i seriously am tempted to do a "is this beat good or bad" poll because honestly to my ears that shit was drowned in wack juice and then sauteed in a wack marinade

steenage dream (some dude), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:05 (thirteen years ago) link

it's ~chill~

does a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ sh!t in the woods? (The Reverend), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

all this talk about chili and marinades is not helping my hunger, dudes

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the life under the scope beat

it sounds a bit different in that music vid though from the album track, like its mixed differently or something

ciderpress, Friday, 27 August 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

oh it doesn't sound like it the drums were mixed down in a cave on the album?

steenage dream (some dude), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

which probably means i need to hear more new stuff, but i haven't seen anyone repping hard for any albums/tapes this year except for this one and the big boi disc.

this is a problem

to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link

admittedly it hasn't been a huge year for rap tbh but both of these albums are pretty overrated & prob not in my top ten of the year. i think 2011 is going to be a great year for rap, though. a lot of cool shit sprouting these days

to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, Rick Ross and Shabazz Palaces are terrific too.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link

ppl have been repping for lots of (quite varied) stuff this year.

xxxp yeah, the drums are way undermixed (intentionally, i imagine) but it works imo. knocking hard is not that track's purpose

i think it's been a pretty good year for rap tbh

does a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ sh!t in the woods? (The Reverend), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah obv there's no one way all beats should sound, i'm just saying it sounds like garbage to me, the drums and the synths and everything. sounds like something i'd hear on a local mixtape and run to the skip button on.

steenage dream (some dude), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link

wuht i thought shabazz palaces was last year? they already got something out this year?

to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

samosa otm about both the big boi & pilot talk being overrated/not top ten/etc but both are fine and i think most ppl here if they started shitting on them it would be kind of disingenuous to do so

does a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ sh!t in the woods? (The Reverend), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

naw shabazz was last year but no one here was talking about it til this year

I think I saw the first review posted in January.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, late-breaking definitely, but i think it came out last summer

for me rap in 2010 is a handful of solid releases from mid-weight dudes (gucci, jeezy, z-ro & friends, ross) and some really promising debuts, and then cool subterranean internet rap nerd shit like lil b & odd future & young l bay slap. as much as i love that yelawolf tape i strongly believe the follow-up will surpass it, and it's going to be really interesting to follow him and like, roach gigz and and krit too. hopefully starlito, too. lots of fun to be had listening but most of my favourite releases are auspices of hope that some 10/10 world-defeating rap music is in the works

last thing i want to do is shit on big boi or currensy, just hope that people cast a bit of a wider net as barometer of rap in 2010. there are like seven enormous jams on sir luscious

to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Friday, 27 August 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

put me up on roach gigz. i am not up on him.

this is kind of a weird incubator year, if that makes sense. but that mostly tells me things are healthy, even a lot of good stuff is not right at the forefront.

does a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ sh!t in the woods? (The Reverend), Friday, 27 August 2010 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

or even in its most developed state. like, there's a lot of potential in the air right now.

and i love that.

xxxp thanks for throwing out all those names, i needed some new starting points i guess. been meaning to check out lil b ever since i noticed that lengthy thread about him.

admittedly it hasn't been a huge year for rap tbh

- samosa gabreel

o my ladies, o my gentlemen, let it be known that these are the words of a man whose response to any part of the 20-year career of e-40 is "no thanks".

o my fellow ilxors great and good, there is hardly then any need to put it to you that these are therefore the words of a man whose statements concerning rap cannot be trusted without the gravest of misconceptions ensuing.

idk man seems pretty good to me

k'naamean (zvookster), Saturday, 28 August 2010 00:55 (thirteen years ago) link

the e-40 is dope. probably my #1 rap album still

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the 'scope' beat its like 'everyday struggle' vibe w/ less hard drums

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i dig the "everyday struggle" beat -- the synths are a bit corny, but i don't see anything wrong with the beat as a whole

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

naw i love the synths -- they make the beat imo

also reminds me of

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 August 2010 02:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i love the production on this album (the live instruments are a great touch) but I still don't "get" curren$y completely... he's obviously a goo rapper but his delivery/voice is just soooooooo monotonous and boring. i feel like all of the people who've jacked his style (wayne, wiz, etc.) do "curren$y" better than curren$y does

― aborted based fetus (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, August 18, 2010 8:59 AM (1 week ago) Bookmark

this is kinda how I feel after two listens...it's like I wouldn't even mind if you went off on some backpack spaceshuttle out there type stuff but the tropes are so standard and he's got no swagger at all

(yes yes I know check the mixtapes out maybe I will, later)

dayo, Sunday, 29 August 2010 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link

wow the e-40 album is massive

love love the beat on 'over the stove'

ciderpress, Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:25 (thirteen years ago) link

that twinkly arpeggio makes the 'life under the scope' beat for me and it's mixed too low to hear or gone completely in the youtube/single version

ciderpress, Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

currensy is allll swagger
