I guess if I still had a copy of Million Dollar Movie I could look that other story up, but it's actually pretty hard to find a needle in that particular haystack.

I watched a bit of FHTE in her honor last night. Everyone rightly talks about her roll in the surf with Burt, but she's got a couple of acerbic exchanges with her cuckolded husbands that suggested she could have had an All About Eve in her.

I think in my youth I must have seen about a million bad parodies of that surf scene, on everything from Carol Burnett to Sha Na Na.

(Note: I just made up those two examples)

Pretty sure there was one in one of the Shrek movies as well.

Anyway on the way home last night I finally went and bought a copy of Black Narcissus. I was going to go on the "Paler Shade" thread and make a joke about Black Narcissus having a low Sacha Frere Strongo score, and Black Orpheus having a high one, but I couldn't be bothered.

Night of the Iguana is so good, a certain kind of movie lover's dream mix (I wonder if Geoffrey O'Brien likes it?) of B-movie overripe dialogue and overaged stars with A-movie director Huston (although maybe he was on the rocks at the time?) and cinematographer Figueroa (although maybe Hollywood didn't care about him?). It's the kind of thing that might easily have ended up a half-baked mess, like a latter day Peter Bogdanovich project. Did Tennessee Williams really write the dialogue, was there no script doctor to punch it up?

I don't know if it's her best role or most typical, but DK is very good in this in many ways: her initial jittery portrayal of somebody way down on her luck, dependent on the kindness of strangers or suckers, her catfight shadow-boxing with Ava Gardner, her sympathetic ear for Richard Burton, her later show of strength. I think I'm going to look in the Lee Server Ava Gardner bio to see what he has to say about the production.

Of course, Ava G is good too in what could have ended up being the Ruth Gordon part.

The 97 year old grandfather is even more wrinkled than David Johansen.

I'd forgotten she was married to Peter Viertel -- who has now died.

Kael thought The Sundowners might be her "richest" performance -- she's certainly the best reason to watch it, given the longing frustrations and the sparring with sheep-driving husband Mitchum, but the whole thing is at the midpoint between Hawks and a Disney family movie. With many many sheep, and Glynis Johns having a (mercifully offscreen) affair with Peter Ustinov.

I always liked it despite being about 20 mins too long; it was a PBS standard in the '80s. Mitchum is certainly the best onscreen partner she ever had, and she's rather lusty.

Possibly more sexual chemistry with Bob when she was a nun in Heaven Knows, Mr Allison.

Watched Colonel Blimp. What a great film. Like, really
