Although, tbh, that line in question is almost always lol-worthy.

d00d, I actually really like the first two Interpol records! there was a period from, like, fall 2008 to the beginning of 2009 where that's what I listened to the most

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:15 (thirteen years ago) link

then I listened to Our Love To Admire, didn't like it -- did like the Banks solo record, but it doesn't touch either of the first two Interpol LPs. looks like this one isn't gonna be that great, but we'll see

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I think there's a certain downhill trend:

Turn On the Bright Lights - 9,0
Antics - 8,4 (definitely a grower, but after it clicked it's magical)
Our Love to Admire - 7,7 (a few standout tracks and sometimes a bit dull, but still great)
Interpol - 7,0 - (first half is more than promising, second half is pedestrian, expect the great closing track)

really really dug both their first two albums as well. and I love their lyrics.

can't understand how even fans didn't hear that they were a one-album band.

i liked antics better than bright lights, less straight up early 00s post-punk revival and more interesting and catchy melodies imo

Why is Pfork making markers and me wait until next week for our Interpol review...?

Bought this at Target today for $7.99. Haven't listened to it yet (busy transcribing an interview with Phil Anselmo) but my wife likes it.

man, no review? thinking of going to buy the record today -- maybe

markers, Friday, 10 September 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I've listened once and it's not a record that I immediately love or hate. Mood is consistent throughout, no songs really jumped out at me as THE SINGLE or THE BEST SONG. Overall it's not offensively bad, but a bit of a snooze.

is the production any better than Our Love to Admire's?

Not sure, I listened on cheap earbuds. ;_;

Might get around to listening to this, only because I recently was reminded that a few songs from Turn Off The Bright Lights were "quite good". Then I'll be let down and have to punch my balls or something.

Brutal in its unflinching accuracy, economy and fairness. Solid state (and that's from a guy who harshes on [nabisco] as a side job).

Yeah, this is still way better than the last one.

Agree, Pfork was way too kind to that horrific last album. Nabisco OTM, though.

Yeah, I can't disagree with anything he had to say, but I'd have bumped the score up a couple of points.

OLTA was one of those albums that, as soon as I saw the cover art (still-life wildlife portrait???) and the track listing ("No I in Threesome"???) I was like "oooooooohhhhh shit, this album is going to blow."

Hi. What'd I miss?

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Pfork gave Interpol s/t album a well-deserved 10.0 Best New Music as well as Best Album of 2010 since it obviously has no competition.

I thought it would be hilarious! I guess it didn't entirely follow through on that either.

R u happy that Pitchfork finally euthanized Interpol so that we don’t have to keep reading?
Who is next? Broken Social Scene? Animal Collective?
Is Interpol ‘over’?
Does Interpol even ‘sell records 2 mainstreamers’?
Is Interpol for failed cool dads?

cee-oh-tee-tee, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah the OLTA cover was a real 'oh shit' moment. Especially if you thought that the Interpol artwork /website/ merch in general around the time of 2002 was *the best* you had ever seen by a band in the modern era. Way classier and cooler than The Strokes at the time. *Man* i miss old Interpol.

piscesx, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Are their sensibilities so different? All I hear different about this record versus the first two is that this one has less hooks and we're all older.

six years pass...

incredibly depressing interview with Carlos from last October that I just heard last night. goes in depth about the making of the s/t record and how he lost his mind and left the band. apparently he decided to leave, then recorded all of his bass and keyboard parts and gave them to the engineer, and never saw the band again. so the s/t record is vastly different than what it was "supposed to be"... thank goodness, I love the first half of this record so much, "Summer Well" is as good as anything on Antics. Interpol trying to go symphonic was bad news. Carlos says their goal going into the s/t record was to "make our Kid A."
