and how does "the ikea of pan-asian restaurants" not sound like it would be a popular after work spot for twentysomething World Bank employees?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i guess you are right. see also: leftbank on 18th street for that uncomfortable-looking ikea-like setting. i'm really loving this thread, i don't mean to seem snarky in my negativity.

maybe you should campaign for a dc fap at uni's $1 sushi happy hour and give cafe asia a run for its money.

carly (carly), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't get this thread's title. Does this mean I'm not allowed to post here anymore?

Ya'll have been giving the lawyers a hard time, but where is the hate for the FEDS? Tombot, I know you suffer the fed pain, so bring ont the HATE!

quincie, Friday, 14 October 2005 15:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Seriously. It takes very little imagination to hate on us (law students/lawyers/law folk). We're not the nicest of people, we tend to be stubborn and argumentative, and we always think that our way of saying or doing something is better than yours. A WEALTH of material.

Having never worked with the Federal Government, I have no grounds from which to make a jibe thereupon.

DC trivia - After the US Government, who is the biggest landowner in DC?

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

it may not take much imagination to hate on you, but to articulate it without being immediately shutdown by your superior rhetorical tools? that's a talent. the federal government on the other hand...

is it a university?

It's GW, isn't it?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:55 (eighteen years ago) link

totally.

Re packed mediocre places, I just assume the drones are all attracted to any aggregation of those stripey shirts. Just hang a few up on mannequins, charge $14 for a corn-syrup cocktail, and start printing money.

The long-haul feds don't bug me as much as the short-term profiteers, who're much more likely to be found screaming orders at my bartender and mistaking themselves for interesting people.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I thot Queen Elizabeth owned most of America. Her or the Carlyle Group.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:10 (eighteen years ago) link

On mediocre packed places - shit, if the kind of people I don't want to run into are all conveniently clustered in a place I don't want to hang out, then I have zero problem with that whatsoever. It just means more available tables where I actually want to be.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

i found it frustrating that the places that were on the decent end of the mediocre spectrum became so packed as to be no longer decent, and during peak hours i couldn't really find many alternatives, or cost-equivalents without the crowds.

carly (carly), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:30 (eighteen years ago) link

It is indeed GW, the University that Ate Foggy Bottom (apologies to The City Paper).

Yeah, the striped shirt clowns are a whole other tangent that I choose not to deal with. Much like the popped-collar clowns. Tools. I actually tried on one of those blocky collar and cuff striped oxfords a few months ago, and I felt...dumber. Like my ability to express myself was being lost in the intersecting lines on my back.

Weekends in DC are best spent with a good sixer from someplace and watching movies/sports. Weeknights are the new weekends. Theres 2.5 as many of them!

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:38 (eighteen years ago) link

And Zack? X-post. So what if those places suck? I ain't wasting my time/money/effort getting there, being there or getting home.

You know my balcony's as enjoyable as any of those places, Z. Ten times as much.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

are you hitting on him?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

No. Zack and I share a purely platonic affection for each other. I just have a rather nice balcony. If by "balcony," I mean "lap".

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I feel like I have to complain as, while your bars may be crappy, I have to get on the damn METRO just to get to a BAR where I can SMOKE. Montgomery County = suxor.

I went to play pool at this awful place in downtown Silver Spring and could only stand like 20 minutes of it--how is one supposed to play pool without cigarettes?

adam (adam), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

is DC going to do away with smoking in bars anytime soon?

carly (carly), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I just moved to S. Spring actually - haven't really found any decent bars in the area, but also haven't really been looking.

And actually, it's looking more and more like the much-debated DC smoking ban is going to go through, so even the Metro will not save you. Sorry dude.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Dunno. The idea is constantly being kicked around, but I haven't heard anything definite. I really don't have a good feel for who is a mover and/or shaker in DC-proper issues like this, so I really couldn't say. There has not been much pub about it since Montgomery County did away with it.

One thing is for certain: VA will NEVER ban smoking in bars. Phillip Morris swings a big stick in the Old Dominion.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Or maybe Zack reads something other than law books. So, you should take his word on it.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't heard anything to the effect on the smoking ban? I know it did seem that way, about 6 mos ago, but I haven't heard about it since.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:01 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway if y'all wanna do anything in Rosslyn this weekend, like invade Cafe Asia or some shit, lemme know. I'm bored outta my frigging skull there. OTM about the staying in being the new going out on weekends.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd bet smoking in DC bars probably has about another two years. The only way around that is if one of the great alternative incentive packages getting passed around makes it through, but I doubt that will happen.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I have to find the story, but I believe that some council opposition was recently cleared up. I will not be finding that story today, however, because it's time to go get my drink on. Later skaters.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

i remember hearing something a few months ago about a council member (carol schwartz?) had switched sides and that a dc smoking ban was imminent. then nothing. i don't smoke, so i don't really care. it would be nice to not stink after going out, though.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:33 (eighteen years ago) link

A no-smoking bill actually made it out of a Virginia senate subcommittee earlier this year but was handily defeated in the full senate vote. Still, quite a result. I can see Virginia proceeding in a county-by-county manner with Northern Virginia banning and the rest lighting up.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:37 (eighteen years ago) link

The north is screwy. Silver Spring's redeeming factor: SPACEBALLS at AFI tonite!

I'm over in Rosslyn. Right up the hill from the Metro. Do you ever go to Dremo's, Ally?

i am logan circle-ish

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 15 October 2005 02:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I was at Dremo's tonight. I didn't plan to be there, and then, there I was. I don't have a place to live yet. I may end up in Mount Pleasant..

Earlier this week I was so hyped about an open house for a place in Logan Circle and then dude forgot to send me the details, but I got the mass thank you message saying "sorry, we already picked someone," and then I was in a super shitty mood all evening. I hate this whole process, it feels like trying to win some weird popularity contest, and it's like people, I'm OK, I promise! I'm not that annoying! I'm just shy when meeting random strangers and trying to convince them they should let me live in their house!

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 15 October 2005 06:54 (eighteen years ago) link

The whole living situation in DC sucks ass right now. We got real lucky with the place we found, and that we've been able to hold on to it and its steady rent for three years now. A lot of my classmates are on their third apartments since school started in fall of '03. Ugh. And this is just RENTING. The whole buying thing? Well, luckily, I get to abstain from that conversation with "Well, I'm in school right now."

Shoot me a line if you're going up to Dremo's any time soon. I worked there this summer, and am in there all the time.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Saturday, 15 October 2005 12:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I live in Shaw, for my sins, and am currently posting from that big shiny new coffee joint at 14th & V. It's pretty weird--the owners' liberation-artspace vibe is clashing with the clientele, who seem to be Ellington kids using the place as their dorm cafeteria. Could become a Saint-Ex situation, in which an okay place is quickly taken over by 50% decent people, 50% total tools. 10-90 on weekends.

How's the cold turkey going? Quitting smoking for five days is pretty impressive, seriously.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Saturday, 15 October 2005 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I live in Takoma Park, in the section closer to Silver Spring, which the snootier Takoma Parkers like to call "the bad side." It's like living through "Pretty in Pink." But I think they may be right-- I did get robbed at gunpoint on my third day there.

ng-unit, Saturday, 15 October 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

the cold turkey is brutal... i am OK all day but as soon as i have a beer i need a cig. and of course it has to be nice out today, perfect for sitting outside and smoking. saint-ex wasn't toolified last time i was there but that was a year ago... now they're banning popped collars, right?

bored now (schmanktenputchka), Saturday, 15 October 2005 21:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Silver Spring = hardcore dangerous. Our new Ann Taylor Loft only sells Mad Max style leather vests and bandoliers.

adam (adam), Sunday, 16 October 2005 01:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha ha ha. The political bumper stickers on every car in Takoma must ward off the bad ju-ju coming from that direction.

ng-unit, Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that place on 14th and V the new politcal utopian place (I forget the name?). Politics and Anglers? Poets and Sandinistas?

I met a friend today at Cafe Bonaparte in G'town. Yummy crepes. Also walked past the C&O canal, around the waterfront park and up Book Hill to the G'town library, which is unfortunately, not open on Sundays.

Dropped some $$ at Urban Outfitters on a green le Tigre track jacket that I soo did not need. but, pretty pink tiger. Went into H&M but the few basic black velvet and black corduroy jackets only available in plus and minus sizes. Was hearkened by the sight of the Lacoste store but not cheered by the merch within. Tried on the navy-blue "boy blazer" at J, Crew, but so not worth the money and the duds at Zara left me cold. The military brigade seems to have ususped the peasants. Found a nice argyle sweater at Commander Salamander but already have the cardigan in a different color scheme.

Tried to go to see Tony Takatani at the E, but couldn't find parking, got confused, gave up and came home. Maybe tomorrow. Must see.

Kiki & Herb are coming!!

ng-unit, Monday, 17 October 2005 01:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I asked my mom if she would like to go to their show. She looked at their picture in the newspaper, and said, "Gross! Why would I want to see that? ( . . . ) "Are they in drag or something?!"

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 October 2005 01:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Busboys and Poets, isn't it? The name is off putting to me but in fairness I haven't seen it so I don't know a thing really. Didn't make it over to U Street this visit (I am out of town again, hopefully back soon and having an actual place to live instead of house sitting/crashing on friend's couch etc).

H&M at Tyson's Corner had a few awesome tops, navy blue w/knotted detail at the neckline, fantastic. Didn't have any cash though. In fact I was returning a $8 top to get cash for the drive out of the city because I was running so short. oops! Almost bought a totally preppy navy wool fitted blazer with gold buttons from teh Goodwill a few weeks ago, but at the last minute put it back because the sleeves a touch too short (as usual).

Searching for a place to live completely sucks. Maybe I should try to find guy housemates. Whenever I go to see a place and the potential housemate is a girl, I don't know, I either get the smug competitive vibe or the passive aggressive "I don't like you for no reason" vibe. The other day I called up this dude from a Craigslist ad who had a nice sounding place off Connecticut and after I politely ask if the room was still available, he's like (sarcasm) "No, I just really wanted to talk to a bunch of random strangers so I thought I'd post an ad." Hey, excuse you, asshole!

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 17 October 2005 01:24 (eighteen years ago) link

That's the name. I looked at their website and realize they are names after Langston Hughes and am chastined.

Really wanting a preppy navy school-style blazer, so bad I walked into American Eagle today bc I had a strange feeling that I had seen such a garment in one of the various American Teen mags. I only walked a few steps in, didn't see it, realized I'd have to go upstairs, looked at the doorman and walked out again.

I've also seen one from Brooks Brothers which is cheaper than the J Crew one, but not by much, and if the J Crew one had fittedness problems, was a bit boxy, I imagine the BB one would be a lot worse.

Good luck, D. I hope something comes through.

I tried on these Free People plaid pleated and cuffed trousers today, but the zipper was so short--it was very strange, like half the size of the a regular zipper. They were like fake pants or something.

Went through the G'town flea market also, slim pickens but it was a beautiful day.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 October 2005 01:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been hunting for one too, that one I did find was pretty excellent (I think this was the Goodwill in Alexandria on.. is it Rt 7?) but the sleeves.. well, in retrospect I should've bought it. Did you think of trying the boys section, maybe Gap or a department store? It didn't fit in the shoulders sadly, but another great navy jacket I found at a Goodwill and put back was Dior boys, on me it had 3/4 sleeves but that looked OK, somehow.

I was out in Fairfax County for a couple days at a temp job and someone ripped the Maryland Democrats sticker off my car. Now I have to find the spare & see if I still have that extra Kerry for President sticker to put next to it. thanks, Virginia.

From the Where Else But Washington Department: At the store this morning there was a guy wearing a tie-dyed shirt. Upon closer view, the shirt turned out to be overprinted in small white text, ending in something like "--Romans...." And of course he was wearing these with khaki trousers.

Not that I was in any position to play Fashion Police; at the hardware store I wasn't the only one wearing loafers with beige shorts.
