I at least "get" most internet memes unless they're too niche-referential, but I'm probably the only person here that can be brought to tears laughing at stuff like this (warning: loud)

Yeah, that was funny. It's so obviously just two guys fucking around making up jokes as they go but that's part of the fun. :D

Janet Privacy Control (corey), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link

the one time I looked at The Stile Report, it had pictures of a dude on PCP who scraped off his face with broken glass and fed it to his dog

That's not what happened. Now they think that he just passed out and his dogs (not just one dog) chewed on his face in an effort to wake him up, just like what happened with that face transplant case in France.

i've always kind of hated the "boom goes the dynamite" video

ok maybe "hated" is too strong but it's so uncomfortable that i really couldn't fathom wanting to watch it again and again or sending it to friends

Donna and the pitfall of being pulchritudinous (donna rouge), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:42 (thirteen years ago) link

The Stile Project turned into a porn site sometime around 2001. I've often suspected that it was always intended to become a porn site after a short time of showing shock material to attract attention.

xp yeah laughing at that kid always seemed kind of churlish and mean

i think with fred we can safely bypass the "WHAT IS THIS!?!?" straight to the "no, i've figured it out and i'm better than this shit"

ô_o (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

seriously, can someone explain why the double rainbow thing is "funny" or "interesting"

Like no gut busting joke said, I think it's funny because the guy attaches some incredible portentousness to seeing a natural phenomenon. To the point of crying uncontrollably and asking "what does it mean?" which, when one is talking about a rainbow, is pretty funny. It means the sun is shining into rain at a particular angle. It's neat looking, but for fuck's sake.

Tsuga, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link

in original WoW video, l33t should be 1337. that's basic.

"goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

This is weird to me, because I'm usually easily annoyed, but I think I get Fred, and I find him entertaining. He's camp for kids! Not the kind of camp that sneaks in to so many cartoons and children's shows that's really meant for parents or stoners or whatever other adults are going to end up watching the show, but really targeted at kids themselves. It seems to me that kids are supposed to watch this and be amused by the recognition of the (often incredibly annoying) things that they and other kids do and say. It's not entertaining because screaming and freaking out are innately funny, it's entertaining because the recognition that childish histrionics are horrible is funny.

Janet Privacy Control (corey), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, but when people tell me how funny it is, I feel as though I'm missing something. I like dark humour etc but only when it's funny.

My kids memorised all the Annoying Orange sketches and recite them to each other. I think it's shit, but then my dad hates Vic Reeves and his dad hated Monty Python.

Not surprising that out of everyone I know forwarding and LOLing at this, all but one has been white and moderately well-off (and grown up in the middle-class suburbs or city).

they ruin the whole conceit by jumping in there themselves.

cozen, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I think most of the humor re: the Dodson thing is related to all those "stupid criminal" stories that you always hear about, only this one's got the tables turned even more with the victim and her family publicly threatening the attacker. It's nice to see someone get to mouth of about something you're in righteous agreement with on such a boring formal format as the local news. Plus, the autotune-the-news guys turned it into an impossibly catchy song. I'm not sure how much of it's really race-based. I'm white, btw.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

the people I know who are forwarding it on aren't people who are championing what Dodson did, they're making fun of his accent, and the things he says.

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I watched it & I thought that dude was pretty awesome. He's got some righteous rage because his sister almost got raped. I thought it made sense that he'd stick up for her like that, even if the way he's letting off steam is a little OTT. Just because some dumbasses are posting it (I know a few) doesn't make him a dumbass.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh he ain't a dumbass at all -- I fully support what Antoine said and did, I just don't like how people I know are like "LOL DUDE IS SAYIN GUY IS RAPING EVERYBODY". hell I didn't even realize it was about an attempted rape until I openedi t up as none of the people I know sharing it mentioend that aspect

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

That's pretty shitty. I'll still vouch for it as being funny to some for reasons other than racism. XXP-Abbott OTM. My FB friend who posted it first is the local organizer for V-Day and super-sensitive to this kind of shit and now she keeps inviting everybody to join his FB fan club, etc.

Eh, one could just as easily say the same thing about the double rainbow guy being a stereotypically white fat ass hippie.

I don't think people who find it funny are 'racist' as I hate to slap that label on anybody. the acquaintances I know are definitely misguided though.
