Tom D, if you've never listened to Sun Ra's Other Planes of There, it's quite interesting to listen to alongside Compulsion, because at times Gilmore sounds like he's playing alternate versions of the same material. Even some of the rhythmic ideas on Compulsion strike me as similar to what's on Other Planes of There. (Not making any claims about influences though.)

Alas, I was never able to really get into Andrew Hill, including Point of Departure, which I really wanted to like. Compulsion I enjoy to some extent, but not so much more Hill's playing and composition.

Innaresting. Have never really been able to get into "Point of Departure" either, but am really liking "Compulsion", did find myself thinking it reminded me of Sun Ra somewhat...

five years pass...

Black Fire/Smoke Stack/Judgement/Point Of Departure/Andrew!!!/Compulsion

There is definitely some of kind of unusual talent and drive present when someone can seemingly bang out 6 extraordinary masterworks like these in a mere 2 year period. M Coleman and Timi Yuru upthread from years ago are both absolutely otm.
