"we need a resolution" vs "are you that somebody" vs "more than a woman"

max skim (k3vin k.), Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:10 (thirteen years ago) link

also tim otm! "it's whatever" might be my favorite aaliyah song. this poll is gonna be a good excuse to listen to some aaliyah tonight

max skim (k3vin k.), Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Timbo didn't produce "Come Back In One Piece," and nobody called "One In A Million" overrated iirc

some dude, Thursday, 26 August 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, yeah it was "Try Again" not "One In A Million" that you and lex referred to.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 August 2010 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

going to vote for "heartbroken" since no one else will and it deserves a vote.

I think "Try Again" was maybe slightly overrated at the time - mainly because lots of rock critic types (myself included) jumped onto Timbaland/Aaliyah between 1998 and 2000 and "Try Again" was the first new thing from them - but I get the impression its rep has receded slightly to a level more appropriate to its actual status as excellent but not best-thing-ever.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 August 2010 02:10 (thirteen years ago) link

iirc "acid squelches!!!"

Tough call between "More Than a Woman" and "We Need a Resolution"

'ello govna, Thursday, 26 August 2010 02:16 (thirteen years ago) link

instinct-voted "we need a resolution" but should have gone with "if your girl only knew" for being the first time timbo blew my mind

king boy swag (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:38 (thirteen years ago) link

"one in a million" is my standard answer, but tbh i don't think this is possible.

christopher dullan (Tape Store), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:55 (thirteen years ago) link

"try again" is brilliant because of the narrative and behind-the-game perspective she gives, not the ~acid squelches~

but yeah it tends to be the favourite of people who were disappointed that aaliyah had, like, ballads on it - you can't roll your eyes hard enough at them

idk, i think it might even win this due to the usual annoying silent-majority shit

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

i probably won't end up voting for it but <3 don't know what to tell ya

Not heard Heartbroken before. Nice.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 00:18 (thirteen years ago) link

okay just for the "silent majority" crack, I'm voting for "Try Again"

Squirrel! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 00:35 (thirteen years ago) link

is it okay if i love the acid squelches -- such a dope beat

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 00:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I would go for 'that somebody' but I have a problem with the baby noises.

no its aural baby noises

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i had that problem w/ it for like 10 years, so i understand even if i'm no longer actively annoyed by it. used to also hate "try again" for a long time.

bernard goony (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link

i still kind of hate "try again" but "hate" is too strong a word. don't really get why it's so loved tbh.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I mourn the loss of this gifted woman, her music means so much to me.

mo radalj, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

"Are You That Somebody?" no question

Gucci, ME (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:06 (thirteen years ago) link

"We Need a Resolution"

weird i dunno i was like 10 when this song came out but it was just the biggest thing, everyone liked it. even now i can't think of a legit criticism against it. nb it's not even in my top 3 or anything but it's still nice

max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

are you that somebody vs if your girl only knew.. i voted for the first one, but it's close!

also overlooked of her songs: loose rap. though timbaland didn't produce it, was written by static major. one of my favorites.

wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:33 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah loose rap is nice but if we're talking non-hits from the self-titled it's all about "it's whatever" - that song slays me no matter how many times i play it

max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:35 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp the singles from one in a million were my introduction to her and i loved those. i pretty much hated late-90s r&b production for a long time tho, always sounded very dry and cold compared to the mid-90s sound i grew up with and still wanted and those two aaliyah singles epitomized that. it's taken me until quite recently to come around to that era of r&b in general.

bernard goony (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:38 (thirteen years ago) link

some day you'll be abt 'more than a woman'

max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:42 (thirteen years ago) link

"Are You That Somebody" because I've never met another song that still possesses all its original power from when I first heard it, at age 8, to now.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 05:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Like most things are compromised in some way by time and overplay. But not that song.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 05:14 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh 'more than a woman' kinda sounded like zelda music when i first heard it :-/

think i'll vote "try again" just cuz i'm afraid it'll get overlooked vs. everything else. what a collection of songs, tho.

oops just read the thread, i didn't even know "try again" was the default. i figured that to be "are you that somebody" or something.

"if your girl only knew" only getting ONE vote is...surprising

"i care 4 u" so underrated ;_;

voted "Are You That Somebody?" because that was the one that really made me pay attention, but "If Your Girl Only Knew" was my second choice. Sad it only got one vote.
