rolling metal posters, rather. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

right, i did go to make & eat dinner. My eyes needed a break, before i left i saw bill making a joke about the results being made up. Now i come back to find johnny fever actually accusing us of making the results up. I'm disgusted with you johnny. Joking is one thing, but what you have done is over the score. It's just not on.

The results were tabulated by the program, the program will not make a mistake. I had to format the emails into a .csv file. then it was uploaded to needle, then glenn double checked this. Nothing was made up. Every single vote for tracks & albums came via email. NOTHING WAS MADE UP you got that? Glenn is busy at his actual job just now, but he will no doubt post on this later.
any mistakes that were made (kjb's tracks ballot) were by me, and i apologised to kjb. Billy Dods emails simply didn't arrive, he did not receive an automated reply to the 1st email like everyone else did.

Johnny, you have completely spoiled all the fun in this poll for me. as far as im concerned, its ruined. I will post the remaining results even though I really dont want to now. As stated way back at the beginning, needle will be opened up to the public, and you can see everything! We have nothing to hide.
My one regret is that I did not stipulate that everyone post their ilx username. Most emails did not have this (tho i guessed some from email addresses/usernames). But I assure you, NOTHING WAS MADE UP, these votes ALL came by email., many of them were by people who voted in previous ilm metal polls as i recognise the names/emails. Previous results of the polls are also on needle i think.

Now before I continue with the results, I would just like to say, that I'm not willing to run any more email polls. I wash my hands of them, i will not accept aspersions on my or my other co-runners integrity. I'm disgusted. If johnny fever or anyone else wishes to run the EOY poll, then please do so. But I do not want to have anything to do with it anymore.

Now on to album #10, which made it into the top 10 thanks to the last minute vote of J3ff. (he is a real person, Johnny).

i checked in and voted in the 2009 year end metal poll a few months ago and it was like an entirely different world. if this was an extension of that, i wouldn't be surprised at all. if the influence of rolling metal denizens has been underemphasized here, it would explain so many things.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

my #27!

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

(I only heard that album because my old boss loaned it to me; I was surprised at how much I liked it. Up until recently it was still on my work computer.)

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

'in the nightside eclipse' is maybe my favorite black metal album but i'm not sure i've ever heard this one ! gotta check it out

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I prefer this one to ...Nightside Eclipse too, don't think I voted for either though. Nice surprise to see it here anyhow.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

when i talk about rolling metal ppl not voting, im talking about smithy, skot, roxy who refuse to vote in polls. Anyone who reads that thread would know that's what i meant.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Nightside Eclipse is one of my faves too, don't remember if I voted for it - love Emperor.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

if they had voted, these bm & dm albums that have done oh so very well would probably all be in the top 10.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

yikes I had never read anything about Emperor before

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

The 4 most single-banded ballots had 8 albums by a single artist

so i dig the zep. wadyawant?

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not fit to comment as i didn't participate here, but pls don't take this so much to heart HGN. love yr dedication to polls like this, and you know, sometimes things get a little heated...

this is a good album. don't know about it being a #10 album of all time though. Wouldv'e rather seen A Blaze in the Northern Sky kick off the top ten if it was going to be BM.

i hate all polls except year end albums/trax (and even that is a total drag now) but i love pfunk's sincerity and that will never change

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

anthems to the welkin is pretty goddam great though

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Well jeez, if you'd just said at the outset that a lot of rolling metal posters voted in this, I a) would've known to expect a lot of things I don't recognize and b) wouldn't have been the least bit suspicious when things didn't make sense. But you were really unclear about it and I was left with the understanding that this consisted of ballots from regular ilmers. You see why thinking that and then seeing these results would be a little bizarro, right?

Anyway, now that I know what's what, I'm sorry.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

ugh I don't think I can really investigate black metal very deeply and continue to live with myself; I am not built for that

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:16 (thirteen years ago) link

xp: why the hell would regular ILXors, who mostly rally around either the Animal Collective axis or the dubious modern hip=hop axis, have anything to do with a metal poll

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

To answer EZ's question, if by "true to other polls" you mean 50,49,48...1, instead of 60,59,58...11, it would have made no difference in the top 5, and only a few minor place-switches in the top 20.

Restricting people to only one album per band would definitely change the results, but without knowing what people would have added to the end of their ballots in place of the disqualified albums, we can't really do that what-if correctly.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

you did. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

dan tbqh the best way to handle that is to get away from the original bands and find stuff you like from the rest of the genre. because as the years went on and black metal went worldwide things got less fucked up (in general, there are plenty of exceptions of course)

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Personally, i'd've had seven less things on my ballot

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:19 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp: yeah, and I don't like Animal Collective or most modern hip-hop!

Mostly I voted because I didn't vote in most of the other polls and thought it would be funny to vote in the one that appeals to me the least.

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks Glenn - I did mean the points per vote, and I'm glad it didn't change much.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Guys can we please discuss these results without the reactionary UGH BLACK METAL, UGH CLASSIC ROCK, UGH STOOGES, UGH DEATH METAL, UGH ANOTHER SLOUGH FEG ALBUM stuff?? I mean, there's plenty of stuff on here that I don't give two shits for, but I generally try to keep my complaining to a minimum and just speak up when I've got some championing to do. And I didn't even vote!

FWIW I have no beef with pfunkboy as I didn't receive a confirmation email, even when I sent it a second time. Pretty gutted that I couldn't make a (small) dent in the results, though I'm absoulutely sure they're a genuine reflection of ILX. They've opened my eyes to one of my blind spots, I obviously have some catching up to do.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Taking ilxor to heart, I did vote for the last Celtic Frost to place - Monotheist really surprised me, as they were always a band I respected more than liked. One of my favorite records of the last decade.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Johnny, apology accepted. rolling metal thread (and ilx in general) has shitloads of lurkers. In the thousands I believe. Its possible some voted, In every metal poll I've ran I think I've said lurkers are welcome. I have tried to make my polls inclusive, and not just to a select clique. I hope, by doing a 300, all genres have been covered, everyone will check out excellent albums that made the 300, and at least I now have the incentive to check out these 2nd wave of Norwegian BM albums that, as a total false metaller as i get called on the rolling metal thread, haven't really done.

Now lets just get on with the poll so we can roll out needle at the end.

yeah, i love emperor, but can't condone the zyklon b bullshit, or separate them from that. have basically stopped listening to "classic" BM due to my inability to deal w stuff like this.

dudes, even though i realized early on that BM/Doom would be exceptionally well represented here, even i didn't expect this kind of an onslaught. results for me = weird but interesting.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

It's what gets discussed on the rolling thread a lot. Most of these doom/bm/dm albums are in their respective canons. It's not like some obscure albums that only 3 people have heard made it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm really happy with the heavy rock/stoner/doom/Sabbath-disciple segment being well-represented. Don't care much for death metal or black metal. The classic stuff is admittedly a blind spot, so it's cool to see these albums place and check them out and then finally get into some new OLD bands (Maiden, Slayer, Venom, Danzig) and, of course, confirm my dislike for others.

Born Too Late was my #44, but at least I have some kind of relationship with an album in the top 10. Was beginning to worry I wouldn't.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I ended up ranking 2112 higher because "A Passage To Bangkok" > "Closer To The Heart", but sometimes "Cygnus X-1" is my favorite thing they ever recorded.
