Holy Bible's the only Manics I have much time for.

just I feel like some really good records have come pretty low (Dissection, Lysol, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Swans), so it makes me wonder what is to come. Hopefully more black metal. And Melvins. And Godflesh.

At the end of this though, I feel like I am going to have a lot of great new stuff to check, particularly at this end of the poll.

death & thrash have outperformed BM so far, but kvltists dont vote on ilm.

sunn O))) i don't think are metal, and although their music "sounds" heavy, the lack of riffage makes me think it shouldn't even be on this list. it isn't metal or hard rock it's just noise.

I think it's fair to say the list is nothing like what people expected (which means some have lots to complain about) but it's a good list.

They are definitely not Noise (with a big N) though, whatever else they may or may not be.

'just noise' is the lazy criticism blockheaded laymen aim at metal, so to use it about ANYTHING other than Noise is kinda unforgivable for a metal fan

The Holy Bible is a magnificent album, but I didn't feel quite right voting for it - it's heavy as all hell, but not at all a 'metal' thing. Gold Against The Soul I've become very fond of in that regard, but I don't expect it'll place.

Anyway, The Holy Bible is dense and uncomfortable and claustrophobic, befitting the £50-a-day studio they banged it out in, and at least half the tracks are really powerful musically. The lyrics are demented and horrible, as opposed to the demented and fun things they used to come up with, but for all that there's a poised beauty about the whole thing.

and looking up the track listing I only remember 4 songs from it, although I probably haven't heard it for 20+ years so that's not too bad.

btw do most death metallers still hate black metal or has that all changed now?

I'm intrigued by BM, but mostly it lacks enough groove for my tastes and I'm not really into lo-fi production. The stuff I like the most would probably be regarded as sell-out by purists.

A question for you metaller's. Judging by the tracks & album results so far, there appears to be lots and lots of sub-genres sub-sub-genres and micro-genres. Metal appears to be even more splintered than say, indie or even electronica/dance music. is that the case? I'm told that this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres is not even definitive. Why is metal more open to a cross pollination of other genres? It looks as though it's always evolving. Anything I hear now sounds completely different to what I heard in the 90s, or the 80s and 70s metal I've heard (while a lot of indie music is stuck in the 60s, at least here in England), even commercially, yet older genres are still going strong too. Is the famous elitism part of this as when a band or genre gets popular, they all get into another one to remain cool? or is it just a progressive genre where boundaries are always broken?( a bit like pop music absorbing everything and anything).

Also what is the best "metal" for a non-metaller to start with? Apart from Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath, Kiss, Guns 'N Roses,Metallica,Iron Maiden. I don't like Sunn o))). I do quite like Opeth and Porcupine Tree and I heard an Enslaved albums I liked the sound of on none listen a good while ago at a friends house.

obviously start with Neurosis

but there's far more purists and purists bands who "keep it real"

and you would never listen to them in a million years! So how do you know its bending boundaries if you dont know the starting point?

2010's best two metal albums IMO are Cathedral, which is HUGE and doomy and FUN and everyone likes it, and Shining's Blackjazz, which is a preposterous avant-industrial nightmare of the greatest imaginable kind and is consequently liked by about 3 people on ILM

I like some 90s stuff that could be described as that; Anathema, early Paradise Lost. I haven't heard any more modern stuff that's grabbed me, but certainly open to trying!
