does "dirty south" count?

not really, i guess.

'Shanghai Club Scene' sounds like either a current indie pop band from Vancouver or some obscure early 80s UK new wave group.

"Sleaze" is definitely a better descriptor than grime or grunge or funk.

two years pass...

so is someone going to admit this was a justblaze/poison level joke

deej, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

shit is fake.

and i fucking hate shanghai more than any place on earth.

dylannn, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Friend of mine works there. What's it like, then?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

crowded, lots of asians

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not even crowded!

you have to hold a flag for one traffic light cycle if you cross a crosswalk when the no walk light is on.

the food is shit. xiao long bao are full of pork flavored mountain dew.

it's expensive and relentlessly airconditioned and a hollow shell compared to singapore, tokyo, beijing, on and on.

no one can speak mandarin.

i could make like a 100 point list.

bald withered from coke israeli dudes trying out guidebook chinese on the semi-hookers of xiantiandi, biting australian english teacher girls, complaining in the lineup of the suzhou taco bell.

sleaze

brimstead, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

unhelpful post but basically, first the ten year ago trip i was having a bit of a personal crisis and that colored my impression of the city. i don't think there was ever a taco bell in suzhou. again, like i have to always say with these huge cities in china: if you haven't been there within five years, the recommendations aren't valid probably, and it's a huge sprawling city so it's hard to explain it in a few suggested spots. basically, i dunno, if you've never been there before, tourist shit like the bund and nanjing road, french concession, but go somewhere less touristy and eat random things, get some shanghainese food but know that it's probably not from a legit spot and shanghainese would tear you apart but whatever xiaolongbao is xiaolongbao and you're eating it in shanghai-- best case scenario try to make the acquaintance of someone that can take you to legit spots.
