubble fell-off-ship (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

see i love it was written a TON (my challops is i like it almost as much as illmatic)

rawkan the chief (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i personally can't stand a lot of nas' 00's output in particular that pseudo-historical/intellectual bullshit thing he does

i feed these skreets (tpp), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yea but he mostly does that on his s/t and Stillmatic, and even then on the latter it doesn't comprise the entire album. Besides, even if he's misguided on many things, I admire him for at least reaching beyond the standard base rap topics.

(I still LOL at him for thinking William Cooper was some kind of martyr and not just a complete lunatic).

turn in yer badge (San Te), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I haven't heard Nastradamus or I am, but I like It was Written a lot. Still, though, God's Son and Stillmatic are top notch for me, and I really like all of his 00's output, to varying degrees.

so I'd say it was a valid point.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

his verse on 'in between us' is totally classic actually

i feed these skreets (tpp), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

iww is better than any album he's released since

flaccid house (The Reverend), Monday, 20 September 2010 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

It is underrated, that's for sure. I mean it did get critical recognition but gets hated on in way too many circles.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Monday, 20 September 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

arguing about which of nas' albums post-illmatic is the least shit is a rap nerd argument that's gonna be going on when all of us are dead, isn't it?

J0rdan S., Monday, 20 September 2010 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link

this thread is bonkers.

agree w/100%:
I think Scarface's voice is at its most powerful on Diary

basically listened to the untouchable all weekend. the subtle production on it really reminds me of the angle chronic 2001 works. it's so smooth and laid back that it's easy to gloss over the details at first. but there's a lot of depth there and I feel like I hear new things each time I spin it. and it just sounds fucking classy as hell.

Last of a Dying Breed is sooooooooooo slept on.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 10 August 2013 19:36 (ten years ago) link

yeah totally. obviously there's a high baseline of quality for pretty much all of his albums, but i think conventional wisdom about their relative quality could really stand to be reevaluated. The World Is Yours and The Untouchable are probably my favorites, Last of a Dying Breed totally doesn't deserve to be forgotten like it has, and The Diary kinda leaves me cold.

About the Book

From Geto Boys legend and renowned storyteller Scarface, comes a passionate memoir about how hip-hop changed the life of a kid from the south side of Houston, and how he rose to the top-and ushered in a new generation of rap dominance.
Scarface is the celebrated rapper whose hits include "On My Block," "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" and "Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta" (made famous in the cult film Office Space). The former president of Def Jam South, he's collaborated with everyone from Kanye West, Ice Cube and Nas, and had many solo hits such as "Guess Who's Back" feat. Jay-Z and "Smile" feat. Tupac. But before that, he was a kid from Houston in love with rock-and-roll, listening to AC/DC and KISS.

In Diary of a Madman, Scarface shares how his world changed when he heard Run DMC for the first time; how he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and started selling crack; and how he began rapping as the new form of music made its way out of New York and across the country. It is the account of his rise to the heights of the rap world, as well as his battles with his own demons and depression. Passionately exploring and explaining the roots and influences of rap culture, Diary of a Madman is the story of hip-hop-the music, the business, the streets, and life on the south side Houston, Texas.

Cool, deej, I'll junp on board your "mixtapes ARE albums" bandwagon once we start letting them have a critical shelf life of longer than nine months unless it's lil wayne.

scarface was on the nightly show the other night and he was ... odd. made a left-field analogy comparing the Baltimore water company and residents who can't pay their bills to hawks/squirrels, then refused to answer the "keep it 100" question. also wore a backpack the entire time.

Scarface recently came very close to winning a Houston City Council seat, sadly losing in the runoff election.
