or, as Lou Piniella famously opined, Rob Dibble doesn't deserve to be treated like a man.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 14:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Manager Lou Piniella of the Cincinnati Reds wrestled with relief pitcher Rob Dibble in the clubhouse at Riverfront Stadium Thursday night after a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves that only slowed the Braves' NL West title drive.

...

About a half-hour after Steve Foster got his first major-league save, Dibble plunged the Reds into another controversy.

Piniella said he used Foster, who got the last three outs, because Dibble complained of a tight shoulder the previous night.

"Dibble was not available," Piniella said. "He couldn't get loose when he got up last night."

When reporters questioned the reliever about his shoulder, he shot back: "There's nothing wrong with it."

Piniella heard of Dibble's denial through reporters, then left his office and charged the pitcher in the clubhouse. Several players separated them as Piniella called Dibble a liar.

When reporters were allowed to return to the clubhouse, Piniella had nothing more to say.

"You all saw it," Piniella said. "Write it."

ok so how did the first MRI miss a "significant tear"?

('_') (omar little), Friday, 27 August 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

the second one used the dye so they can see stuff better

call all destroyer, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i wonder if there was some damage previously when he was on the DL before and they missed it

('_') (omar little), Friday, 27 August 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

1st dl was for shoulder inflammation

call all destroyer, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yeah. anyway this sucks. i wasn't aware dusty baker was giving the nats advice on how to handle him.

('_') (omar little), Friday, 27 August 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

they've been absurdly conservative with him pitchcount-wise, there's no way that this is workload-related like prior probably was

ciderpress, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:56 (thirteen years ago) link

if anything, they were probably too conservative, like if your ace ends up conditioned to throw only 90 pitches per start then that's a problem in the future

ciderpress, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

(j/k)

i guess we'll see him again in 2012, then.

('_') (omar little), Friday, 27 August 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

dibble probably still thinks he should pitch through it

('_') (omar little), Friday, 27 August 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

nats could be good in like 2013 if harper comes out of the gate strong, otherwise they're gonna have to find some more talent somewhere. they drafted well this year so we'll see...

not workload related, mechanics related imo. throwing curves is hard on a dude's arm. every time I hear about somebody who's throwing some insanely fast can't-believe-it curve I assume he'll be needing surgery before long

it's not a big deal that stras needs tommy john. it will be a big deal if he can stay healthy for 3-4 years upon coming back.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:26 (thirteen years ago) link

eh, it's a little bit of a deal to be needing surgery that young imo. Tommy John had been pitching for eleven years when he got it.

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

true--i don't have data to back this up but i'm guessing they're more aggressive these days in just saying "go get it done." like maybe 10 years ago stras would've gone on the dl for a bit, come back, been less effective, and it just would have been a big waste of time.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

dudes in high school are getting tommy john surgery these days and coming out better than they were before but yeah it's not something anyone wants to go through

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

you'd have thought tommy john would have eased up on his workload when he was younger, how did he not see that surgery coming

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

"fuck if I keep this up they're going to have to invent a surgery for me, lol"

OTOH Nolan Ryan threw the biggest, fastest curve in baseball for like a hundred years. And still had the arm strength to beat the shit out of Robin Ventura.
