There Are Some things You Can't Unsee [Mark Hemingway]

As if an entire blog dedicated to "an exploration of the graphics and graffiti in support of Barack Obama" wasn't unnecessary enough, the latest entry is a painting of a nude Obama riding a unicorn done by an artist who "who normally paints photos of people with pancakes on their heads." I'm sure the Committee for the Preservation of the White House will have a tough time deciding whether that will match the decor better in the Lincoln Sitting Room or the Treaty Room...

I had a half an hour explaining my Chase no Face painting on our mantle to my girl's parents over the holidays.

As goons suggested, be careful to dole out the obama action in limited amounts, lest you swamp the market and run out of ideas too quickly

Running out of ideas has never been a problem; just deciding which ones to develop. People are enthusiastic about the Obama unicorns, and I don't mind painting them, so I'll just continue until I get bored.

Dan Lacey, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Love the nice, big hi-res pix. Really helps get across the feel: paint handling, texture, etc. Armband is a nice touch. Does it have special properties, or is it just an armband? Plus horse coat is genius! All the Obama nudes are excellent, but I especially love the planecrash one from a couple days back. Geese in the engines, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Rushmore, ghost of windshield strut showing thru may be an error but it totally saves the composition. Looks freaking GREAT. Plus topical and so damn fast!

You should do at least one super-detailed Unicorn mounted Obama nude as a project piece, to commemorate of otherwise observe the moment. History will be glad you did.

I love yr paintings, Dan, but in truth, I love yr comics more.

Dr More BS (libcrypt), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 04:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd rather draw Faithmouse than paint. Maybe good things will happen for the cartoon as a result of all the publicity for the paintings.

Also, I agree-Obama's face looks a little too Jack Webby, so I'm giving him a repainting.

Dan Lacey, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Dan, are you going to keep faithmouse as a more-or-less single panel thing, or do you want to expand out to a full strip or even a full/mini comic?

If nothing else, I would submit some of your pop star/celeb caricature drawing work to Mad & Cracked, see what they say.

kingfish, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I submitted both the celeb toons and Faithmouse to Mad during the past few years. Cracked folded as a magazine, but I sent them cartoons online anyway. The way I see it, if I can get a fair price for the paintings it should buy time to draw more cartoons.

I'm still drawing both single panel toons and also trying to commit myself time-wise to the adult side of the feature-

Cracked's still out there as a site, tho.

They hired Jay Pinkerton, among others.

"Well, the more I thought about this just-plain-creepy stuff, the more upset I got about it. This is not really art; it’s just ego-indulgence on the part of the artist. Why in the world anyone would want to buy this is beyond me.
I’m going to watch Ebay carefully on this. If I don’t see any action by the end of the “Ugly Betty” auction (Friday afternoon), I’m going to saddle my horse, get my lance, and prepare to tilt at some windmills while I report this to the local authorities. (Whomever that may be; I’ll check into it tomorrow.)

Let’s put a little pressure on this dirtbag. Complain HERE, and complain often."

Wow, just wow at this fucking guy. What's his beef with you? Do you know him personally Dan? What an idiot.
