hmm, that's odd, Rev says he still hasn't heard it.
xp

yahhh, I think I just forgot to check it out earlier... this is alright I guess, seems kinda repetitive
― launch me into spaaaaaaaaaaace (The Reverend), Friday, 14 November 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, if this had been on the album, it would've been my last-placer. But it's still pretty good.
― Eric H., Friday, 14 November 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link
honey underrated
― sofa king (deej), Friday, 14 November 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, it's a total jam... ends the album on a real keepin' it positive note

No votes for honey???
― ilxor, Thursday, 25 December 2008 17:31 (fifteen years ago) link
This album is so fucking great, btw.
I adore Honey, but I think that for whatever reason it feels like a separate entity from the album as a whole. It really is a bonus track, in the truest sense of the word. So when I'm picking a favourite track, or thinking about New AmErykah at all, Honey just doesn't figure in.

re-poll. how did the first track not get a vote?

Alternate versions of "Master Teacher"

'cause it's such a beatjack i'm guessing
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link
who cares if it's a beatjack? the reason it didn't get any votes is because it fundementally functions as an intro
― The Reverend, Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link
the part i love about that song the most is the dude in the background. makes me smile every time. the little girl at the end, too
― "made smashable" (k3vin k.), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm pretty sure that all those voices are Erykah's sped up or slowed down.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link
I wonder about that myself; I haven't heard the original Ayers track and had kind of assumed some of the voices had come from it, but maybe not.
― Matos W.K., Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:48 (fifteen years ago) link
Part 2 is apparently due Feb. 17--day before my birthday! 8-D
― Matos W.K., Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link
The backup voices ("Promise promise"..."Give you my eyes", etc) are on the original track, the rest is Badu being "THE MAN" and "THE LITTLE GIRL".

thx for the info

Part 2 is apparently due Feb. 17
This news just made my Christmas complete.
― Eric H., Thursday, 25 December 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link
I wouldn't hold my breath for that Feb 17th release, but here's hoping.... You can listen to her performing a snippet of the (reported) single "Jump in the Air... Stay There" here:
― descendent of warlocks (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 25 December 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link
huh i can't believe i didn't realise the reason part 2 never came out was b/c duhhh she got knocked up.
'honey' is positioned perfectly on the album, i adore it. "all i gotta do, is add a lil' lemon..."
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 December 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link
there should be an option for second-part-of-master-teacher. it deserves its own title.
― schlump, Thursday, 25 December 2008 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link
the Seiji remix of Honey is lovely.

I like the overdubs and the way it leads off the album--and the album it leads off. I'm not being that serious anyway.
― Matos W.K., Friday, 26 December 2008 05:42 (fifteen years ago) link
Man, The Healer and Soldier are still my favourites, but the brilliance of Telephone, which had previously been kind of impenetrable, has finally unfurled itself. Front half of the album is more immediate, but the back half may be more rewarding in the long term. Time will tell.
― the other Alex in MTL, in fact (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 26 December 2008 07:20 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm sure I voted for "The Cell," but part one of "Master Teacher" in standalone would've been a strong contender.
― Eric H., Friday, 26 December 2008 07:48 (fifteen years ago) link
I am blown away that Deej has never heard of a remix before! That is new information!
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 26 December 2008 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link
if i heard a remix that only added some pitch shifted talking over the top, i would be like "hey that's a pretty lame remix"
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 26 December 2008 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link
and yet this track ends up being really really great, so go figure
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 26 December 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link
Judging "Amerykahn Promise" against the original, as opposed to for it's function in the context of this album is a willful fool's errand.
― CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (The Reverend), Friday, 26 December 2008 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link
i know what you guys are saying here, i mean i like lil wayne's version of "shooter" way more than the robin thicke original, and that uses the original track in its entirety. but in this case it's not really an improvement imo, and i like the original better.
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 26 December 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link
And most of the rest of us on this thread disagree, and that is what makes this world a beautiful place.
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 26 December 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link
you guys are weirdos. the song isnt better as a throwaway intro track
― choom gangsta (deej), Friday, 26 December 2008 23:53 (fifteen years ago) link
i dont even like the ramp album that much and im kinda in the 'overrated' camp (i actually prefer that 12" that was just reissued this/last? year to pretty much any of the songs on the album) but she just jacked the song wholesale and stuck it at the front of her album w/ talking over it. its not a 'remix'
― choom gangsta (deej), Friday, 26 December 2008 23:54 (fifteen years ago) link
you know whats really great? that remix of the wildstyle theme at the beginning of illmatic ^__^
i hate the fact i have to sit through georgia annes shite to get through to the (infinitely better) second part of master teachers each time.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 5 January 2009 13:11 (fifteen years ago) link
Need to revisit the whole album--looking back it seems like I felt it was 2/3 fantastic, 1/3 filler, and just when it would get going perfect (like "The Healer,") it seems like it would meander greatly. . . and the RAMP cover would've been a stronger opening without all the talk over it. 'Mama's Gun' is certainly a top 5 or 10 album of the 2000s for me; seems like if there'd been no Part 1 and Part 2 for this, but just the strongest work from both, this album might have been top 10, too. As a loving tribute to J-D, though, it's beautiful even as is.
― Soundslike, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link
the ramp cover is not a cover, it is the ramp song.
― doggy1998: im only only 10 and i listen to music like this (stevie), Monday, 5 January 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago) link
ie without the talk over it, would've been another artist's cut from another album
also there is no filler on this album, to my ears, tho the mileage can and obviously does vary
― doggy1998: im only only 10 and i listen to music like this (stevie), Monday, 5 January 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link
also georgia anne ROCKS
I hate that I have to hit skip about 3-minutes into "Master Teacher." Oh well.
― Eric H., Monday, 5 January 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link
first part of master teacher VERSUS even better sly stone groove second part of master teacher would be a better poll.
does anyone hating the ramp track ever listen to those ghostface records where he pushes play and raps on top? how do you live with yourselves?
― schlump, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link
The second half of "Master Teacher" sounds a lot like an auto-accompaniment setting on this Casio I used to have. (NB: This is awesome.)

didn't she record some of the album on garageband, appara?
