yeah i'm listening to "I Care 4 U" right now and it's really moving. the run of posthumous singles in the year after she died was so great and so bittersweet.

Great poll! I wish I could put money on this, because I suspect "More Than a Woman" is going to come out on top.

Evan R, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

im thinkin TRY AGAIN for the "you dont wanna throw it all away" bridge

69, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i would take that bet, because in lists and polls that song always seems to get beat by "Resolution" or "Try Again" or the '90s hits (xpost)

Although not a Timbo production, my favorite Aaliyah moment is "Rock Da Boat," which is erotic in an otherworldly way.

i was just wondering whether someone was gong to bump a thread. rip babygirl. :(

So many great songs, I mean... fuck me. What a fucking asshole that pilot wassssssssssssssssssssss.

I'm thinking We Need a Resolution will win this unless people go for the obvious Try Again. All the songs could win for all I care, she's flawless.

I Care 4 U... sweetest, saddest thing I ever heard, and it gets my vote. Always chose it as my favorite Aaliyah tune, but it's not even about the songs is it. She could make me cry/scream/sweat performing any song, I think I wept when I watched her do the Christmas Song.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:00 (thirteen years ago) link

imo "We Need A Resolution" and "Try Again" are kinda overrated, not bad of course but i prefer pretty much all the other big singles to those 2

i think they're both incredible tracks but overrated vis-à-vis the rest of her catalogue, in that there's no reason why they should be predictable winners, but they always are - it's more that the rest of her songs are underrated by casual fans ;_;

how do you guys feel about "Erica Kane"? The only one of her singles that's below average.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Post-Aaliyah, Timbaland's productions never quite hit the spot like they used to.

fuck ya law! (Spinspin Sugah), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

"erica kane" is cool, i didn't know it was a single. i liked that she did this character study of this outlaw femme fatale anti-heroine, then i realised belatedly it was about (eri)COCAINE, do you see, which was a bit disappointing.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

"Are You That Somebody?"

sisilafami, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I find the repeated chorus of "Erica Kane" kinda boring; it's like she ran out of song to sing.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link

"Erika Kane" was an outtake originally, only released post-humously because it constituted "new" material at that point.

I wouldn't describe myself as a casual fan but for me it's between "One In A Million" and "We Need A Resolution" - if these are "overrated" it's for very good reason.

Of the songs listed:

1. One In A Million
2. We Need A Resolution
3. Are You That Somebody?
4. I Care 4 U
5. Sticking Chickens
6. Final Warning
7. Try Again

The song missing is "Come Back In One Piece", her awesome collabo with DMX.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Leaning towards Resolution.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

1. One In A Million
2. We Need A Resolution
3. Are You That Somebody?
4. I Care 4 U

IMO these 4 tower over everything else in her discography with the exceptions of "Never No More" and "It's Whatever".

Which is not to dismiss the excellent "Rock The Boat", "If Your Girl Only Knew" et. al. but with the above 4 when I'm listening to them any of them could be the finest song ever made. It's amazing Aaliyah produced so many songs in this category, really.

Timbo didn't produce "Come Back In One Piece," and nobody called "One In A Million" overrated iirc

I think "Try Again" was maybe slightly overrated at the time - mainly because lots of rock critic types (myself included) jumped onto Timbaland/Aaliyah between 1998 and 2000 and "Try Again" was the first new thing from them - but I get the impression its rep has receded slightly to a level more appropriate to its actual status as excellent but not best-thing-ever.

"one in a million" is my standard answer, but tbh i don't think this is possible.

christopher dullan (Tape Store), Thursday, 26 August 2010 04:55 (thirteen years ago) link

"try again" is brilliant because of the narrative and behind-the-game perspective she gives, not the ~acid squelches~

but yeah it tends to be the favourite of people who were disappointed that aaliyah had, like, ballads on it - you can't roll your eyes hard enough at them

remember hearing both OiaM and 4PL on hip-hop/R&B radio a lot

for the next throbbing minutes (corey), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

As many Hot 100 chart policies have been modified over the years, one rule always remained constant: songs were not eligible to enter the Hot 100 unless they were available to purchase as a single. However, on December 5, 1998 the Hot 100 changed from being a "singles" chart to a "songs" chart. During the 1990s, a growing trend in the music industry was to promote songs to radio without ever releasing them as singles. It was claimed by major record labels that singles were cannibalizing album sales, so they were slowly phased out.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:53 (thirteen years ago) link

ah, well that explains it

i was looking at the airplay numbers and seriously had no idea what was going on

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link

"one in a million" and "4 page letter" peaked at #7 and #59 on the airplay chart, respectively. "hot like fire" did not place on that chart.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:55 (thirteen years ago) link

how, if at all, would we view her albums differently if "i care 4 u" had made it onto "one in a million" as intended

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, 'One in a Million' would be significantly more awesome than it already is, but I think there would be enough left on the s/t for it to remain pretty damn good.

Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:54 (thirteen years ago) link

well then

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah what alex said, though i think "i care 4 u" would actually stick out a bit on OIAM and not in a good way - it seems to fit in with the s/t a lot more

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean the reason the s/t has more of a classic rep than OIAM isn't that OIAM isn't as good, at its best, it's cuz there's basically no filler or anything less than great on the s/t. also, my views are coloured by "try again" being on international copies of the s/t

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess this should go in the 'aaliyah' poll thread but i guess her label did a short 'documentary' (mostly just an interview) about the process of making the album & some of the songs
