Awright. Here we go, then:

FRONT OF POSTCARD: A very dull section of the A2 heading towards Bexleyheath as seen through the rain-streaked window of a moribund Renault 18 at 07:45 AM.

BACK OF POSTCARD: The song is "State Trooper" from Springsteen's "Nebraska" (on D90 cassette, for what it's worth). It's an inclement November morning in 1998 and I am driving to work - my first teaching job. I am almost certainly over the legal limit having consumed a truly stupid and irresponsible amount of Kronenbourg (alone, in my local) the night before. I am followed/overtaken by police cars at five minute intervals throughout this wretched journey - sweating, shaking and pleading: "Mr State Trooper, please don't you stop me...". I was lucky, on that occasion.

FRONT OF POSTCARD: friend's entertainment center looming in a nearly pitch black room, the green letters of the DVD player clock throbbing & oozing like little green worms in the darkness

BACK OF POSTCARD: dust and chimes by six organs of admittance, which seemed to have been playing for all eternity, since the dawn of not-time, in the shadow of a fading awareness that i had once believed in the lie of time, believed that moments could somehow become into other moments, because that seemed to have been true somehow: some vestige of myself was desperately trying to pretend that this single frozen, unmoving instant had not in fact been the whole of human experience forever and ever and ever. and that was when i knew i had to run.

Here's hoping you ran far, Dystopian Society. A fine example of the kinda response I was hoping for, by the way. Cheers, pal.

Front: Picture-prefect, snow-capped Swiss mountain range, a bus (which I'm on) is speeding along a twisting road quite at a fairly high altitude.

Back: It's 1984. Take A Chance With Me by Roxy Music is playing on the stereo. I look out at the mountains and get all giddy and emotional.
