I know this Burzum album had 19 votes and two #1's, but we're not talking about it. Carry on.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

despite varg being a racist murdering nazi prick, that album is still genius.
Noone knew that at the time (well, they knew he was a prick)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh plz, Vince Neil (whom I really do think is a human turd) did not murder anyone with malice. He was driving drunk with a willing passenger. xps

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

norwegian metal dudes had to take it further though, always the same!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

So silly. Did a bunch of 12 year old geeks make up the voting in this poll?

The #1 album will be "No Sleep till Nerdville" by the Slough Feg/Darkthrone All Stars.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

johnny, think of the fun you will have when you do an "alternate alltime heavy rock/metal poll" with no albums from the top 300 allowed.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

(ps its not like i even care for most of these BM/DM albums that have placed)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i never saw the nominations list but i'd be kinda surprised if ghostreveries was the only opeth album in the top 300

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Did I miss it, or has Hvis Lyset Tar Oss not placed yet? Cause lol to the max if we're giving that asshole a #1 album in the ILX metal poll :P

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, nevermind -- I see it just placed at 13.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

This poll is an excellent argument in the doing away with of polls on ILM forever.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

This next album got pushed out of the top 10 at the last min by hair metal fan J3ff "girly metal" T

I can't wait to see the list of voters. I don't even care about their ballots...i just want to know who they were.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

again this is why metal is troublesome, people lionize shit like this and make rationalizations for it that are only really comparable to rationalizations made by people who really really dig super misogynistic hip-hop

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Kerr is always asking me to defend Burzum on ILX, so let me just say once and for all: Varg is a terrible racist and a horrific disgusting human being, but I'm fascinated with BSDM like film critics are fascinated by Leni Riefenstahl or Birth of a Nation. It's incredibly striking, fascinating music and Varg is a really weird + bizarre figure. It could just be that my repulsion glands aren't functioning correctly, but it's really compelling shit imho.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Can someone post a track from Filosofem for us?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

To be honest, can't really disagree with Mordy. Some individuals are unbelievably repulsive, but some of the music is unbelievably compelling.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Check the tracks poll results. I remember something from this album being in there. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I know what you mean. I have a hard time justifying it to myself when I listen to Wagner, but that's not very often. xp

Still, Wagner never iced a motherfucker.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Wagner was friends with Jewish composers IIRC -- his reputation as an uber-anti-semite is not deserved. Blame his nazi nephew or grandson or whatever.

Without warning, a wizard walks by. (Viceroy), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but it's not like I'm trying to justify to myself, "Oh, he's horrible but the music is so good," (which I have to do when I listen to Wagner too). It's more like, "Oh my god, he's so horrible and that's what is so freaking interesting here." Like his music is clearly coming from a demented brilliant mind. I don't separate it out from him personally.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

So, the top ten?

total satan attitude (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I was going to say, the whole thing with Wagner is complicated and not nearly as clear-cut as the appropriation of his music by the Nazis would lead you to believe; there's more evidence directly damning Orff than Wagner and even there info is contradictory and muddled.

Not all that much is contradictory, muddled or uncertain with Varg.

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^ HI DERE OTM as usual

didn't vote here but for ilxor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXu8M6q6v84

i struggle mightily w this cuz i dig some burzum as music, but can't even begin to condone any kind of support for the motherfucker (or for the motherfuckers that support the motherfucker)

a CRASBO is a "criminally related" ASBO (contenderizer), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

like, Wagner wrote an anti-Semetic essay while possibly having Jewish heritage and telling ppl that his closest friendship was with a Jewish dude namd Samuel Lehrs

it's all kind of a big fucked-up mess; a good chunk of what he was doing looks like pandering to get people to stop patronizing his rivals

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

It's definitely more the former for me - I think that's because the music doesn't seem particularly... expressive, if that's the right word? Especially the ambient instrumental bits. I'm still conflicted for sure but that's why I find it easier to appreciate the music.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 13 August 2010 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

xp yeah from what I've read his essay was half piss-taking, a quarter actual anti-semitism and a quarter trying to get his music sold at a time when Jewish composers were very popular.
