So is Dykehouse covering Wire, or covering MBV covering Wire...

Best Wire song ever.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:23 (nineteen years ago) link

My iPod spit me "Silk Skin Paws" yesterday and it made me very happy. I like when Wire went all New Order-y. Didn't like it so much when they went all Wir-y not long after.

just call it "Map Ref" .. kinda like calling Echo & The Bunnymen just plain 'Echo'.. (someone start a thread about band nicknames.)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:39 (nineteen years ago) link

That's Mister Echo to you.

briania (briania), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Was this a very, very prescient dig at Slipknot?

five years pass...

I like the way this song makes you wait something like 6 verses before they announce the chorus...

dog latin, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:21 (fourteen years ago) link

the My Bloody Valentine version of this still utterly kicks it

Karen Tregaskin, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:24 (fourteen years ago) link

And they do! / he does!

(announce it, I mean)

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:25 (fourteen years ago) link

MBV totally phoned it in

...and it's still one of the best things they ever did

Cosmic Ugg (S-), Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:08 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^this.

Roz, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:28 (fourteen years ago) link

'i should have known better' is the one for me, probably in my top 5 songs

a. cole, u thic (acoleuthic), Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

whilst thinking about Eno's "The True Wheel" (because it won the Tiger Mountain poll) I suddenly felt there was some slight sonic link between it and "Map Ref", maybe the way it begins (sound?) or tempo or some of the chords - haven't compared them on a back to back play yet. then I noticed a link between another pair of Wire and Eno songs (but can't remember which two!). sorry, vague I know.

re: "I Should Have Known Better"
could the idea of a steady intro pulse have come from Metro's (album-opener) "Criminal World"? Mike Thorne produced Metro's (post- Duncan Browne) follow-up album close to the time of 154.

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting

ILX Blob 59 (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:24 (fourteen years ago) link

y'know Simon Reynolds has a pre-Wire Newman and Eno in the same car ...

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't give Simon Reynolds any credit for unearthing that one

ILX Blob 59 (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm sure that was in that Wire book that was out years ago

ILX Blob 59 (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

People wanting more late 70's style Wire pop should check out 'Perspex Icon' off Object 57

Cosmic Ugg (S-), Friday, 4 December 2009 02:31 (fourteen years ago) link

seven years pass...

I'm in Ireland just now, Killarney (none more Irish etc), I go into a pub, of course, buy a pint, sit down and this comes blasting out over the jukebox. Heaven, I tell you.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Saturday, 17 June 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

My definition too, if I ever get that lucky. (In a car gets you there too.)
