eh, there what, at least 5 Zep albums that are a lock for the top 100? i'm OK with that where it is, although it is a killer album.

Dude, where is markers, doesn't he like High on Fire?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

He's maybe checking Pitchfork to find out?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yikes. fightin' words. but yeah Surrounded By Thieves is awesome. Great goddamn band.

If Blessed Black Wings has the lowest rating, it's not for lack of trying -- that one has the best production, after all.

Thraft of Canann on Surrounded by Thieves may be the best thing they've ever done.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I misread that as "Thrust of Canann" -- yikes.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the 1st album is better and Blessed Black Wings/Death Is This Communion is better too, but Surrounded By Thieves is a lot of peoples fave. They're all GREAT though.

The 1st 2 are more doom-y/stoner i guess.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Last weekend I listened to Manilla Road - Open The Gates and Goatsnake - Flower Of Disease for the first time. Both are more fun than bouncy tiggers, and will seek out more. I'm reminded that I need to hear more YOB, but at that moment it's feeling like more an obligation than compulsion. I slogged through the first three Manic Street Preachers albums, and while one in four tunes are decent, it still felt mostly like a chore and left me unmoved. I'll shelve for another try later. I'll also wait 'til I'm in the mood for YOB.

Monster Magnet were a little hokey, but also pretty awesome for their first few albums. I listened to them a ton back in the day, and were definitely a gateway to Hawkind. Seemingly unrelated, but I also listened to a lot of Mule in the 90s, and feel like they've been unfairly forgotten. Their live shows were such a satisfying balance of a thick groove and a bludgeoning, like a southern rockin (via Michigan) version of Jesus Lizard.

― Fastnbulbous,

great post btw.

Surprised this placed above Earth 2 but hey, I listen to it more, so...

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Earth has been pretty well represented here.

gman59, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:56 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a LOT of peoples favourite Earth album. (inc mine, but i didn't vote for it)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Earth has been pretty well represented here.

They have, but if I had gone with just the top 100 that some wanted originally, none of these albums would have gotten the spotlight they deserve. Inc the ones johnny loves!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:00 (thirteen years ago) link

So glad I did a longer run out? (i am, and with many albums getting 5-10 votes I felt that deserved a roll out)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Should've been a top 500, clearly.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Led Zeppelin - I like it and I voted for it, but it feels reactive to me where all their other stuff they seized by the throat and made it their own. Most of it - GTBT, black mountain side, the blues things, even communication breakdown - could've been done by a number other bands (drums apart probably) which you can't say about their other records, even where the genre mix is similar.

There are some great TV performances of these tunes kicking around - 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' from Danish TV and a colour 'Dazed & Confused', from I'm not sure where, are sensational.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link

xp. No doubt. Counting both heavy rock and metal, I like at least a thousand albums.

Regarding the Slough Feg Traveller cover, it refers to a obscure sci-fi role playing game created by Game Designers Workshop in 1977. I never played it (I swear!) but it seems like it was similar to D&D. Geektastic. My friend Glenn who thinks Slough Feg is the best metal band of all time, inspired me to go to the Alehorn of Power Fest two years ago, which is the first time I saw them. I was converted. Dual lead guitarists (one of whom looks like a miniature J. Mascis), with the energy of what I imagine early Iron Maiden shows had, what's not to love? This album just missed making my ballot.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

The band's name, Slough Feg, or more formally, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, is taken from the main villain in a British comic book series title Slaine which setting was in places named in Celtic Myth. Those myths, as recounted in the historical tome known as the Ta'in Bo Cuailgne (thawn bo quel'gny), provide the fodder for many of Mike's lyrical topics, although subjects such as mental evolution, moral mastery, and your basic misery and madness also tend to crop up, even when not related to mythology.

Former member John Cobbett is also in Ludicra and Hammers OF Misfortune.
I think Traveller was his last album.

I knew there was plenty of Drudkh fans on the rolling metal thread, but didn't expect them to have such a high entry.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

wow a bunch of albums I voted for...

Led Zeppelin I - prolley my favorite Zep album--moments on Dazed and Confused and How Many More Times that remind me of Amon Duul II; Your Time is Gonna Come is titanic call-and-response R&B; Good Times Bad Times & Communication Breakdown much more taut and complex than anything non-modern metal had come up with to that point (alright Jimi wz more complex, but a hell of a lot more loose)...wish White Summer had been on there instead of Black Mountain Side, but still very great, and waaay more listenable than its sequel...

High On Fire - not sure if I voted for Surrounded by Thieves, but I love that album too. Speedwolf, The Yeti, Thraft of Canaan--to me, the coolest part about Devilution is how it opens with the crazed drum-solo that Razorhoof fades out on...Blessed Black Wings is better (a fantastic record) and I just got a hold of The Art of Self Defense like a couple of weeks ago, and THAT may be one of the best metal albums I have ever heard.

Kyuss! ...and the Circus Leaves Town is my favorite record of theirs. Photropic! One Inch Man! El Rodeo! Hurricane! Gloria Lewis! the YawningMan cover! Tangy Zizzle! Hurricane! Awesomeness from start to finish!

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I think that's the only Kyuss record I don't own anymore, for some reason. Need to repurchase. I got turned onto this one hearing it played at a record store circa 2002-03. (Remember when that used to happen?)

Not my fave Kyuss, there's 2 superior, but it is very underrated.

Phototropic is my favorite song of theirs...

v.v. surprised to see it ranked so highly above Rated R though
