Wouldn't lock it though since a lot wont see it until they're back @ work on monday.

One big dif. between now and the MTV era, I suppose, is that a lot of these BM/DM/doom bands are underground by design. Like, they've gone out of their way not to court the mainstream, and some of them - like, say, Ulver - even seem to have taken steps to throw off their own fans every couple of albums.

That's no bad thing. Bands concentrating on making great music rather than pandering to the mainstream and making more accessible music for whatever fad is in place at the time. Look at Metallica, used to be great, now a joke.

Why does making music that a multitude of people might like equate to pandering?

Metal d00ds treat the music like it's a secret club. I honestly don't see what's fun at all about that.

I think bands like to experiment and metal bands don't have as many constraints --- they don't need to keep up selling platinum records to keep their contracts so they're more likely to go off and do something weird that their fans might not appreciate at first or ever, but I don't think its an attempt to remain inaccessible or something. Metal bands just have some weird ideas sometimes of what kind of music they think they should be making, sometimes it doesn't match up with fan expectations.

I don't think they're underground by design I just think there's not as big as a market for that kind of music. When bands expressly try and reach out to the billboard pop demographic they turn into disco-era Kiss and the the bloated corpse Metallica has become.

Ulver fans certainly didn't expect the direction they took and while they may have lost some fans, i think they kept their hardcore ones and possibly gained some new ones who were willing to check out the older BM albums. Some bands will make a more experimental album but because it's so good, it will still crossover to a new audience.
Some bands who make an accessible more mainstream album(s) will lose their hardcore fans, as the band has changed but, in their eyes, for the worse, losing what they liked about them. I would bet all those hair metal bands that jumped on the grunge bandwagon in the early 90s lost plenty of fans due to that. Motley Crue certainly suffered. Remember all those bands wearing flannel? lol No wonder their old fans deserted them in droves.

the original BM bands (1st and 2nd waves were) but dimmu borgir, cradle of filth , children of bodom and all these other BM/DM bands in their wake DO change their sound (and have a cartoon image) just to appeal to the more mainstream kids. Lowest common denominator stuff. This stuff is designed to be marketed to sell. Is it any wonder they are mocked by the actual scene?

Obviously intention is a factor then. I don't think Ulver's intention was to go with some kind of fad to get more attention from a wider audience, whereas that is the intention sometimes when bands change directions. I guess the idea of selling-out is really prevalent within metal and very minor things will get a band accused of "selling out."

But I honestly think most fans are fine with a band exploring new territories as long as the intention is clear they are just sort of progressing as a band or whatnot. Sometimes not so much though, like with Carcass. Swansong was seen by many as a sell-out album, but I have always seen it as the final result of their progression and growth as a band. I love their old normal grind stuff -- but if you look at their work you can tell that over time they were always getting sharper, catchier and a little less extreme. It wasn't a sell-out album, it was more of a final statement of the band as musicians.

I guess some people want a band to stay exactly the same and never change, but thats a really stupid expectation IMO.

I remember maiden being slagged off for always making the same album, bruce was bored of it too and quits. Then he comes back, the band casts off the shackles and make albums they WANT to make not what fans/record label wants and bingo, they get success.

I'm no expert on this at all, but hasn't there always been a sort of Tamizdat/Magnitizdat vibe to, say, Darkthrone, enhanced by the no-frills fidelity of the recordings? Does Darkthrone even tour? Do a lot of black metal bands tour?

By underground by design, I didn't mean "they fail to pursue the pop charts." I just mean they're very satisfied as cult acts. I mean, a band like Opeth doesn't sound like shit and tours all the time, too, and I'd hardly call them anything close to the mainstream. At the same time, Opeth does active promotion, and its album are meticulously recorded, so clearly they want at least a modicum of attention.

I'd argue after Symphonies Of Sickness that Carcass only got ever more mainstream. Heartwork is a DM album I think and barely Grind.

I definitely remember Carcass getting stick for Swansong. Entombed got abuse for an experimental album, which i forget the name of.

re: the undergroundy BM aspect - yeah that is totally legit and is a real concern for some of those dudes. not to bring up peste noire twice in one day, but hes kinda the poster child for this - only presses a limited number of cassettes, actively attempts to keep his stuff out of the digital realm and unavailable. its def a v weird anti-business vibe, and a little hard to wrap yer head around give the way music is v much a product oriented thing these days (not making a judgement there btw, just stating fact)

Varg is a terrible racist and a horrific disgusting human being, but I'm fascinated with BSDM like film critics are fascinated by Leni Riefenstahl or Birth of a Nation. It's incredibly striking, fascinating music and Varg is a really weird + bizarre figure. It could just be that my repulsion glands aren't functioning correctly, but it's really compelling shit imho.

Missed the top 20 as a result of spending all weekend engaging in the very fucking metal activity of canoeing in Herefordshire. It's been an interesting and unpredictable ride all round, lots and lots of new shit to check out. Many thanks to the organisers, Satan salutes you!

I'm a bit sad there wasn't more Death on the list. Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic are both immense.

The DM brigade isn't that large on ILM, and the genres 2 biggest fans on the metal threads didn't vote. But DM in general i feel did really well and did way better than expected. As did BM,Doom (the non hip crossover kind), Thrash, Grind etc.

I had worried that the usual canon bands would completely dominate along with ILM canon bands like the stooges and 90s alternative metal. But it was a great mix all-round.
