no one's heard the new album i'm guessing? that's why i started the thread and all...

jaxon, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

its on oink.

gr8080, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:11 (sixteen years ago) link

but i havent heard

gr8080, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I heard Needy girl at a Vice party recently. It sounded good. I feel doubly ashamed.

jim, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

it's great, holds together better as a whole than the first one did. really though it just makes me twitchy until they tour again.

energy flash gordon, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:16 (sixteen years ago) link

i got it yesterday. it's okay. vocals kill it a little for me. but the music isn't bad. i predict trade-in for vinyl.

scott seward, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

no x-post warning!

"it's on oink" uh yeah and it's been in the shops for almost two months

energy flash gordon, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

it might be better than the vice books i've been getting though. what's the trade-in value on those?

scott seward, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

the new one is totally great, the first one was totally :-/

deej, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i think the first one is a really solid record, but I haven't played it in a long time

gff, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i like them, too. i saw them open for the unicorns in 2005 and was pleasantly surprised.

poortheatre, Saturday, 30 June 2007 04:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Needy Girl is in a Reese's ad and it's confusing

Morley Timmons, Saturday, 30 June 2007 05:43 (sixteen years ago) link

the new album is great. 100% = total summer jam, even though it's winter.

it also makes me want listen to lots more of the music that Chromeo obviously listen to - i guess the Eskimo mix is a good place to start?

jabba hands, Saturday, 30 June 2007 06:55 (sixteen years ago) link

lol hemisphere?

deej, Saturday, 30 June 2007 07:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Haven't heard their Eskimo mix yet, but the Ce Soir On Danse! mix on Disque Primeur is aces.

Telephone thing, Saturday, 30 June 2007 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

...wow, that's not very helpful, is it? Disque Primeur and Chromeo's websites are both useless as far as getting the tracklist and horrifyingly Flash-heavy; their Myspace doesn't have it; and Arcade Mode, which I'm fairly sure used to have a tracklist, is out of stock. Ah well.

Telephone thing, Saturday, 30 June 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

i was talking w/ tremendoid about this, but my initial instinct is to be wary of the mixes; what makes them so great? I'd be afraid of it being a sort of generic 80s touchpoint mix or something and i really do enjoy their own music as 80s pastiche more than i think i would enjoy a random 80s mix from hipster dilettantes

deej, Saturday, 30 June 2007 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

try this then. not hipster dilettante

kenny dope's roller disco mix. completely breautiful

thoughts on this? less hipsteur cheese, more collectro authenticity type shit, more r&b less pop than chromeo, i don't think i like it quite as much tho. Still some great songs on it (omg "too young to love")

deej, Sunday, 1 July 2007 06:46 (sixteen years ago) link

more revivalism, less pastiche

deej, Sunday, 1 July 2007 06:46 (sixteen years ago) link

"I'm Your Paradise" is prob the best song actually

deej, Sunday, 1 July 2007 06:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Chromeo playing for free in SF. I have been digging this for months now and will probably check it, seeing its around the corner from my work. http://www.mezzaninesf.com/calendar.asp

s1ocki, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

bf just saw them in williamsburg, had a good time even tho it was barely tolerable, venue wise

Surmounter, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

There is a pre-self-titled album mix floating around called "le mix." Obligatory Klymaxx, Cameo, etc., but some other good stuff. I'm going to the show this saturday @ empty bottle (fits 7.5 people), should be riot-inducing.

valoss, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah thats where i'll be

deej, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Going to see them in a couple of days, LOVED needy girl and some of the rest of that album grew on me... hopefully will be a good time! (venue is kind of budget but not lacking in space)

nile rodgers : chromeo :: big daddy kane : edan

and what, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i enjoy the hipster cheese of it. its certainly a part of the appeal

i dont think anyone would argue this is as great as roger troutman or something

deej, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

also chicks dig on this

max, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

look im not hating just cuz hipster douchebags or whatever (my gf likes hot chip) but unless you own every 80s r&b 12" ever produced theres no excuse to waste time on the vice magazine edition

and what, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

for the price of 1 chromeo record you could buy 15 dollar bin classics

and what, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i d***loaded the chromeo record and will gladly see cameo if i catch them touring for 12 dollars

deej, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i dont know that id necessarily spend $$ on this but i dont really have a problem w/ this kind of pastiche/revival/whatever; id take zapp over these guys any day but ive heard more bounce to the ounce about six million times

max, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

plus if i can use them to get babes into lisa lisa & cult jam then im all for it

max, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

There's something about the best parts of the new one, though, that don't really feel like pastiche -- god knows how, since every individual element seems like pastiche, but there's something about the whole that winds up feeling to me a bit like the difference between Daft Punk and whatever Daft Punk are sampling. (I.e., not really different in content, but somehow vastly different in feel and application and whatnot.)

nabisco, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah and even on the point about shows, cuet girls go to chromeo shows and formerly-cuet 30/40-somethings go to SOS Band reunions

is there an sos band reunion? i would go to that too probably

deej, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

i dont think they ever broke up

strongohulkington, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i would like to take my mom to a chromeo show. she would be a good bellweather to their fidelity and authenticity

strongohulkington, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Them playing with John Oates as mentioned upthread is kind of awesome. fun, nerdy production talk here at and then at 3:50 they start jammin on No Can Do (can't go for that)

more synth and funk record talk
here. These bros are just likable, I like when they speak French to each other.

three years pass...

i thought i would be over them by now but this made me lol

"We’re not openly talking about any of these subjects in our music. Rather than talk about them explicitly we prefer to offer hints for people to make their own minds. When we named the album White Women we thought we’d provoke debates on issues of sex, race and gender. We’re in the midst of a conservative moment in America. The backlash to “Blurred Lines” was so puritanical. White Women is the title of Helmut Newton’s first book.

The other thing that’s super important to us is the question of race. Pat and I are very ambiguous: he’s a Christian Lebanese and I’m an Arab Jew. These things are confusing to most people in America. If people are going to listen to our music, why not make them think too? We made an album that’s racially blurred, an homage to black music titled White Women. You can appreciate it first degree or you can see an intellectual discourse on the war of sexes and race. In that way, it’s neither traditional funk nor traditional electronic music."

their fallon perfomance with death from above is pretty slick.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 10:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah that Fallon performance was so so so good.

this album is dope

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 13:55 (nine years ago) link

this thing is like legit 80% great.

the back half of Somethingood! the teen pop opener. Tory Y Moi is probably someone i am supposed to hate but that song is so good. that hook and the solange hook are pure maple syrup. lots of hooks really. Ezras intld i was ready to HATE but its actually incredible. the sax on Fall Back 2u.

Spottie, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:01 (nine years ago) link

Very, very into this.

Dave Depper (Davey D), Thursday, 15 May 2014 22:55 (nine years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 May 2014 23:09 (nine years ago) link

I've heard half of this - I like the opener a lot; some of the lyrics are a little clunky.

The lede in your pitchfork review was a little bit weird though j0rd - is it really a thing now that all decent albums must have significant written and oral retrospectives on their tenth birthday before officially joining the canon?

is it really a thing now that all decent albums must have significant written and oral retrospectives on their tenth birthday before officially joining the canon?

sadly yes?

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 May 2014 02:22 (nine years ago) link

i admit that it was a bit awkward though. i felt like it was the easiest route to get to my thesis, which is that this album in particular feels like something that really benefits from not being weighed down by expectations and the way people discuss music online writ large (a contrasting album would be like... the EMA record or something)

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 May 2014 02:24 (nine years ago) link

This is a lot better than it needed to be! Little things like the outro on "Play The Fool" & the bridge on "Sexy Socialite" are gorgeous.

(& since nobody's posted it to the thread & the existence thereof cheers me up, here's "Fancy Footwork" getting used in Step Up 3D:

Oliver co-production is the secret weapon here. Likewise for that new Camron/A-Trak joint. Watch out for those guys. Big pop things in their future I think.

anza808, Monday, 19 May 2014 01:12 (nine years ago) link

I love the new album, and especially the extended tracks. They feel like updated 70s/80s funk 12"s that are still fun and listenable despite somewhat weak hooks because of good instrumentation and flow. Jealous is the clear standout and the only one that really works as a sub 4 minute pop track.

this is so pleasant, and works great next to the Calvin Harris songs on my summer playlist (which is still funny to me—never would have believed a year ago would be a statement that made any sense)
