I have to mention a strange dream I had last night, which I just remembered:

Peter, I met you at your home just as it was being invaded by some terrorists/criminals/etc. Instead of fighting back or escaping, you decided to burn the house with the criminals and yourself still inside. The interesting part was that the house contained all the reels of your work, and you intended to die along with them. It sounds grim, I know, but I guess this thread here probably inspired the dream...

Sorry to all ILM posters who voted, but when Britney Spears is higher than High on Fire, Neil Young and Baroness, it just confirms my belief that the apocalypse is right around the corner. Or, alternatively, that polls like this suck real hard.

They call a dog "man's best friend." Not his wife or his children. Dogs give unconditional love and affection to people in a world where such things can be found in few if any other places. Neither wives nor children, no matter how much they try, do that.

It was a short step for any dog owner to go from those dogs to their own dogs.

And then and even shorter step to imagine, however quickly and involuntarily, those harms being visited on any dogs they've had in the past.

So, when Michael Vick was linked to an operation that did any number of cruel and deadly things to dogs in a systematic way, it was no large series of jumps for people to apply their feelings for their dogs to those dogs Michael Vick had.

Deluded? No. Emotionally driven, and therefore probably less-than-totally-logical? Probably.

But, as I own a dog, fuck Michael Vick. Guy's a fuckin asshole.

I reckon if you stop feeding them for a day or two that love gets real conditional real quick

ive found this kind of batshit paranoid misanthropy is usually lurking under the smile of like 1/5th of the "normal" people you meet.... i'll be like chit-chatting with some cuet receptionist and she busts out with "you cant trust anyone but yourself, of course - everyone just wants to take everything from you and leave you" uh wat

I can understand if people don't want kids, but no way are pets kid substitutes.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 15 June 2008 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

the fantastical shit people project on their kids is just as absurd - at least delusional pet owners arent creating the little weirdos of tomorrow

jhøshea, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Well yeah people are capable of projecting onto anything or anybody. I'm not saying parents are better than pet-owners, I'm saying the two things don't equate. Most kids eventually grow up to the point where they can talk about their feelings toward their parents - albeit not to their parents, sometimes, hehehe.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:08 (fifteen years ago) link

This whole "unconditional love, not like the deceiving neediness of spouses" thing is weird too. The more I think about it, the more I wonder what the fuck unconditional love would look like and why it'd be such a good thing to have. When you have a relationship with another human being I think the notion that if you behave like an asshole it will have consequences in their regard for you is good and necessary, really.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i love my cat and i'm sure she's attached to me in some way, being her only "roommate" for hte last 12 years or so but let's not go crazy here. as long as she's nice and does funny shit now and then we're cool. not gonna dress her up and sit her down at the dinner table any time soon.

I find the lyrics offensive, not because of the materialism that they represent, but because they put across such a tiny worldview. There's a whole world out there, but all that matters to the performers is jumping around in a dingy basement club dressed like an aerobics instructor wearing platinum and diamond jewellery that's so gaudy it looks like it's made of plastic. Or standing around trying to affect some kind of badass pimp/gangsta look when really the closest you've got to crime is shoplifting sweets from the newsagents when you were six. If you're going to wear a watch that costs $10,000, get one that doesn't look like it came free with eight tokens from a cornflakes packet. And putting metallised cardboard pie plates on your hubcaps does not make you look like Iceberg Slim.
