The first couple of American Heritage releases if you can still track them down. They aren't as spazzy but have this crazy, relentless, polyrhythmic riffing thing going.

Check out Olneyville Sound System. Not exactly so much a band that sounds like Lightning Bolt, but a band without which Lightning Bolt could never exist. OSS, you see, was one of the progenitors of the whole Providence "noise" scene.

OSS is (was?) great but I don't think they ever successfully captured their live sound in a recording.

I'd also recommend Astoveboat if you're looking for drum/bass rumbling noise things. IIRC they predated OSS.

Although for the record there aren't many bands that "sound like" Lightning Bolt. Which is the point.

Elephantitus Of The Night is great. If Lightning Bolt played rock songs.

i'll concede the resemblance may be kinda superficial (i haven't heard either recently), but i think it's fair to say if you like lightning bolt, you'd probably find guapo of interest.

All of which is over my head, but confirms they share an 'octave' pedal. Whatever that does....

I just went over to LB's homepage... I still can't seem to get excited about this band :/ The way the drumming constantly flops in/out of sync sorta bothers me in a amateur-but-not-good-amateur way.

downloading the duracell guy now :)

Olneyville Sound System were one of the best Providence bands ever, whatever the era. My favorite album of theirs is probably "On Safari," but they're all unique and have different things to recommend them. The free jazz OSS album, "Efforts in Freedumb," is also fantastic and shows them stretching away from the bludgeoning trash rock of earlier releases.

The Psychic Paramount (featuring 2 former Laddio Bolocko members), but they're even better than Lightning Bolt (whom I love).
