i like the early ST because there's a lot more intensity to it. on later records (namely the late 80s and early 90s output, as i haven't really heard beyond there) mike sounds strangely subdued, like he's barely asserting himself above the music, which is rather tepid thrash to begin with.

gotta say i like COC a fair bit more than ST overall.

Last week. It's a great album.

Only Suicidal I really listen to anymore is the No Mercy thing.

well, that I don't agree. the songwriting on How Will I Laugh Tomorrow is top notch, while instrumentally being awesome as well. Lights Camera Revolution isn't as consistent but when it's on, it's a kick to the head.

and re: Muir's voice, well, did anyone really expect him to do his hardcore yells over thrash? He was going for a more 'melodic' thing, and yea, Mike Muir's voice DOES get annoying at times because of how tinny and wimpy it sounds when he sings, but the melodies are still catchy, and he still puts oodles of passion into it. he just channels it differently.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Monday, 13 September 2010 06:20 (thirteen years ago) link

i think those records are probably due for my re-evaluation. but i just think that, while catchy, the songs from that era tend to adhere to a very basic thrash model with song structures that are a little too pedestrian and guitar leads that are probably a touch too flamboyant. mike muir's voice often sounds uneasy over the workmanlike guitar and drum assault and sometimes you get the sense that he's barely hanging in there. this is hardly the case live, mind you. when i saw ST play, mike was on fire and had the crowd 100% under his spell.

listening to the title track for 'how will i laugh tomorrow'. have always been a sucker for an ominous guitar intro.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 07:26 (thirteen years ago) link

perhaps i should clarify about my guitar leads comment as they're no more flamboyant in style than what you hear on say, rust in peace. but i do think they're all over the shop and not used in a disciplined, calculated way - more as an afterthought, as in "let's cover up every inch of spare space here with guitar solos!".

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

more as an afterthought, as in "let's cover up every inch of spare space here with guitar solos!"

I don't think that's an afterthought, I think it's a deliberate strategy. After all, the guitar solo goes all the way through "Institutionalized" on the debut. I happen to love the endless guitar soloing. I also think it's really important to acknowledge Muir as a lyricist. Most hardcore, thrash and crossover bands were yelling about beer or boneheaded politics, but he was talking about emotional pain and stuff in terms that would normally have been verboten to emotionally closed-off teenage metalheads. "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow" is a really great song about depression that's almost unprecedented in metal, except for maybe "Fade To Black" by Metallica.

i have always liked the lyrics, yeah. i think the band identifies the issues and problems faced by its listeners, and this point of recognition along with the energy and vitality of the music can be extremely positive and uplifting.

I saw them play in Montreal a couple weeks ago, for the first time after buying Join the Army 26 years ago, and I was blown away. The band was great, Mike was in terrific form, lent a really positive vibe to the fest, and they cranked out classic after classic for an hour. I had a big stupid smile on my face the whole time.

The current incarnation of ST is indeed fantastic, I've seen them a couple times through the years and I'd say they've never been as good as they are now.

I bought an ST T-t-shirt because it looked cool* and I really liked Institutionalized when it was on Beavis & Butthead. Never found a record of theirs where I grew up. Have never heard another song of theirs.

*it was a skeleton skateboarding, or something. It said Venice Beach at the bottom and my gran asked if they were Italian.

Suicidal Tendencies (1983) - Total Classic!
Join the Army (1987) - Very underrated and I find myself playing it as much as the debut.
How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today (1988) - Possibly the most underrated metal album ever.

Then there are these three:
Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit...Déjà Vu (1989)
Lights...Camera...Revolution! (1990)
The Art of Rebellion (1992)

A few decent tracks, maybe I could make one really good album between them, but a lot of filler.

Never had much time for anything released more recently.

It's too bad that "2013" was so mediocre, because the current lineup is such an excellent live band.

I liked 2013 but this new one seems more focused. it's not mind-blowing but the songs are catchy and rock and I can tolerate Mike's voice more now than when he was younger, as it's deeper and less whiney. plus his band is hella tight.

lord, tho, sometimes I just wanna slap him and say "dude you're 53, why are you fronting like you're still 19 and your parents don't get you, maaaaan"

Last night I was pondering why the Infectious Grooves Plague That Makes Your Booty Move is never included with that Best of Fall 1991 roundup like Nevermind, Use Your Illusion, Ten, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, and Badmotorfinger. Pretty sure that everyone I knew had a copy of the album. Oh, whither the great funk-metal revolution?

Anyway, ended up watching the music video for Therapy. Had the belated realization that Mike's vocals on the verse are heavily influenced by Joe Jackson's Got the Time. And as if that weren't enough, Robert Trujillo's bass solo feels like a tip of the hat to Bakithi Kumalo's solo in Paul Simon's Call Me Al.

Mike Muir has the weirdest voice, it's thin af and amelodic but they wouldn't sound right with anybody else. it sounded more at home on the s/t but his weird simple melodic whine really fits How Will I Laugh Tomorrow perfectly, and also, well, in my 20s, this was one of the few bands I felt I could identify with in terms of what I was feeling.

I emailed Mike once and he wrote back and he signed it

I'm going on the 29th, it was a Christmas gift to me, where I'm also going to visit my aunt out of town. my cousin, who I haven't seen in 20+ years, is going to be at the show, and my aunt doesn't talk to him anymore.

oooh fun! I haven't seen them since 2017 though and they always put on a phenomenal show. the mosh pit is insane during "Institutionalized"
