Guilded eternity is one of the most sorely underated albums. It stands on the edge of a whole new dimension of rock and no-one else I've heard since took up the gauntlet and went with it in the 13 years since its release. There are a lot of subtleties on that album and its gets better and better with repeated listening.
I didn;t like main too much. loop are proof that generally when academic 'high brow' music techniques are brought into 'low brow' art is generally more exiting than the other way around. Main just seem rather undifferentied from the slew of other 1990's emasculated isolationaist noise 'experimental' noise fiddlers.

they were like a crappy heavy metal version of spacemen 3. they sucked. you can always find their records in the sale bins over here if you wanna find out if i'm right.

I was sufficiently intrigued to invest in a vinyl copy of...some Loop album or other (maroon sleeve, long hair) a while back. Listened to it once, it reminded me of Swervedriver, not heard it since. Save me.

Search for (but expect not to find) their version of Godflesh's 'Like Rats' which came out as a split on ClawFist as part of their singles club. Eclipsed only by Godflesh's version of 'Straight To Your Heart' on the other side.

I think Robert Hampson plays on both sides as he was in both bands at the time.

Loop were far more sexy and wore better trousers. Also wore nice pointy chelsea boots verses Spacemen 3's dreadful moccassins. Early Loop had a stand up bowlie-girl drummer as well which was ACE.

Revive ... I'm hearing "Fade Out" for the first time now. Based on the three records I've heard (FO, World in My Eyes (a compilation, yes), and Guilded Eternity) I believe Loop were wholly unspectacular until "Guilded". With that album, they reached a new level of superheavyweight RAWK. Fuzz guitar melodies, tunefulness, song transitions, etc. were all disposed of, in favour of one sole purpose: pound dark riffs into a bloody pulp.
Maybe it's the production on their earlier stuff that's influencing me (the songs just don't sound, I don't know, *big* enough).
S3 kill Loop, although strangely enough, they only really sound alike on GI (Loop's last album) and "Sound of Confusion" (S3's first).
My $0.02. Breathe Into Me rules it. I'd also like to mention that GI contains the only worthwhile musical usage of the phrase "Be Here Now". That's all.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

If you think the earlier material doesn't quite work in terms of production, give an ear to Wolf Flow, which collects their John Peel sessions. The early songs there -- especially the utterly apocalyptic version of "Straight To Your Heart," which I rave on about a bit in my first post upthread -- will probably capture your attention much more readily.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 30 April 2004 01:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh goody I get to talk about Loop. I take heart that albums such as "Heaven's End" and "The World In Your Eyes" are still solid enough to sound good to new listeners. Back in '87-'88 I was a real Loophead, and particularly liked "Heaven's End". But I played that more recently and the production just made me go "ouch!" What a shame.

I've STILL got "Fade Out" on CD (though actually toying with selling it a few times) and because of this thread, I will be pulling it out as soon as the new Crispy Ambulance CD stops playing on my boom box.

My main impression of Loop live is NIRVANA, literally. I saw them at the old 930 Club location in D.C. and this was before Nirvana hit it big and some idiot decided that Nirvana would be a good band to open for Loop. I found the whole thing very sad because there was a whole lot of crowd mania for Nirvana and then a quarter of the people left, leaving Loop as some footnote, like they weren't important at all. I just thought "oh here I go, being the lonely anglophile again"

I thought Gilded Eternity was disappointing when it came out, but it kindof grew on me. DAMN I wish I had it with me now instead of all the way across the country on vinyl at my parent's house.

Next to Loop I don't give a fuck about Spacemen 3.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 30 April 2004 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Agreed that "Burning Prisma" and "Thief of Fire" are the shit. However, a) those are really long songs (lots and lots of riffitude), wouldn't they sound even better if they had been produced "Guilded Eternity"-style?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 April 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Like an idiot I posted this on the Orbital thread by mistake. THANKS FOR RECOMMENDING THE "WOLF FLOW" PEEL SESSIONS RELEASE, NED. I never had that one before. I remember hearing it came out, guess I didn't pay much attention.

I wish people wouldn't call Loop "shoegazer". Loop are about as shoegazer as Coldplay.

It's "A GILDED Eternity", for heaven's (end) sake. That's as in "covered in gold". What would "a guilded eternity" mean? Permanent membership of a mediaeval craftsmen's union?

RE: HASTCo - I have the first record (Jo In Nine-G Hell: pretty dreadful w/ lame songwriting, tries to sound menacing, but just sounds ridiculous in a vaguely gothy way), and the third one (Psychedelische Musique: much better, more abstract, interesting abrasive textures, some of it reminds me a bit of krauty Chrome). Anyone know if the middle one's worth picking up?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 30 April 2004 09:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned is absolutely right about Wolf Flow - it was the first thing I got by them and I tend to attach myself to my introductions to bands more readily, but it's monster heavy and has a ripping production, considering it's some Peel sessions

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 30 April 2004 09:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I listened to "Fade Out" quite recently, it's thee only loop produckt I still have (it's the one w/extra tracks, incl "thief of fire/thief motherfucker") and I still like it a lot, and I think it still holds up, for the most part. What I like about them is that they sound slike a machine. The repetitive riffs make me think of clips of the pistons on a ships engine going up and down. There's something kind of implacable about the way they played their riffs.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 30 April 2004 09:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Damn, that guilded <-> gilded mistake was dumb.
Permanent membership of a mediaeval craftsmen's union?
Forced membership of indefinite duration in an eeeeevil blacksmith death cult?

I never quite understood the Spacemen 3 vs. Loop thing. I mean, sure, I knew the story, but I love(d) them both. I actually listen to Spacemen 3 more than I do Loop these days, which is very much the opposite of what I did back then. But now I have to go home and pull out those albums. Been far too long.

that 1st H&STCo isn't dreadful, but it does sound tentative. i think they just couldn't decide whether to be Can or Cop Shoot Cop. Roli Mosimann's production just overwhelms any personality that more confident music might have expressed. took me forever to get around to Over Valence, but it's much better. like a poppier Loop or maybe a testosterone-fueled Electrealane. there's a H&STCo. 7", Crouch End, on Aquese(?) that's pretty good, more of a Splintered/Husk sound. Psychedelische Musique (Lava Surf Kunst) was assembled in the manner of Faust Tapes and works both as homage and as a damn good listen. have they done anything since as H&STCo? i know John Wills works closely with (wife?) Pinkie Maclure. their latest project, Lumen, turned in one of the most memorable album debuts of 2003, This Day and Age. lovely stuff.

what have Nigel Webb and Neil Mackay been up to?

and what did Savage Opera sound like?

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

HASTCo ... yeah, the first album is tentative, that's a good word for it. At the time, it sounded like a less extreme version of Loop -- the sneer and blackness are there but also an effort to make it more palatable to the average Joe Q. Indie : Wonderstuff Fan.
It comes across really dated now compared to the denser sounds of Loop, the shoegaze bands, and all their descendents.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Neil did an LP, "Thinking Up Things & Then Forgetting Them" on Lissy's, with his then wife, under the name Juicy Eureka. Sort of Stereolab-y, & pretty good. There's been a couple of compilation tracks since can't remember under what name, something long about "Anti-Self". He has stuff recorded but haven't heard about anybody wanting to put it out.

Wandering Boy Poet, Saturday, 1 May 2004 10:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm currently playing Loop's Fade Out and it is amusing trip into the past indeed. I'm surprised by how wonderfully SLUDGY they sound. See back when I listened to this, I'd never taken drugs ever in my life. I didn't think of them as psychedelic, or metal, or rock and roll. They just sounded good.

I can't believe how many times I thought I would sell this CD. I think I tried to once, but the store wouldn't buy it. I didn't mind the music on the CD, but I had been more of a fan of their earlier work, and this was a departure from that. I can't believe in all these years it's never left my posession. I can actually take the production better. Heavens End just sounded so treble-heavy when I tried to play it again recently.

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm also sure that Loop's Fade Out was one of the very first CD's I bought. CD's weren't so prevalent in 1989 as they are today, you know? I think I bought my first CD player in '88.

OK, I d/l'ed "Wolf Flow" and am listening to it now ... yes, this is the kind of sound I was after. It's still not nearly as heavy as "A Gilded Eternity", but production-wise, they're very close. Thanks to all who recommended this.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 2 May 2004 00:13 (nineteen years ago) link

It's still not nearly as heavy as "A Gilded Eternity" ... the album just got to the AGI tracks ... they're plenty heavy.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 2 May 2004 00:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't really agree that the 'A Guilded Eternity' tracks are "heavier" than they're early stuff. In fact, I think the production is cleaner (more instrument separation etc) on it versus the early stuff. For me, 'Fade Out' and the 'Collision' EP are some of the dirrtiest nastiest sounding records ever. It's like they wanted to record a riff from a jet engine or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 2 May 2004 01:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I finally found Fade Out on CD!! Turns out the sound quality is a little disappointing -- I don't get quite the charge of adrenalin with that thin late 80s mastering. That might be your problem with Heaven's End, Bimble. The vinyl sounds fucking huge and possessing.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 2 May 2004 03:39 (nineteen years ago) link

one year passes...
A Gilded Eternity blew my mind back in '90. It was heavy, repetitive (I think 'droney' denotes bliss or calm, two things AGI are NOT), and yet completely complex and became very much a HUGE influence on my music. I love the HASTCO stuff (although in desperation, I foolishly sold PSYCHEDELISCHE MUSIQUE less than two days after I bought it - DAMN YOU RENT! Anyone able to help me out here?), and Main's early stuff (HYDRA-CALM,that 'drumless space' record set) too!

Sadly I think ordering from Cooking Vinyl was a huge mistake, my CD copy still hasn't even shipped, so streaming it in the meantime and considering sourcing a cheaper copy elsewhere. Not sure if this is a standard experience from them or what, but lesson learned.

'A Guilded Eternity' sounded pretty ace to me today giving it a listen for the first time in years. I got to give 'Fade Out' a listen next.

Got to figure Loop might have missed a bit not hanging around another year or two when the Alt-Rock circus broke big worldwide. Main was cool, but it was more of an ambient group.

Those two Loop records I got warm thoughts about as they are in a list of a bunch I found all at once in one semester of doing radio in college. I had a crap early a$$ morning slot, but dug it quite a bit except that one day I came in and both turn tables, the CD player and the tape player had been stolen. Jason Gross of Perfect Sound Forever had the next slot that first semester.
