Everyone's heard that they're replacing the Pussycat Dolls on the BEP/PCD tour while Nicole gets over an ear infection, right? roffle roffle roffle

Good for them. They also have the #17 single in the country (and they haven't even went for adds on Pop radio yet!), and they're poisted to have the #1 album.

I meant more in comparison to the completely awful Danity Kane single, but yeah, "He Loves U Not" was alright.

This reminds me of a instance back in the late 80's. My friend Rob and I walked into Bleeker Bob's on West 3rd Street and they were playing this insane caterwaul that was literally driving customers out of the store. Rob went to the counter to ask what it was. And we spent the next few days laughing about it. A little while later, since we'd gotten such a laugh out of it, we figured we should pick it up, but Rob wasn't sure if he'd gotten the name right. We went back to Bleeker Bob's and I picked up the single in question, Now We Are Six by the Happy Flowers. I showed it to the dude behind the counter (a dead ringer for Ringo Starr...I think he may actually still work there) and asked him if this was what I thought it was.

"Well, it's kinda not music!" he said

That's pretty much how I feel about Danity Kane, only without the humor.

So, I totally was good friends in high school with Shannon Bex, one of the two blondes. We were in Jazz Choir together and rode many miles in many different vehicles together. Very nice, intelligent, and down to earth gal. Our 10 year reunion is in a few months and I'm looking forward to asking some P. Diddy questions.

I would be so so so so so tempted to ask "Are you embarrassed that the name of your group is Danity Kane? What does that even mean?" if I had been friends with any of those girls.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

According to their MySpace,

"Danity Kane takes its name from a female anime superhero conceived by Dawn, whose skills as an illustrator caught Diddy's eye."

But I'll be sure to ask her "are you embarrassed that the name of your group is Danity Kane?" because that's a very relevant question.

"mirrorirrorirrorirrorirror"

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 10:34 (fifteen years ago) link

quelle coincidence, been jamming this for the past week. secret weapon = the amazing vocal arrangements, all those harmonies shooting off at unexpected tangents. most girl groups around now, you can't really tell that there are 5 or however many singers in the group, but DK make the most of their numbers here.

'pretty boy' is currently my favourite - that "OW!" after the middle 8 before the chorus floods back in is one of the pop moments of the year for serious - but really the first 3/4 or so is unfuckwithable. '2 of you' = this is the kind of easy, silly fun that xenomania try so hard (and fail) to make these days.

also impressed by how danja's proving himself to be a surprisingly flexible producer - he's able to tailor himself to his performers far better than i'd assumed he would be last year.

xp lol yeah it's fun picking out what track might be the "leader" (there isnt one really) and beholding how it subtly alters the weird world of the rest - something about 'tender green life' (including the vid!) brings this kinda like, idk, late alt-90s attitude to consumption of modernity, like it was some offbeat chick group with a dusty cd filed next to beck and money mark somewhere in ur parents attic

alternate perspective: when I listened to dawn's album i was utterly floored and found myself coming back to it dozens of times. When I listened to the dumblonde album it was very good and deserved further exploration but i didn't capsize.

Xp lol ya like "waiting on you" is my subjective favorite but in isolation it just sounds like (an admittedly strong) Prince via Daft Punk pastiche any number of artists have aimed for previously, in album context it becomes a partic brilliant facet of the overall jewel

i wasn't aware we were obliged to show our work? and your wet fart of a comment hardly compels me to make any effort to try to help direct you toward anything that brings me joy.
but as long as you feel like slinging shit around, your particular flights of fancy are more frilly and overblown but are hardly deeper investigations. "sonically corny"? "playing to a slavish and trite gallery"? "conceptually ponderous in a way that no longer washes"? "gloomily burdensome pseudopersonal narrative"? You're rendering judgements so far removed from actually hearing the music that all I get is that you don't care for the public facing facade.
in any case, squaring these albums off as either/or is a masturbatory task; who said you were obliged to only like one or the other in the first place. it's a bad look from over in the slavish and trite gallery.

DAWN and dumblonde are doing their thing here in Boston on a sunday!!

on THIS sunday i mean.

also this interview. i hate industry motherfuckers ESPECIALLY iovine who i’m sure was aching to replace one of the ddm
women with his side piece la scherz

https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/music/a24477124/danity-kane-reunion/

O’Day: When I was doing Celebrity Apprentice, I was doing all these old fashioned looks. I have this amazing hairstylist and he would do all of these classic looks on me in the boardroom and I remember maybe the fourth or fifth episode, two producers came over to me and said, "Aubrey, you're the youngest one we've had here. You're running circles around everyone. Nobody thought you'd do this well, but Trump thinks you're ugly."

What?
O’Day: "He's wanting to get rid of you. He wants to keep the dumb Miss Universe around because she's really pretty and she's hot and he thinks that we'll do better. She gets more ratings." They said, "You are beautiful though and we know that but you’ve got to stop doing like..."

And I'm like, Dude, these looks I'm pulling are classic. All these other bitches are showing up in Forever21 looking budget and I'm over here working with the best people, looking polished. They were like, "I know, but our audience is the NASCAR audience. They don't understand your looks. We're trying to help you. Part your hair down the middle, wear it straight, and wear a tight dress that pushes up your tits."

Richard: That's what they're told, and it's insane because you get it from every gambit. Jimmy Iovine told Kalenna [editor’s note: Kalenna Harper was a member of Dirty Money with Richard; the duo performed with Diddy as Diddy-Dirty Money] and I are to our face, he looked at Puff and said, "Why don't you have two light skinned girls?" In front of a boardroom of fifty people.

Bex: They treat you like you're just something, not someone.
