looks like the chicago keeper is a more worthy recipient of your hate

It wasn't his best night, but he's a rookie and it was only his 4th league appearance. Trust me, if it was the guy they started the season with it'd have been like 6-3 instead of 4-3.

CONCACAF Champions League play last night had some incredibly lolzy refereeing, including a Cbus goal being called back because a player was wearing a jersey w/ no number after going off for treatment for a bloody cut on his head.

From the official MLS blog:

MLS teams are now 0-19-2 in competitive matches in Mexico.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Good thing I hate Cbus.

lol, imo

Hey, just wanted to ask this -- the $40 buck premium internet all-access pass thing for MLS seems like an awesome deal. Anyone else have this thing and is it, indeed, awesome? (Well, as awesome as MLS can get, at least...)

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I've purchased it when they drop the price mid-year. It worked pretty well the past couple of seasons, but if I understand right it's gotten better this year, more of an ESPN3-style service with borderline-if-not-HD picture quality, etc. Plus you can watch archived games. The one drawback is that anything on a national broadcast, i.e. games on FSC, Telefutura, or ESPN, are not broadcast live. I think they are in the archive, though.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Well they don't show a lot of Toronto FC games on TV so I think I might get it then... Plus I'd get that mid-season price drop! Cool!

hi, here is the first--and it's gonna be the most indepth, how could it not be--rundown of the 2011 expansion draft, who might be available, protected, and exempt for portland and vancouver:

so are the playoffs over 2 legs or at a neutral venue?

Michael B, Sunday, 29 August 2010 10:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i notice steve nicol is managing the revs

Michael B, Sunday, 29 August 2010 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

playoffs are 2 legs for the first round, one game each round after (yes, it's stupid)

Danny Dyer (dan m), Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

wow, had no idea the pay in the mls was that lousy. can you even live in new york on a 40k salary?

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

suburban NJ maybe? still...

and yeah, the mls final is
in a neutral venue, toronto this year iirc. there's been talk of changing it to the home field
of the team with the best regular season record (or something)

156, Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

The salaries are public record, fyi. Not sure of the url but they put them on teh internets every so often. And the lowness of salaries is what results in players being roommates in deeply unimpressive apartments in New Jersey, or living in the basements of other, more successful/"big name" players.

You can totally live in NYC on a 40k salary but it would be an underwhelming life in which you had lots of roommates and/or didn't go out. Tights budgets are one thing, but when yr teammates are making more and can do shit, and your lifestyle is basically that of an under-paid editorial assistant, you have to wonder why yr training your ass off and going on national tv every week.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Sunday, 29 August 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

hey now many of us are/were living in nyc at around or below 40k and are whelmed constantly

i wonder what the avg. salary of NY Cosmos players was back in the heyday and what that would be in 2010 $$$

Max Armstrong (buzza), Monday, 30 August 2010 05:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Jack Mac's goal was nice, hope he can do that for the nats. What really amazed me from that game is Justin Mapp's play, he looked 10 times more involved than he ever did for the Fire this year.

And yeah, Montero is clutch. I can't believe he's still in the league and not gone to Spain/Germany/Italy or something. I wish he would. Also I wish the Fire's back line wasn't cobbled together from rookies and out-of-position players. :(

So this is kind of huge, adidas has re-upped with the league until 2018 for an assload of money. Sure, each team will continue to be in somewhat boring kits, but the return of the reserve league is huuuuuge.

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/blog/dirty-tackle/post/Philly-fans-mock-coach-s-DUI-with-99-Bottles-of?urn=sow-267985

Philadelphia sports fans have long been known as some of the harshest in the U.S. From throwing ice balls at a drunk Santa Claus to booing anything that moves, they can rarely be mistaken for library patrons and now, they're sharing their charms with MLS.

When the Kansas City Wizards visited the Union last Saturday, their coach, Peter Vermes, should have expected to hear a shout or two from the crowd about his recent drunk-driving arrest. The Union's Sons of Ben supporters club went a little beyond that, however, and sang "99 Bottles of Beer." The. Whole. Song.

From The 700 Level:

This consumed much of the first half, though there were interruptions for other game-action chants and one celebration. Then, right back to the bottles of beer. About midway through, some fans started holding up their keys, and soon everyone was doing it.

As you can hear in the video above, they modified the song to include the phrase "Peter Vermes, give us your keys" and ended with a chant of the popular billboard slogan "over the limit, under arrest."

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Nice to see Richards growing up in his play. Also, the Henry-to-Lindpere-to-Henry play was a ballet.
