this is weird but when doing the above ranking i had a hard time remembering what "ringtone rap" even was, as a distinct thing from snap music. like everything i'd think of would be snap stuff like yung joc, dem franchize boys, etc. is ringtone even a distinct period or set of hits in retrospect?

there's some overlap, def, but i think of stuff like "crank dat", "party like a rockstar", "pop lock and drop it", "this is why i'm hot", etc

there def is a youtube element to soulja tho -- obv the crank dat instruction video was a big thing, then there was his youtube channel which was pretty active for a time a little while ago, where he would do these 6 min freestyles when certain videos got a certain amount of views

i think Chamillionaire was the first rapper to sell a million ringtones (not counting old stuff like "Baby Got Back," anyway), but yeah "Ridin'" isn't really considered ringtone rap like "Crank Dat" is

when ppl say 'ringtone rap' tho theyre talking about the production, like there was this thing going around about how ay bay bay was 'made' for ringtones bcuz of the tinniness of the production
