"Are You That Somebody?"
― sisilafami, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link
I find the repeated chorus of "Erica Kane" kinda boring; it's like she ran out of song to sing.
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link
"Erika Kane" was an outtake originally, only released post-humously because it constituted "new" material at that point.
I wouldn't describe myself as a casual fan but for me it's between "One In A Million" and "We Need A Resolution" - if these are "overrated" it's for very good reason.
Of the songs listed:
1. One In A Million2. We Need A Resolution3. Are You That Somebody?4. I Care 4 U5. Sticking Chickens6. Final Warning7. Try Again
The song missing is "Come Back In One Piece", her awesome collabo with DMX.

Leaning towards Resolution.

1. One In A Million2. We Need A Resolution3. Are You That Somebody?4. I Care 4 U
IMO these 4 tower over everything else in her discography with the exceptions of "Never No More" and "It's Whatever".
Which is not to dismiss the excellent "Rock The Boat", "If Your Girl Only Knew" et. al. but with the above 4 when I'm listening to them any of them could be the finest song ever made. It's amazing Aaliyah produced so many songs in this category, really.

Timbo didn't produce "Come Back In One Piece," and nobody called "One In A Million" overrated iirc
― some dude, Thursday, 26 August 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link
Sorry, yeah it was "Try Again" not "One In A Million" that you and lex referred to.
― Tim F, Thursday, 26 August 2010 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link
going to vote for "heartbroken" since no one else will and it deserves a vote.

I think "Try Again" was maybe slightly overrated at the time - mainly because lots of rock critic types (myself included) jumped onto Timbaland/Aaliyah between 1998 and 2000 and "Try Again" was the first new thing from them - but I get the impression its rep has receded slightly to a level more appropriate to its actual status as excellent but not best-thing-ever.

iirc "acid squelches!!!"

― 'ello govna, Thursday, 26 August 2010 02:16 (thirteen years ago) link
instinct-voted "we need a resolution" but should have gone with "if your girl only knew" for being the first time timbo blew my mind
― king boy swag (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:38 (thirteen years ago) link
"one in a million" is my standard answer, but tbh i don't think this is possible.
― christopher dullan (Tape Store), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:55 (thirteen years ago) link
"try again" is brilliant because of the narrative and behind-the-game perspective she gives, not the ~acid squelches~
but yeah it tends to be the favourite of people who were disappointed that aaliyah had, like, ballads on it - you can't roll your eyes hard enough at them

i had that problem w/ it for like 10 years, so i understand even if i'm no longer actively annoyed by it. used to also hate "try again" for a long time.
― bernard goony (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link
i still kind of hate "try again" but "hate" is too strong a word. don't really get why it's so loved tbh.

weird i dunno i was like 10 when this song came out but it was just the biggest thing, everyone liked it. even now i can't think of a legit criticism against it. nb it's not even in my top 3 or anything but it's still nice
― max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link
are you that somebody vs if your girl only knew.. i voted for the first one, but it's close!
also overlooked of her songs: loose rap. though timbaland didn't produce it, was written by static major. one of my favorites.
― wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:33 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah loose rap is nice but if we're talking non-hits from the self-titled it's all about "it's whatever" - that song slays me no matter how many times i play it
― max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:35 (thirteen years ago) link
xxp the singles from one in a million were my introduction to her and i loved those. i pretty much hated late-90s r&b production for a long time tho, always sounded very dry and cold compared to the mid-90s sound i grew up with and still wanted and those two aaliyah singles epitomized that. it's taken me until quite recently to come around to that era of r&b in general.

"Are You That Somebody" because I've never met another song that still possesses all its original power from when I first heard it, at age 8, to now.
