"Cigarette Tricks" (0:18! that closes the thread I guess)

on 2nd thought - thats the correct answer for this thread.
it's one of Pollard's best songfs actually.

also - we can all agree that all or at least most GBV under one minute songs are great.

lock thread.

i did suggest in the opening post that songs discussed be under one minute, but I actually would be interested to know what people interpret as "time-efficient" in terms of song structure and harmonic content without limiting it to a very specific number of seconds. for instance, i don't know many bands like GBV that have either the chutzpah or the compositional chops to cycle through a sort of verse-bridge-chorus structure without repeating anything. this durchkomponiert approach is pretty uncommon in pop music.

to clarify: when i say "pop music" i mean that as opposed to "classical," or "traditional," i.e. folk songs or lieder

i leap toward the south yeah
and attempt to burn my bridges
way down to the equator
and back up north with the wind
i'm traveling and last i heard
twelve sad stories
from disciples of the sun
so we rang the bell and fired the gun
to worship the perfect and sometimes cruel
impartiality of the sun

Favorite short GBV song - "The Ascended Master's Grog Shop", 50 something seconds i think but a lot of it is dramatic silence

aog208 you're right about their restraint in regards to repetition. Its probably the most revolutionary part about them musically. It probably has something to do with them building many of their songs over recycled jam sessions, so they just work with what is there.

eight years pass...

"your name is wild" ("and i'll say now to you, so what the useless paid in town; you chose me to reach for the nomads / hooray for the day!"): and i'll pay the angels to give you my charm / you are safer now. "god" knows it, too :)
