I didn't get the impression it was a picture of Lady Sovereign (who I've seen a zillion pics of and you are right.)

For some reason I keep hearing like a Lady Sov/Soca crossover in my head.

i thought this article was just ok. it got a little "see jack run" in the middle, and the thing i love most about sf/j is his ability to write to a wider audience without necessarily falling back on that style.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

New Yorker fact-checking caught out?

Surely Dee, not Kano, is second MC on Destruction. Unless something changed for official release.

just saying, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

More grime being heard here = :-)

Kelefa's on the grime beat today too. March 14 -- the day grime broke. (Overlook the awful NYT head, plz.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

(or, the day grime broke to affluent college-educated liberals...which Damon Dash could tell you is a key demo, I'm sure)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Lady Sov would sound way better than Eve does on the new Gwen Stefani single.

Also DEMON/JUVIE would sound killer.

adam (adam), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a Grime Wave! (grime's pun potential is like Thai restaurant names!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The Kelefa thing coulda been called "Grime Time Live."

adam (adam), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah with so many puns to choose FROM why pick that AWFUL title!

When the song was over, Sovereign asked me if I thought grime would take off in America. Five months later, the answer is increasingly clear. “Pow,” a song by an m.c. called Lethal B, and grime’s biggest hit to date, has made its way to New York, where it is currently being played on Hot 97 by the influential d.j. Funkmaster Flex.
I actually dislike that graf for the very reason you dig it, Gregory. It isn't clear at all to me what the writer is attempting to convey.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

That paragraph (mark me on the likey side) seems to be saying that this moment (Lethal B getting on HOT97) is going to be where the question will be answered. Right now, the question really can't be answered (unless you wanna dip into spurious prognosticating).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

check the video fr lethal b's "forward (pow)" too!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

saying it's by "an MC called Lethal B" kinda misses the point of the song a lot

she's not that fit

I dunno about that. Check the pic in today's Pitchfork profile:

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:16 (nineteen years ago) link

what does this mean? "other way round [sic] for once"

sic? whats wrong with that?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

The "Pow" video is great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I think they are imagining that "around" is the proper word in this instance.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Which it is, but the [sic] is unnecessary.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

dude... her on video is hillarious. i'm sold. even if she seems like a gilmore girl gone ghettofandango-a-go-go.

she just reminds me of somebody's little sister. chuckles.

Which video? The original "Random" or the "Random Remix" video (with a hilarious non-cameo by Riko.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:36 (nineteen years ago) link

both are great in totally different ways. on the non-remix, with the tiny video screen she looks like a grimed out version of my wife 10ish years ago. that's who she reminded me of. oh boy.
