kelly green and royal blue are definitely 2 of my favorite fashion colors

Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i have a pair of the jbrand 'lovestory' in sort of a washed out grey.. but they were on 50% off or more. feel like i have to lose 5 pounds to wear them so they're still sitting there in the bag, two months later.

daria-g, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, here's my jeans question. i know you're supposed to buy them kind of tight in the store as they'll surely relax. but how tight is tight? i'm always paranoid about getting something that makes my legs look like sausages, and then end up with jeans that are baggier than they should be. i may be trying on fancypants jeans tomorrow, hence the question.

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link

TIGHT. I buy jeans inappropriately tight as in TOTALLY stuffed into the legs, and wear them around the house a little. Every single time, I think "Wo, am I really still this size? Yowch!" and every time, within 4-5 wearings I need to wet them to shrink them back up.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Bias stretch is an amazing thing.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i buy jeans as comfortable as possible & within 4 or 5 wearings they are falling down around my thighs

thank god 4 belts & water

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

ha. thanks laurel - i have the jbrand pair and another solid grey pair (kind of skinny) that are TIGHT and i keep thinking i got the wrong size but haven't worn to stretch out at all yet.

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, the Levis that I like are around 1-2% spandex (or whatever), depending on the color. So maybe that's part of the effect. But I still think you have to take advantage of the bias stretch of cotton twill and go for it.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

daria, where did you come across the cheap jbrands? i looked on ebay and they all seem to be size 0, which i'm not.

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

barney's co op sale. they weren't super cheap but i think like $85 instead of $160+?

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

revolve always has denim on sale, too, but it can be difficult to find anything above a 27w.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm kind of scared of revolve, after looking at a dress you posted i clicked through to summer tops, and they were all so expensive. i just can't bring myself to spend even $90 on a top, let alone $300, which was probably the average price. i'm not sure when/if i'll get over this, but i guess it's probably for the best, really...

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

the jeans that are on sale tend to be drastically discounted, though. i'd say it's worth a look, esp as you're pretty slim - you'll probably have more luck with the sizes than i do.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:14 (fifteen years ago) link

laurel are you quite tall? i find that skinny jeans just don't work on me at all because i have super short legs, big thighs AND big hips, so i just look dumpy in them.

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:43 (fifteen years ago) link

No talk of raw denim?

libcrypt, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I have never tried skinny jeans. I'm tall but not skinny with wide hips but pretty good legs. Maybe I should try but they've always given me the fear!

ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:59 (fifteen years ago) link

erica you'd probably look super hot in skinnies, esp those ones posted at the top. i still can't figure out what sort of jeans i should get. i have these awesome grey cotton pants i bought years ago for like $15 in australia and i love them: they're really fitted through the leg, with a really narrow bootcut, and they are the perfect length! didn't have to take up the hems! but the seams on the inner thighs are finally wearing through so must find a replacement.

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I'm gonna try the ones Laurel keeps praising (those pictured upthread) once I have more $.

Why do jeans have to be so complicated? Grrrr.

ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:12 (fifteen years ago) link

ps RR - I got your FB message and address has been noted. :-)

ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Uniqlo has some super cute jeans right now. I didn't try any on though, because last time I tried on their jeans they ran very very small.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:38 (fifteen years ago) link

No talk of raw denim?

My go-to jeans are G-Star Raw in cigarette (super skinny) cut.

I love, love, love them now even though I only thought I was buying them because they were cheap. They are a mix of super-dark black and blue in kind of a stripe (I don't know how this is "raw" but it is). Also they were aspirational -- I bought them one size small as they were a bargain.

My only advice on jeans is to buy them as tight and as dark as possible. Then never put them in the dryer, ever.

felicity, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i just can't bring myself to spend even $90 on a top

i guess since i started sorta tangentially being involved in the fashion world, my whole concept of the cost/value of clothing has changed dramatically... its like now "ooooh those shoes are only $200!! i should totally get them!" when several years ago i'd be like wtf $200? i just took a peek at whats hanging in my closet and only saw 2 things that were less than $90... oops! i can drop a months rent on a comme des garcons trench coat and a shitload on dinner at gramercy tavern, but i have the hardest time justifying spending ten bucks on a new pillow case when the one i have now is ratty and has holes all over it. seriously, wtf is wrong with me. fucked up priorities....

aaanyways, jeans, i have a pair of tsubi's ive had for a couple years that i loooove, but went to the store and its not as nice anymore... im always daunted by the walls of denim at stores. dunno what to get.

phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:08 (fifteen years ago) link

this girl i know just spent $2000 (with her discount) on this lanvin bag

http://www.aloharag.com/highseas/assets/images/english/store/women/ln/bags/aw0r4mnvy/a.jpg

$2000.. (!)

phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:12 (fifteen years ago) link

oh that meant to go in the post pics of bags thread, but i guess relevent to my last post

phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahahahahhaah oh god no, I'm 5'3" and hippy. But once I decided to love my thighs my perspective just kind of...shifted, and skinny jeans made me proud of my figure, whereas all the longer, boot-cut jeans I used to wear with heels seemed like I was trying to fool people.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Not that I want this head-to-toe look, but I don't think this girl is feeling apologetic about her ass:

http://mybabyjo.com/clothes/capridenim_lg.jpg

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:45 (fifteen years ago) link

it might also be a problem that i don't have nice ankles, otherwise i think i might be able to pull of this look.

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, you don't have to wear capris. I do prefer the skinny jeans short-ish, just around the ankle bone, but that's just me.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

My only advice on jeans is to buy them as tight and as dark as possible.

I agree with this!^^^^ Except now that it's summer Levis thinks we all want light blue, instead of dark denim. Bastards.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Wear them in a thinner material, you just need to try the texture, some jeans are made thicker than others and are hotter. I mean I could go into extreme detail about how every shape can wear those skinny jeans/capris look if you know how to do it but basically wear jeans in the summer but make sure the material isn't one thats too heavy. You'll know, trust.

VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I ain't worn jeans in over two years, I think? I might never wear them again. This is just me, but I don't think that jeans are very flattering on fifty-something year-old guys. Pair them with sneakers and it gets truly blecch. I want to look dignified in my old age, ffs.

dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:26 (fifteen years ago) link

so you're telling us you're not paul newman or robert redford eh

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

guess so!

dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:50 (fifteen years ago) link

But basically I think I just don't like jeans. Period.

The revival in recent years of designer jeans with stupid embroidery on the back pockets really rankled me. I forgot to complain about that on the "Nineties Fashion" thread...

dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I respect your position on jeans, dell. It's good to have standards.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks, that's a kind way of putting it!

dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:01 (fifteen years ago) link

laurel, are the wrangler jeans you like the slim-fit cowboy cut?

lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i ask because i was just looking around at various jeans online and found a wrangler style that looked decent: mid-rise, slim fit, straight leg.

lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Wrangler? I've never bought Wranglers...? I went through 2 or 3 pars of Lee Dungarees but they stopped making the ones I loved.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, ok. i mixed up lee and wrangler.

lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

ok you guys, i bought the jbrand jeans. i was meeting my mom at nordstrom anyway, so figured i would try them on which would immediately stop all my longing because they looked so stupid. but they didn't, i really like them.

only trouble is-- they're way more low rise than i'm used to (this is partly because i have a natural urkel waist so everything feels too low rise to me), and i have a tiny bit of muffin top hanging over. they are tight (and very dark), so i don't know if that will improve as it stretches out over the next few wears? i never ever wear tops that bare the midriff, either, so think it shouldn't matter because it will be completely covered. but if it does, please tell me and i will go get my $200 back, that would be OK.

colette, Friday, 20 June 2008 20:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Ladies:

Take a look at A.P.C. New Cure or Hipster model jeans.

IMO these are the best jeans in the women's market.

apc jeans are relatively short inseam, right? hudson i think are v long, i haven't tried any myself

daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

shasta, please help me with A.P.C. jeans sizing. i tried on the new cure this weekend in a size 29. in levi's or whatever i usually wear a 27. the 29 was too small to even button and just barely made it over my hips. now, looking at their website i see that 30 is the largest size they even offer. is APC trying to tell me that i am a fat?

bell_labs, Monday, 23 June 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

now everything i'm reading about APC jeans says to go several sizes down from your usually size? what the hell?

bell_labs, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Guys, my company's CEO sent out an email on Friday saying we can all wear jeans through Labor Day. Woo! And I was about to buy some summer work pants. jeans and $$$ saved.

sunny successor, Monday, 23 June 2008 15:32 (fifteen years ago) link

A.P.C. are true to size. They will shrink if you wash in hot water and machine-dry, so I'd rinse in cool water when you need to clean the garment.

The seat and yoke of most jeans are constructed via using chainstitching to make double-interlock flat seams. This means is that jeans in their native state will give a little in the seat(butt)/lower back. With a pair of A.P.C.s that will last at least 10 years, you should try to find the most snug fit possible because they will "stretch" (ie, due to seam construction as opposed to fabrication components). I would go for the 29 (with effort) and if that's too uncomfortable try the 30. Raw denim is very coarse and stiff at first, it will begin softening immediately with wear.

Many US companies began "vanity sizing" in the 80s, convincing people that they wore a smaller size than what the garment measures out to be (eg, a size 27" garment measures to a true 29"). Some brands (like Levi's) resisted this trend for over a decade until they saw their sales decrease because those brands "didn't fit" the consumer. European and Asian companies do not vanity size which may explain the variance.

I think the saving grace for her blue jeans is the careful, clever cuff folding. Or it might be the vertical lines of the wash. Or that she wears them so low

one year passes...

y'all I am craving a pair of simple slim-cut dark blue indigo jeans w/ yellow stitching, I used to love 511's but now they're all stretchy w 1% elastene which makes me think they won't last more than a year. I also used to love UNIQLO's but they only make 100% cotton jeans in straight cut now. Can I get jeans like this for under $100???? I'm reading that Unbranded is decent???

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:45 (five years ago) link

the thing is that you can’t tell how big the legs are unless you roll em up because they’re wide enough

mh, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

I think the Levi's 514s ( i have to double check) are pretty good for tall dudes with thin legs. They aren't stretchy but there is definitely a little variability in softness depending on the wash. Plus levi's always has some type of sale going on online.

Edwins rule, for me. I just bought a pair of organic cotton slim fit for not much money (I think $A80) on eBay. Dyed, woven, made in Japan too. Their selvedge denim ones, and the "sen" denim (kind of ashy indigo) are great too.
