herman already said on several occasions that the rolling metal thread people didn't take part, which, if they did, I wouldn't think these results were so strange. but if they're not voting, then who the hell are the people that gave us results like these?

were they shipped in from elsewhere? because if it's regular ilmers just voting in a metal poll on a whim, I'd expect a lot more "falseness".

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

no, this isn't about me being butthurt over hair metal's absence. i knew that was an uphill battle in the first place.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i would think there's at least SOME rolling metal thread people on here based on this results list. maybe there's an army of rolling metal lurkers...

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

really have no idea on the top 10, theres probably a bunch of classic-rock stuff that hasn't shown up yet (zep 4?) in there

opeth - still life or blackwater park ?
death - symbolic ?

Three more Sabbath albums to come - no idea what order they'll be in though, or what'll be #1.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I still think Zep IV is #1

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Speaking of false, I just switched to black.css and now I feel like it's that first day that I made my mom drive me to the mall to pick up Metallica's black album on cassette, but I haven't got it home to listen to it yet so I'm just sitting in the minivan hoping that this is gonna be AJFA II.

total satan attitude (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i voted for Filosofem simply cause it's the greatest BM album i've ever heard. full stop. doesn't mean i wanna have dinner with the creep.

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

(which coming from the dude who couldn't do simple math on the TV poll is actually kind of funny)

I was high on antihistamine.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

OK my guess for #1: Reign In Blood.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I think Gavin is OTM. Reign in Blood for #1.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

at any rate my point is "stop acting like a dick"

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

don't forget the black album.

ha, wolves, what a bunch of sissies (Ioannis), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

That was such a magical car ride.

total satan attitude (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Is Jane Doe gonna place in the top 10?

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

ummm, results of this whole thing look 100% ILX-legit, including skew towards classic rock in the top 100 and black metal in the closing stretch. don't see what the problem is.

Jane Doe was up this morning in the 20s, I think. xp

total satan attitude (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Any chance of a quick recap? Back to No.40 or so will be enough

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i was too young and un-discerning when i was first into metallica to even realize that the black album was a big step down in metal-ness. i dug it just as much as the others.

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, missed it. Ok, so watch Mellon-Collie + the Infinite Sadness be in the top 10. lol.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

That's awesome. I'm glad you did. Like, I'd rather somebody enjoy something than hate something, or ambivilantly grapple with something.

total satan attitude (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

what the hell is going on in here?

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

are people actually getting butthurt about the results of a poll in which less than 30 people voted?

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I never should've gotten my hands dirty with this poll in the first place. Maybe it's legit. Maybe I don't know fellow ilmers' tastes like I thought I did. Maybe I only know ten of the people who even voted in this poll. If that's the case, fine. But since we've never done an all-time metal/hard rock poll, I was assuming a lot of the people who voted in the decade and/or half-decade polls would've chimed in and that's not been the case really. I'm left wondering who these voters were.

Anyway, I'm shutting up now.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

In an internet poll with <100 random people, most of whom aren't even using their real names, what the hell would "validity" mean?

Also, hard to have much "vote-splitting" with 50 slots. The 4 most single-banded ballots had 8 albums by a single artist, so even those guys had 42 more votes to give. Nobody stuffed their top 5 with a single artist, or even just 2 artists, and only 4 voters had top 5s with just 3 artists.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i didn't vote in this one because i was away on vacation

i suspect there's a bit of poll fatigue around here lately though (and all those tournament polls certainly wouldn't be helping, if that's true)

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link

That's def true, and this came right after that huge 2005-2009 poll

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

johnny do you read rolling metal?

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

if you don't read rolling metal this poll isn't going to make a hell of a lot of sense

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Glenn -

is there an easy way to see what would have happened if the point allocation had stayed true to other polls? I'd be interested to see what difference that made.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Nope, but herman said a few times that rolling metal voters didn't have much of anything to do with this poll. THAT is why I think it's weird.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I wouldn't really trust things kerr says in general. (<3 kerr)

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

rolling metal posters, rather. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

right, i did go to make & eat dinner. My eyes needed a break, before i left i saw bill making a joke about the results being made up. Now i come back to find johnny fever actually accusing us of making the results up. I'm disgusted with you johnny. Joking is one thing, but what you have done is over the score. It's just not on.

The results were tabulated by the program, the program will not make a mistake. I had to format the emails into a .csv file. then it was uploaded to needle, then glenn double checked this. Nothing was made up. Every single vote for tracks & albums came via email. NOTHING WAS MADE UP you got that? Glenn is busy at his actual job just now, but he will no doubt post on this later.
any mistakes that were made (kjb's tracks ballot) were by me, and i apologised to kjb. Billy Dods emails simply didn't arrive, he did not receive an automated reply to the 1st email like everyone else did.

Johnny, you have completely spoiled all the fun in this poll for me. as far as im concerned, its ruined. I will post the remaining results even though I really dont want to now. As stated way back at the beginning, needle will be opened up to the public, and you can see everything! We have nothing to hide.
My one regret is that I did not stipulate that everyone post their ilx username. Most emails did not have this (tho i guessed some from email addresses/usernames). But I assure you, NOTHING WAS MADE UP, these votes ALL came by email., many of them were by people who voted in previous ilm metal polls as i recognise the names/emails. Previous results of the polls are also on needle i think.

Now before I continue with the results, I would just like to say, that I'm not willing to run any more email polls. I wash my hands of them, i will not accept aspersions on my or my other co-runners integrity. I'm disgusted. If johnny fever or anyone else wishes to run the EOY poll, then please do so. But I do not want to have anything to do with it anymore.

Now on to album #10, which made it into the top 10 thanks to the last minute vote of J3ff. (he is a real person, Johnny).

i checked in and voted in the 2009 year end metal poll a few months ago and it was like an entirely different world. if this was an extension of that, i wouldn't be surprised at all. if the influence of rolling metal denizens has been underemphasized here, it would explain so many things.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

my #27!

'in the nightside eclipse' is maybe my favorite black metal album but i'm not sure i've ever heard this one ! gotta check it out

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I prefer this one to ...Nightside Eclipse too, don't think I voted for either though. Nice surprise to see it here anyhow.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

when i talk about rolling metal ppl not voting, im talking about smithy, skot, roxy who refuse to vote in polls. Anyone who reads that thread would know that's what i meant.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Nightside Eclipse is one of my faves too, don't remember if I voted for it - love Emperor.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

if they had voted, these bm & dm albums that have done oh so very well would probably all be in the top 10.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

yikes I had never read anything about Emperor before

so i dig the zep. wadyawant?

i'm not fit to comment as i didn't participate here, but pls don't take this so much to heart HGN. love yr dedication to polls like this, and you know, sometimes things get a little heated...

this is a good album. don't know about it being a #10 album of all time though. Wouldv'e rather seen A Blaze in the Northern Sky kick off the top ten if it was going to be BM.

anthems to the welkin is pretty goddam great though

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Friday, 13 August 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Well jeez, if you'd just said at the outset that a lot of rolling metal posters voted in this, I a) would've known to expect a lot of things I don't recognize and b) wouldn't have been the least bit suspicious when things didn't make sense. But you were really unclear about it and I was left with the understanding that this consisted of ballots from regular ilmers. You see why thinking that and then seeing these results would be a little bizarro, right?

Anyway, now that I know what's what, I'm sorry.
