You know, the thing about her to me, is that she's just so in-your-face and confident. She's like "yeah, I happent to know how to sing really well and I'm just gonna belt it out and flatten all the competition, so get outta the way, ya'll!" and she's like totally on the dime, you know? She would make an amazing tap dancer on Broadway or something like that. More talented than Janet Jackson or Madonna, for sure.

I cannot believe I am only now discovering that I like some of her songs that I know, and that there are a bunch more that sound like they would be good.

"Sucker for Your Love" is great, but then I guess it's more a Rick James song.

Yeah, I thought she was the one you famously included in Stairway to Hell, but I've always been kind of scared to find out who she was (only to find that of course I already sort of know, at least by way of having heard some of her songs). Also I may have gotten her mixed up with some others with similar names. Anyway, belatedly discovering who did what or re-discovering completely forgotten old songs is fun in its own right.

This came out of deciding that Gloria Estefan's "1,2,3" (see current GE poll) reminded me of "Lovergirl" (except I had to search a little before finding the title), and then finding out who that was by, etc.

Her first five albums range from pretty good to great, and her recent comeback albums are no embarrassment. Don't hold back!

Yeah, Congo Square last year (especially the title track), was not bad at all, if still fairly spotty.

I agree with Chuck Eddy that her best albums are Emerald City, It Must Be Magic, and Lady T (though I haven't heard her post-1990 releases)

The posthumous album is freaking great.

100%! I love how she not only has that voice but you can actually hear in it her excitement and delight at what a unique and powerful instrument she has at her disposal.

Yeah, xxxxetcpost Congo Square is remarkable: first few tracks initially seemed like she was trying too hard to reassure herself, but then (this entry point and transition fit the backstory) she found her truth again through the music:"I've been through quite a few trials and tribulations over the last two years. I spent many of those hours in prayer and felt like God was putting his arms around me. I started thinking about the music I grew up on—how inspired it was. Each song I was coming up with began to sound like the style of some favorite artist of mine from the past... Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, Billie Holliday, the old Chicago soul of The Emotions and the new Chicago vibe of Kanye West... Ice Cube's bumpin' in the trunk vibe and of course, Rick James. It's all in there."

Somehow I slept on “Deja Vu” and “Now that I have you” being such epic jams. The extended live version of Deja Vu is good too, fleshing it out into some kind of prog-soul/post-disco world that she rarely recreated on studio records.

Is the 20+ minute live version of “Fire and Desire” w/ Rick James available anywhere in high quality audio? There’s a version on YouTube but the audio is only in one ear.
