"I hope this is good! The bass in the chorus of "Me & U" is the best sound ever."

Er... Bass? And just when I've been remarking on it as yet another example of an excellent pop/r'n'b record that works despite the absence of bass! ;) It's suggestively empty, airy, and delicately balanced - with an incredible openness, like the r'n'b equivalent of a Zen rock garden. But all with no integrating bass, with the exception of the booming kick drum. Are there different versions / mixes about? Or am I just being obtuse in not acknowledging that synth-cello line in the chorus as 'bass'?

(The clip is most excellent, by the way. Just her dancing about in front of a mirror. Simplicity, perfection. With Cassie gratuitously dousing herself in a bottle of water somewhere towards the end ;) )

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I think I must mean the synth-cello - I've only seen the clip and heard it on the radio, and in those mediums that resonant low synth is like an evil techstep record.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:47 (seventeen years ago) link

It's precisely because there is no bass in the record otherwise that these bits work so effectively. Such creeping menace!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:54 (seventeen years ago) link

it's the same synth-cello beloved of scott storch in 50 cent productions and so on (where it's kind of used as this "hard gangsta" signifier), except with those it's seamlessly integrated into all these other shiny sounds, on 'me & u' there's virtually nothing else which amps up the dread even more.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:09 (seventeen years ago) link

This girl is all frosting, no cake.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the thought of the almost melisma-less Cassie as being 'cool', in contrast to the hotness and chaos that edge-of-ignition warbles like Beyonce's "Deja Vu" have. Whereas that style is delivered in count-down-to-blast-off mode, Cassie's vocals are just so icy and still.

The links with 'Move Your Body', 'Never Leave You' are OTM. I wonder what other songs belong in this chain/constellation?

BTW - she is frost-y, not frost-ing! Who wants cake, anyway? ;) Give me icing any day.

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:10 (seventeen years ago) link

yes it's the stillness which is so compelling - it's a real rarity in r&b.

cassie's total ice. the only vocal comparison which really fits is teairra mari, but teairra's icy cos she's angry, and she's definitely not blank or disinterested.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not disputing that she's doing something wildly different from everyone else and that's what everyone is finding intriguing about her; my only point is that, for me, a little bit goes a very very very VERY long way.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I like the second single even more.

The album's very short -- 35 mins, a la all those Carter Administration Def Jam albums, and no trace of Diddy -- and very top-heavy.

Luis Skank Bloc Polonia (Andy_K), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Tim: Do yourself a favor and listen on headphones/anything where you can get a good stereo effect. It becomes 10 times better. Each sound is isolated in its own little pocket, never interacting with anything else in the song. It's like piling on a couple more bagfulls of ice.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Every time I download it it's 20 minutes of skips and whistles :-(

I'm hoping to be given the CD single to review when it finally comes out here.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I like this song a lot, but then I've only heard it in the liquor store. Its playing literally every time I go shopping for beer. So maybe my reaction is pavlovian.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

This is way better than "Don cha"

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Could someone with a leaked / promo version of the LP post a tracklisting? Love everything I've got so far although "Just Friends" is my summer jam (a year old and all).

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes I agree with that. "Don't Cha" isn't even the best Pussycat Dolls single.

I think this is maybe the most severe psuedo-crunk R&B track - "Oh" is its only challenger, and I think this sounds even emptier than that, though "Oh" does have some raw blemished grunt in its favour.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

No I think I had some general problems with e-mail that day (this was about two/three weeks ago maybe?) - I will e-mail again.

Here's the proper tracklist:

Cassie-Cassie-(Retail)-2006-H3X

01. Me & U 3:12
02. Long Way 2 Go 3:40
03. About Time 3:33
04. Kiss Me 4:07
05. Call U Out 3:32
06. Just One Nite 4:06
07. Hope You're Behaving (Interlude) 0:36
08. Not With You 3:17
09. Ditto 3:34
10. What Do U Want 3:13
11. Miss Your Touch 2:33

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 4 August 2006 06:28 (seventeen years ago) link

'long way 2 go' is so good; she's so detached it's virtually spoken word.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 07:06 (seventeen years ago) link

that Do It To It song is a complete rip of Ciara's "Oh". i thought it was some Target commercial at first.

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 4 August 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

"Do It To It" is like the '00s version of "Land of a Thousand Dances." They're both pretty annoying.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I find it kind of intriguing to note that my three favourite songs this year are "In White Rooms", "Me & U" and "Silent Shout", which are united by a verging-on-severe chill formalism - total pop degree zero.

New Luomo album soon! I'm excited. Catherine did you like that Vladislav Delay remix of Rhythm & Sound's "Truly" on that comp I gave you. Delay and Luomo are the same person if you didn't already know.

(sorry everyone else, this is wandering off topic)

I can kind of picture Paul Buchanan's voice working over "Me & You"'s icy backdrop

gaseous (gaseous), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, no, his voice has too much presence..

gaseous (gaseous), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I may never understand what it is people like about this kind of flat disengagement.

I also may never understand how an artist or songwriter goes about deciding whether a song will be a "You" track or a "U" track. I really wish people would stop doing the latter.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Ur no fun.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:15 (seventeen years ago) link

"I can kind of picture Paul Buchanan's voice working over "Me & You"'s icy backdrop"

Surely it's only a matter of time before Junior Boys release a cover of "Me & U".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

"I also may never understand how an artist or songwriter goes about deciding whether a song will be a "You" track or a "U" track."

I think it gets sent to a special committee. It's tried out in various focus groups. And then they just pull one out of a hat and go with it.

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:23 (seventeen years ago) link

For those of you who are interested in such details, the real simple falling down blip line in "Me & U" is in the clave rhythm.

This track is good - very good; stunning, in fact - but it doesn't move me as much as "Oh." Neither does Ciara's "Get Up" for that matter, though that's a good track too. My problem with each is that when the vocals coalesce into melody it's what I call "standard '00s r&b melody" (which I can't explain any better than that) (and "Get Up" does go into interesting pastorale moods, it's a fascinating song in a lot of ways, just doesn't make my heart disintegrate); and I'm just not a fan of "standard '00s r&b melody." I'll have to give more thought as to why. I think "Me & U" needs even more chill, and the tune even less melody.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:28 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a question: how near can you approach to complete stillness (or dead silence) and still be a pop record?

moriarty (moriarty), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:32 (seventeen years ago) link

"is it you?" is one i've been thinking of recently, an avenue that was closed off too swiftly

four years pass...

Me & U is currently perched in the top 25 on iTunes U.S. ...it's also the most downloaded R&B track in the UK right now?!

all the way down, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:43 (six years ago) link

it's featured on the itunes front page in both countries. in the us it's listed on both the 'hot tracks' and '69¢ songs' sections, both of which are known to give sizeable boosts to both new and old songs.

presumably this is all part of bad boy's promo for its apple music-exclusive movie which has taken up all the banners on the front page. three other bad boy tracks are on the 'hot tracks' front page along w/ "me & u", and if you check you'll notice all of those are also high on the itunes charts now.

dyl, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link

thanks! I was quite shocked. still quite impressive, I wonder why they picked that of all the possible older Bad Boy tracks?! (and justice for Official Girl and Must Be Love!) but I mean clearly it worked and it's not like I'm denying it's a certified classic by now, I watched that Bad Boy doc and Cassie herself is only in it for a couple seconds though... a pretty good (mostly Diddy-centered) documentary by the way.

That...is so weird. On multiple levels, not the least of which being that it popped up on my iPod twice this week after not hearing it in years. It's a jam.

Duane Quarterdump (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

Oh hey never mind, I was thinking of the JoJo song because I'm an idiot (I think K-Ci and JoJo almost certainly figured into my confusion).

Duane Quarterdump (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 23:26 (six years ago) link

So weird...I was compiling songs for an assembly this week where kids who get certain awards parade around the gym to music and high-fives. I needed about 25 songs, half current stuff the kids like, half songs that the staff--okay, I--like. I included "Me & U" as sort of a bridge; sounds current but isn't. When I went onto the iTunes chart for other ideas, there it was. I felt psychic but was baffled. Is it sampled on something current?

I had totally forgotten about her (and her great album) but Spotify showed me she has just released a single and I found out she's actually released many over the last couple of years (like a EP worth of material).
After a first listen they all sound pretty good.
Whatever happened to her ? How come she still hasn't released a second album... 13 years after her debut ??
She's not yet in Gunsn'Roses / MBV territory but for a rnb/popstar that's a crazy long time !

This thread pretty much tells the story tbf - i.e. too many good tracks leaked; too many less good tracks selected as trailers for a potential new LP; found domestic bliss; soon to be a mother, I believe; music now just a hobby?

I just listened to the last 3 released cuts on Spotify. I see they are linked by similar cover art, so this may indeed become an EP or something more soon. All 3 songs are OK, but no better than the weakest of the late 2000's leaks. The latest, "Speaking Of" is probably the pick of the bunch.
