Time of the season is so much better than the rest of this album. You might as well not vote for somebody to love on surrealistic pillow because wouldn't want to be predictqble by picking a truly great song over solid workmanlike album cuts.

Result of this poll is the sort of horrid clumsy Americanism one might have expected. Obviously it's not a bad song but it's also the one I expected in that video

It might be about the 8th or 9th best song on the album, will give it that

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:28 (three years ago) link

Not really a favourite of mine either.

I Want Her She Wants Me is the correct best song

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:48 (three years ago) link

I'd have voted "Beechwood Park".

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 20 February 2021 14:02 (three years ago) link

Still "Hung Up On a Dream", despite the silly lyric about men with flowers resting in their hair.

I might have voted for Friends of Mine. Very stark contrast between chipper surface/sad lyrical undertones there

Yeah, I just listened to the album recently after too much time away from it and was pleasantly reminded how great it is throughout, but 'Hung Up on a Dream' is still and always has been the one that makes me go whoa. Sure, it'sa bit overwrought and maudlin but it's also gooseflesh the whole way through. 'Walking in the Sun' has a similar effect (non-album track, I believe, it's in the Zombie Heaven box set).

yeah really lame winner... totally sounds out of place on this album imo... it’s all about that soupy end of the first side.. beechwood park, hung up on a steam... would’ve voted time of the season, honestly tho

brimstead, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

steam on

brimstead, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

I prefer the steamier tracks too.

I would have voted Brief Candles I think, but HUOAD a verrrrry close second

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link

“time of the season” is certainly steamy

Strong contender for "the most overrated underrated album" afaic, it's good but give me a singles and b-sides collection over this any day.

This might be Brief Candles just b/c it's the one where Colin Blunstone starts singing the most times.

(xp) Disagree there, I've never really liked anything else they did.

Nothing against the winner but yeah, Hung Up On a Dream really does it for me, perfect song. Glad that it’s remained fairly off-the-radar, I could easily see it becoming a defining-the-60’s standard and getting beaten to death like White Rabbit.

I feel that I must be preaching to the choir here but in case there are members of the choir who haven't yet heard the word, the Left Banke's Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina is an incredibly worthy companion to this album.

"Maybe After He's Gone" always strikes me as an obvious influence on Big Star.

I'm not sure I hear that... maybe in "India Song"?

A few weeks ago my kid bought his first Internet vinyl, and it was a 68 US press Odyssey and Oracle. Or something. Anyhow he drag me upstairs within an hour and said listen listen. And this will be our year has a horn section and it feels quite strange.

xpost The aforementioned Zombie Heaven box set (which stunningly seems to still be in print, I got mine sometime in the late '90s) has, I believe, all of their recorded material. Worth it, imo.

Thx i am gonna hunt up and buy for the kid 👍
