sure, i agree. it's funny though walking around dc on a summer weekend and 85-90% of the guys are wearing cargo shorts.

Yeah, I got all worked up about cargos after the ILE thread about them - "oh no I will have to throw out all my clothes". Then I went outside and got in touch with reality. There are maybe ten people who hate cargo shorts and they're all on the internet.

given as a reason why people think they're horrible. I don't care, I'm on vacation in the South, I'm wearing some cargo shorts. and not those short shorts that are popular now in Brooklyn, I don't have a death wish.

ok, i hate the idea of cargos because the look is very dave matthews band to me. also wearing them can be really annoying cuz the pockets feel like way too much material.

I don't like the oversized ones, cargo shorts seem to have undergone the same infantilization as everything else marketed to middle-American men -- a lot of the ones I see are way too baggy, like some kind of cargo/surfer hybrid. The sloppiness is the major offensive factor, I think. Prefer the Army-Navy surplus style with a closer fit.

this seems like an exaggeration. they dont look great or fashionable but they're not, like, forbidden.

So I went looking for shorts yesterday and every pair of shorts was either cargo or that hideous nu-plaid that somehow became common this year. What do I have to do to find plain, non-cargo shorts in a normal fabric?

i don't know i haven't been shorts-shopping in a while, i'm a little nervous

i'm into safari shorts, though, which are similar but better IMO. the cut is cleaner.

thats not a great example but some of them are super cute. old navy womens was on a safari kick recently, i think.

i just dont think the pockets really add anything to the shorts--the lines on regular shorts are much cleaner, with the pockets, even nice shorts look bulky and ill-fitting

also i find it sort of bizarre that its easier to find cargo shorts than it is to find regular old shorts.

lands end and other new englandy non-ironic deck shoe clothing place has those basic, mid-length shorts. Skinny, above-the-knee shorts are actually a staple of coastal Northeast ware, so as far as I'm concerned everyone's walking around looking like my Connecticut attorney uncle.

Good tip, Burt--I never think of Lands End because it makes me feel like my mom. They have shorts organized by inseam--6", 9", or 11". Don't know if I'm ready for 6" shorts.

this time of year especially, a lot of people don't want too wear too many clothes, just the minimum demanded by social convention. also, guys especially prefer a certain measure of freedom in certain regions.

i prefer my shorts, like most other things, to be fairly minimal, but extra pockets can be handy at times.

haha i was just gonna post that. they're definitely not all that absurd. a lot of the shorts i've seen are more structured in cut and fabric, and not as american apparel 70s throwback. they're just kind of short.

I bought a pair of cargo shorts at uniqlo because I needed shorts at the last minute. They're really not bad -- they have a slim line and the pockets don't stick out too much. I think the problem is not really cargo shorts so much as baggy cargo shorts.

im not strictly anti short but i do think many mens could benefit from investing in some lightweight summer pants

i don't own any cargo shorts, but i favor comfort over style always

i wear shorts if im in a chill state, i cant just wear them around like nothings going on, if i lived in a super hot place prob tho
