regular ice cream makes me thirsty enough.

ian, Monday, 17 November 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

hello! i need a really really tasty upscale restaurant in manhattan. something that will impress southern aristrocrat types from nashville while also catering to a contemporary new york lady

...

Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

where in manhattan?

:) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Sunday, 30 November 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

what do the following words and phrases mean?

"tasty," "upscale," "impress," "southern aristrocrat," "contemporary," "lady"

gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

this explains a lot

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i am guessing the southern aristocrat has a 'family name'

very quotatious (tehresa), Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i think we're going to Veritas, even tho the decor isn't like WHOA. supposedly the food is wonderful.

Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

u dont want the southern aristocrats to think yr showing off

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno they're kinda showy

Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

in a very polite sort of way?

very quotatious (tehresa), Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

u dont want to show them up tho

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

well the thing is they're taking everyone out for dinner in ny so i think they wanna feel like they're treating us to the cream o the crop ;)

ya they're real polite

Surmounter, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

oh man i love it when ppl take me out to fancy dinners

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i've heard great things about Veritas, though the chef who started it left a while back. (are they wine people? if so, there's also Cru)

showy southern aristocrats looking to take others for cream of crop = Bouley, Daniel, Aureole, Le Bernardin if they're more adventurous, Four Seasons for decor over food. if they picked Veritas, they may be more serious than I'm treating them.

gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

veritas is a real serious wine place, make sure youve got someone knowledgeable with u surmo

:) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, also Gotham Bar and Grill

gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe not as much Aureole

gabbneb, Sunday, 30 November 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

any thoughts on Little Giant? going tomorrow night.

carne asada, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

A+++

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I remember great pasta and I remember a duck egg (perhaps together?)

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link

is per se the best restaurant in new york?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link

great pasta and duck egg sounds great to me. thanks!

carne asada, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i think many would say that if they have to choose a best, it might be per se. i can't imagine it's twice as good as Jean Georges, which is almost half the price.

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

it gets the top food rating in the latest Zagat, ahead of Le Bernardin, Daniel and Jean Georges, and also the top service rating, plus 2nd place for decor (after over-the-top, Park-viewing Asiate). it's not among the top 10 most popular restaurants.

Michelin gives it 3 stars along with Jean Georges, Le Bernardin and Masa, while Gayot places it and Daniel on top, with the other three a step below

The NYT gives all five of these four stars, while NY magazine gives Per Se four stars along with 9 other restaurants, a step below five-starred Le Bernardin and Masa

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Is it not among the top ten most popular because of its price?

Dandy Don Weiner, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i get take out from there sometimes :/

ice cr?m, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

only five of the ten most popular, all of which are at least moderately expensive (but none of which are super-expensive), are among the top 10 for food

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

you get takeout from per se?

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Basically everything in Zagat should be ignored.

I'M ACTUALLY FINE (I DIED), Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

:) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

that has always been my suspicion too.

carne asada, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Zagat is one among a number of useful data points, though often less useful than others. its utility may vary with its local contributorship. for NY, I find NY Mag the most useful.

gabbneb, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Little Giant was real good, only negative was that they parked us at the bar for a half-hour even though we had a rez

dmr, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

zagat is good as a manhattan neighborhood directory.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I went to that new taco place in Wburg that they wrote about in the Times. La Superior

pork torta was the bommmmmb

tacos are cheap and pretty good but v. small (if I was making a meal outta just tacos there I'd need four or five)

dmr, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

everything there was really small. also had really bad servrice. hecho en dumbo is pretty similar and superior (haha).

mizzell, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't have a torta though.

mizzell, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

i really liked la superior.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

portions aren't enormous, although we didn't have a problem with the sizes considering that prices were pretty low. we ate a ton for about $40 incl tax/tip.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

that's true, things were priced pretty reasonably. nothing was very memorable for me, taste-wise.

mizzell, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't think i'd go out of my way for it, but i'm very happy to have it fairly close by - especially for brunch.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

torta was almost like pork stew meets a sandwich .... shredded pork on bread but served in a bowl (cause the bread gets all mushy)

taco lengua was pretty good too I thought

dmr, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

has anybody been to Char No. 4 yet

they were on my radar for the bourbon but apparently the food's pretty good too

dmr, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

the fish tacos were our favorite, i think... they were topped with a pickled onion kind of thing that was so tasty. the flautas were also great, which surprised me because i have bad chi-chi's associations with flautas, but the green sauce served with them is fantastic.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost - no. want to try that place.

lauren, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link

wife was there and approved but i have no further details (char #4)
