nice -- good voice on that (i'm not familiar with your work so i don't know whose voice it is, but it got me all emotional).

Andi I love the spooky space in your piece. It feels like a haunted attic.

aaaah pulling the trigger!!!

uptown churl, Friday, 28 December 2007 13:14 (sixteen years ago) link

sounds good!

the songs could maybe use some more development in the drums though? it makes them seem kind of static.

Jordan, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah we were at the point of pulling our hair out and just wanting to be *done* with those particular demos so programming took a back seat near the end there. i totally agree that that drums probably need to be redone from scratch on all those tunes

uptown churl, Friday, 28 December 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Margins = fantastic. I can't work out if the production is terrible or awesome, in a Russian Futurists kind of way. Any chance I could remix "Never Too Late". It gives me all kinds of ideas.

Lynskey, Friday, 28 December 2007 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey, it's Lynskey

Hurting 2, Saturday, 29 December 2007 05:11 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks so much lynskey! (although i have to ask, what elements sway you towards 'terrible'? we are always looking for ways to make our music a little less terrible.) you are absolutely welcome and encouraged to remix it; what would you need to do so? the multitrack, or just an mp3? i think you can download an mp3 from the myspace; if not, or that's not what you need, just send a message on our site. thanks again!

uptown churl, Saturday, 29 December 2007 11:48 (sixteen years ago) link

EQ is boxy, the attributes of any reverb used seem to be pretty random, separation is woeful, vocals sound like the singer is trying to hide under a table in case anyone notices who he is, the dynamics suck, the distorted guitar sound has about as much prescence as an anemic ghost, that keyboard bass sound needs throwing down the nearest volcano, where's your snares at? . . . .

HOWEVER there's several serendipitous moments where it just seems to work really well, which is probably down to the strength of the ideas present more than anything. If you could send me the bits (and please send the vocals without verb) that'd be awesome. My emails in my profile.

Lynskey, Saturday, 29 December 2007 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Do you still have a myspace page or something Lynskey? I really dug the stuff you put up here a while back.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 29 December 2007 16:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a Myspace but there's something so inspidly sinster, useless and naff about the whole thing that I got rid of it. Plus some theiving hippy (cunt still has my speaker stand) was plastering it with flyers for his godforsaken acoustic night.

last as in "we won't be making any more"?

Jordan, Friday, 25 January 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh we'll make more, but the Pro Tools learning curve slowed us up quite a bit. You know how it goes.

Lynskey, where can I hear your music now?

A short instrumental demo I just laid down. Kind of David Axelrodish:

Surmounter, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Sounds good, Hurting. The reverbed-out cymbals are awesome.

Jordan, Monday, 4 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

thx. I was pretty surprised at how decent I could get the Garage Band synths to sound, especially the drums.

I wound up changing the mix a bit - I think the repeated piano pattern gets a little harsh so I pulled it down a little. I may turn it into a multi-part proggy suite I think. It's my first effort toward that RPM challenge thing.

Hurting 2, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Are the drums live or Garage Band?

Jordan, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

i really just love GarageBand, and it surprises me

Surmounter, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Drums are GarageBand, inputted with a keyboard (as in piano keyboard) interface

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 01:27 (sixteen years ago) link

everything is garage band

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 01:35 (sixteen years ago) link

everything.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 02:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I see, it was only the dynamics that made me think they might be live.

Dan I, Hurting - I've put a load of stuff up on my ftp here -

http://www.bilblio.nildram.co.uk/PORL/Lynskey/

Lynskey, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Surmounter--that's a cool sound! Did you sample the voice or the strings or is everything from scratch?

Jubalique die Zitronen, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

it's really just from scratch! scratch being anything and everything u can futz with in GarageBand :-)

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 February 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link

surmounter, that's pretty awesome, must say.

So wait, did you record your own voice and mess with it?

I recorded a cover of Engine by Neutral Milk Hotel today.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Thursday, 14 February 2008 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

mostly finished mix of one of the songs that will be on our album. we're still in the mixing process, which is the part i hate the most. basic guitar/bass tracks were recorded live w/ 2 drummers, vocals/gtr overdubs added later

^^sounds pretty cool once all the drum parts come in

Jordan, Thursday, 14 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Sounds like a great recording, 6335. I wouldn't stress too much over the mixing. You've got good tracks, that's the most important thing.

And that was cool, m bison. I like the stereo hi-hats.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Friday, 15 February 2008 02:56 (sixteen years ago) link

My first (and so far only song):

http://www.myspace.com/stepdaughtersca

Heavy Pet Shop Boys/New Order influence.

Advice/criticism would be appreciated (pls don't be to harsh though, this was done entirely on midi with not very good quality sounds; I'm just starting).

daavid, Friday, 15 February 2008 06:08 (sixteen years ago) link

My next song will sound even more Pet Shop Boys.

daavid, Friday, 15 February 2008 06:09 (sixteen years ago) link

get rid of those claps or replace with tight synth sound! otherwise the song writing is good!

Crackle Box, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link

OK thanks, that makes sense.

daavid, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

i will listen when i get home! and i will be honest.

Surmounter, Friday, 15 February 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

WHERE ARE MY "MARGINS"???????

Lynskey, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm really into this song, david. it definitely sounds like it's influenced by New Order.

the synth/bass is completely great. the strings(?) feel right but could do with a little bit of variation. maybe u could blend them with a nice background synth in parts?

the percussion is fine, especially when you play with it, but the drums sound canned. but this might just be myspace sound.

the melody is really nice, and i like the epic feel of it, like it's taking its time until it gets to the chorus. but the vox should be clearer, and they should cut through the mix more. maybe with a phaser at times to vary up their position in the sound. i'd also just like to understand what you're singing better.

also, you could do with a little more oomph on the "i'm gonna be a star" line cuz it is one that can sound tired. i mean, i LIKE it, but at that point in the song, it feels like you could have a little more impact. i do think, though, that this could be achieved through singing the lyric a bit differently, if you're not up for altering the actual words.
