I guess what you want to focus on in the early game is 'developing' your pieces i.e. moving your pieces to square where they can have the maximum range of movement. obviously e4/d4/d5/e5 are the best squares to control. uhm beyond that chess is mostly pattern recognition

this is all some misguided idea that it will make me think about *interesting strategies* for *using space effectively*

in reality it is making me think of *interesting strategies* for *throwing my laptop out a window*

oh. I guess in chess using space 'effectively just means putting your pieces on squares where they have the greatest range of movement, like putting your knights in the center or fianchettoing your bishops or w/e
