I took the advice on this thread and bought my last two pairs of Levis as tight as possible and I'm not sure it is the right decision. One pair fits around the waste but is a bit tight around the thighs, so much so that when I walk up the subway stairs I feel very conscious of working against the stiffness of the material. The other pair fits throughout the leg but is a bit tight around the stomach. When i come home I have to undo the top button so that I can be comfortable. Did I follow your advice too literally?

laurel, please explain this 'bias cut cotton twill' thing and how to spot it, since i know nothing about fabric.

Uh. Denim is a twill. It stretches "on the bias" that is, around your round parts (as do many other woven fabrics to some degree, the gradual stretch and fiber "memory" is just a quality of cotton in general). Which is pretty much everywhere, since jeans are constructed as flat items but have to go on non-flat bodies. You don't have to know anything about fabric! :D

Mary, I'm wearing a new pair of jeans right now that I bought on...last Thurs? One week and about 4 wearings later, they are still a little too tight but still stretching gradually. Personally, that's the tightness I want over the life of the jeans. If they stretch too much now, they'll be baggy in three months. The first few wearings are def not comfortable!

I've had these jeans for a couple months. Maybe I need to distinguish between jeans that look good and jeans that are comfortable to wear around the house? Or maybe I really did buy both pairs a size too small.

virginia plain, have you worn them much since? i got a pair of levis that seemed a bit snug when i bought them and now they are totally stretched out.. but i wore them around quite a lot during the summer..

oops, xpost. i also notice maybe the darker washes are harder to stretch, my earlier pair were pretty light blue.. also i guess i bought the cheap kind of levis, i know they make a better quality style that would take longer. (had a pair like that in a beautiful dark wash that were $$$ since bought in europe, and went and gave them away for being too short.. not thinking that soon enough rolled up jeans would be back in style!! damn)

I only buy the darkest wash that isn't black, and yeah, the fabric is a little stiffer and harsher than the lighter colors, and it was DEFINITELY not cooperative last week! It's just getting kind of wearable as of today.

I wear both pairs on the weekends, but kind of only outside the house. Inside, I change into something more comfy. The waistline can't really stretch that much though can it? Both jeans are a kind of stiff, lacking in stretch fabric.

I'm totally old man set in his ways with jeans now. I go to the levi's store and get one pair each of 32/32 505s and 527s in whatever wash they have at the time that looks good.

guys I just have to say, I love Gap's "long" jeans and in Canada they are about $90 a pair but I paid $45 in Michigan for them! This is when the dollar was at par, too... SO unfair :(

Got a pair of dry RRL (boutique Ralph Lauren label, super-expensive Americana stuff) jeans for $65 rather than $210 retail. Japanese selvedge, etc.. I should stock up, these are dope.
