Listening to a bit of Esoteric. The shouty bits aren't bad, but I find the ambient passages dull I'm afraid. It all comes across as quite aimless to my ears; could probably get into it but with some effort. Cobalt are still the find of the day for me.

Circle is as good a 20-minute slice of Esoteric as you'll hear IMO - it's on Spotify and I massively recommend it

like I would recommend few songs - I mean it's not aimless in ANY way for a start - its directness is one of its more appealing elements

Nothing's Shocking is better, or at least metaller, than Ritual de lo Habitual then? Jane's are one of those rare bands, like Television or Joy Division, where the first thing I heard was so good that I always felt that listening to something else would just ruin the magic.

Dan Perry says that NS is more coherent as an album and more consistently good, but that the second half of RDLH is leagues ahead of NS, which seems fair

A Brit friend gave me a copy of This Is My Truth... back in '98. I thought it was absolutely terrible. I'm gonna listen to the first three and give 'em a chance, but I dunno...

And whether I like 'em or not, I think those who voted for them still have something to answer for. Sure, their second album was supposedly influenced by Guns 'N' Roses. But how does that qualify them for this poll more than, say The Jesus Lizard, The Birthday Party or Fugazi? Hell, I even Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad and Black Oak Arkansas would be more appropriate.

You throw "heavy rock" in the poll title, you waive the right to grouse about voting indiscipline. The first couple MSP albums are great rock records, and they aren't Soft Rock, therefore nobody should act outraged that they're on here. I'd have voted a straight metal slate if I'd voted, but Gold Against the Soul is probably my actual favorite album of all those nominated here.

all i'm saying about sunn O))) is that 1) i'm not really into them and 2) pure drone is a subgenre of noise, which is not of metal/hardrock. a band like nadja, tho, which is drone-doom, would fit on this list.

You throw "heavy rock" in the poll title, you waive the right to grouse about voting indiscipline. The first couple MSP albums are great rock records, and they aren't Soft Rock, therefore nobody should act outraged that they're on here. I'd have voted a straight metal slate if I'd voted, but Gold Against the Soul is probably my actual favorite album of all those nominated here.

I did not throw anything into the poll title, so I guess I still got the right to grouse. We did have the opportunity to veto in the nominations thread. There was a half-hearted veto, I think, but Herman seemed to want them in so no one bothered to push it. I didn't hear them in full until today, so I obviously had no right to veto at the time. I listened to Gold Against The Soul twice so far and it's not remotely heavy, at least in the context of this poll. Maybe compared to Blur they are, but barely more than, say, Oasis. So I'm more curious than ever as to what makes them so special. Nothing wrong with some discussion.

Why would one vote a straight metal slate? Strategic? Is there a single person who actually does not like any of the heavy rock albums in this poll?

A Brit friend gave me a copy of This Is My Truth... back in '98. I thought it was absolutely terrible.

that is a crap album, but the 1st 3 records are totally different, it's richey era. Generation Terrorists is totally a g n r/alice cooper influenced effort (they even covered both on bsides)

Sorry, conked out. I'm delighted to have Gold Against The Soul up there at least. I love the production on it, it sounds so expensive, and the songs are their most tuneful.

I don't get the ire, frankly. Of course they're heavy rock. If the vocals were an octave deeper (or higher!) or it had better bass there wouldn't even be an argument. Anyway, a tenth of the electorate thought they qualified enough to be worth a vote, that kind of disproves any objections categorically. Plus they're only #155, they're hardly stinking everything thing up for the purist.

Re: Black Metal vs Death Metal, I like both really, although Death Metal just shades it. DM tends to be a bit more, immediately, viscerally enjoyable; a lot of BM takes a bit of effort before it clicks. Blackened Death Metal is where it's at though!!

I have never even fucked with blackened death. I'll have to try that out.
